QUICK RESPONSE
Dahshur is 40 km south of Cairo. The Red Pyramid? Free access (200 EGP = £3 for the site). Not 4 hours of waiting like in Khufu. You get into it. Alone. Almost. That's what changes everything.
The problem with Giza? You arrive at 8am. There are already 300 tourists. In Dahshur, there are 15 of you. Fifteen.
We, a local agency based in Cairo since 2020, created our courses in Dahshur long before it became trendy. And honestly? It has become our worst kept secret. This royal necropolis in Dahshur offers what Giza can no longer offer: intimacy with a pyramid. You place your hand on the blocks. You breathe the stagnant air of the burial chambers. It's visceral.
Why Dahshur Crushes Giza (and Saqqara)

Giza is: 15,000 tourists per day. Sunset selfies. 45-minute queues to enter Cheops. In Dahshur, what do you do? You walk between the red and rhomboidal pyramids without meeting anyone (arrive at 7:45 a.m., seriously). The photos? Incredibles. No hats of 50 tourists in front of your lens.
Saqqara is the gradient. Djoser complex, yes, it's monumental. But access to the interior of the secondary pyramids? Limit. In Dahshur, you enter the Red Pyramid (the real one, massive, 104 meters). You descend 64 meters underground to reach the burial chamber of Sneferu. No windows. No electronic barriers. Suddenly, you really have the feeling of being an archaeologist, not a tourist.
The number that kills: The Red Pyramid is the 3rd largest pyramid in Egypt. It was built shortly before Khufu's Great Pyramid, by his father Sneferu, around 2600 BC. But most tourists don't know it. It's not marketing, it's collective ignorance.
The Red Pyramid: What You'll Really See

Built under Sneferu (4th dynasty, c. 2600 BC). 104 meters high. One of the most well preserved in Egypt. For what ? Because it was spared by stone thieves during the Middle Ages (the other pyramids were used to build the mosques of Cairo - not bad, eh?).
The entrance and the master bedroom
The entrance is on the south side. Not like Cheops which is north. You go down a narrow hallway, really narrow (look down), then two antechambers. And then the burial chamber. It's empty, of course. But in polished black stone, monumental. 16 meters x 9 meters. 4000 years ago, it was a red granite sarcophagus inside. Disappeared. Stolen or taken away.
Access to the interior and practical details
You enter in a maximum group of 10. No mandatory guide inside. A guard opens you, you have 15 minutes. That's all. It seems short. It's not short. It's intense. Flashlight required (bring your own, the guard's is weak). No professional photos (drone, tri-pod). Phones, yes.
The Rhomboidal Pyramid: The Forgotten One

2 km from the Red Pyramid, there is the Rhomboidal Pyramid (or Bent Pyramid in English). Built under Snefrou. Weird degree of tilt: 54° at the base, then it flattens out to 42°. Did the Egyptians change their minds mid-construction? Maybe. Or it was a structural choice (the engineers were afraid of collapse).
Well, it's less impressive than the Red Pyramid. But it's completely devoid of tourists. The two pyramids form a coherent whole. As an agency, we recommend that you do them together (2h30 total), not separately.

How to Get There From Cairo

Distance. 40km. Route. 1 hour 15 minutes by car from central Cairo. The good news? It's not towards the dusty desert, it's a correct road (Cairo Autostrade - Highway 53 towards Aswan).
Option 1: Private car with driver
Expect 350-450 EGP (£10) round trip for 4 hours. Driver waits outside. You set the return time in advance. This is what we recommend. Cheaper than you think, less tiring than the taxi. Our supplier network in Egypt offers 4-seater air-conditioned cars (Toyota Auris) from 85 EGP/h.
Option 2: White Taxi from Giza
Trading from your hotel. Between 300-400 EGP fixed round trip. With a 2.5 hour wait. It's random. Some drivers are decent, others want to sell you extra rides. Avoid if you are a couple and not negotiators.
Option 3: Group guided tour
Uber does not serve Dahshur (too far off-grid). You can try agencies on our complete guide to Cairo which offer mixed tours Dahshur + Saqqara + Memphis from £50 per person (breakfast included, French guide).
Entrance Prices and Rates 2026

