Book your tickets for the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in 2026 is no longer an option but an obligation. Since December 2025, the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities has closed on-site ticketing and requires online reservations via the official website visit-gem.com. This measure aims to regulate crowds after the opening of the largest archaeological museum in the world (November 2025) and to avoid the 4-hour queues observed in the first months. Our SEV team explains everything - the official website to use, the updated 2026 prices, the step-by-step steps to book, the pitfalls to avoid with resellers, and how to intelligently combine GEM + Pyramids of Giza in a single day.

Why GEM tickets must now be bought online
The new cairo museum official website visit-gem.com has become the obligatory way to visit the Grand Egyptian Museum since December 1, 2025. Several reasons motivate this strict policy:
- Strict daily quotas: 8,000 visitors maximum per day, compared to 14,000 when it opened in November 2025. Without prior reservation, entry is refused even if the gauge is not reached.
- Mandatory time slots: You choose a 2-hour slot upon purchase (9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m., 7 p.m.). This helps avoid crowd peaks in the Tutankhamun galleries.
- Cutting out the touts: Until this rule came in, outside websites were flogging tickets at up to 3x the official price without any promise you would get in. Now the only valid tickets, each carrying an authenticated QR code, come from visit-gem.com.
- Confirmation by email: You receive a PDF with QR code to present at the entrance, plus a French confirmation on request when booking by our SEV team.
Beware of the trap of the fake official site: Several nearby domains (visitgem.eg, visitgrandegyptianmuseum.com, gemcairo.org) attempt to capture traffic but are not recognized by the gatekeepers. Always check the