General entry to the pyramid site of Dahshur: 200 EGP (~£3). Access to the 2 pyramids included. Free for children under 6 years old. Students (with international card): 100 EGP. Professional photographers: additional EGP 300.
English-speaking guide on site: ask at reception. Between 150-200 EGP for 2 hours (3-4 people). It's okay, the local guides there are trained. Less established than in Giza but more authentic.
Pricing tip: If you are coming with a group of 8+, contact the site administration first (al-dahshur@egymonuments.gov.eg). You can negotiate a group discount of up to 15%. Yes, it's surprising that in Egypt we negotiate archaeological prices. Welcome to Egypt.
Best Time to Visit Dahshur
The question that kills: when to go? Two considerations.
Climate. Dahshur is in the middle of the desert. From May to September, 45-50°C. September is impossible. In winter (October to March), 18-28°C. Ideal. In short, November to February is your window.
Attendance. December-January: tourist peak. February-March: less dense but still full. If you come in March-April (before Ramadan), you have more solitude. During Ramadan? Museums close earlier (2 p.m.), fewer tourists. That said, it's complicated for meals (restaurants closed during the day).
Opening hours
8 a.m.-5 p.m. in winter. 7 a.m.-6 p.m. in summer (but you won't go there in summer). Last admission: 4 p.m. winter, 5 p.m. summer. Plan your arrival for 7:45-8:15 a.m. This is before the majority of groups.
Combine Dahshur with Other Sites
Dahshur solo is 3-4 hours. But that's not enough for one day. Our excursion catalog often combines Dahshur with other sites. Short jumpsuits:
Dahshur + Saqqara (queen combination)
Saqqara is 18 km away. 25 minutes by car. You do Dahshur in the morning (8 a.m.-11:30 a.m.), Saqqara in the afternoon (1 p.m.-4:30 p.m.). Total: 7 hours. You see the two major pyramid complexes in South Cairo. It's your archaeological day. For more details, see our complete guide to Saqqara.
Dahshur + Giza + Saqqara (3 sites in one day)
Ambitious but doable. 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Giza in the morning, Saqqara noon-1:30 p.m., Dahshur 2:30 p.m.-5 p.m. You're missing the details. You gain an overview. Recommended if you only have 1 day and you are in a quick tour of Cairo.
Dahshur + Memphis
Memphis is the ancient capital (old palace, colossal statue of Ramses II). 32 km from Dahshur. 40 minutes. Less classic combination but valid if you like archeology beyond the pyramids. Dahshur 8 a.m.-11:30 a.m., Memphis 1 p.m.-3 p.m. Return to Cairo 4:30 p.m.
Are you hesitating between Giza and Dahshur? Dahshur is the right decision for travelers who avoid overly marked trails. We organize private tours with driver + English-speaking guide + picnic in the valley for £140 per person (min 2 people).

Field Advice
What to bring
Flashlight. No, seriously. The interior corridors of the pyramids are pitch black. The lighting on the site is minimalist. Bring a flashlight LED (£10 in Egypt, cheaper than in France). Water. 2-3 liters. At 40°C in the sun, you dehydrate in 20 minutes. Hat. SPF50 sunscreen. In passing, the reverberation of the white limestone intensifies the UV rays. People are burning badly.
Photography
Golden Hours: 7:30-8:30 a.m. and 4-5 p.m. Warm light, dramatic shadows. Noon ? It is flat, white, without relief. For interior photos of burial chambers, ISO 3200-6400, aperture at f/4. No flash (damages frescoes, prohibited anyway).
Accessibility
No ramps. No elevators (obviously). The interior corridors are narrow and some passages have irregular steps. If you have mobility problems, you can explore outside (valid). But not the inside of the pyramids. Find out beforehand if you cannot climb.
Recurring Questions
Can we really go inside the Red Pyramid?
Yes. You descend 64 meters. This is allowed and encouraged. In Khufu you also enter, but there are 1000 people there that day. In Dahshur, you are alone. Existential difference.
How long does it take to see Dahshur complete?
3h30 minimum. You do: reception (10 min), Red Pyramid inside + outside (1h15), Rhomboidal Pyramid (1h), small museum (30 min), photos (20 min). With additional guide, 4h30.
Do you have to speak Arabic to be understood?
No. The reception speaks basic English. The signage has English + Arabic. The guides generally speak French, German, English. It's touristy, not a lost town.
Hazard ? Insecurity ? COVID? Really safe?
2026. Dahshur is an official site supervised by the Ministry of Antiquities. Local tourist police. Safer than some Paris metros. COVID? No issues since 2023. But respect general hygiene (filtered water, no fruit without peeling).
Ready for your archaeological day? We create personalized packages for groups, couples or families (transport + English-speaking archaeo guide + local lunch included). Dahshur + Saqqara from £90 per person.
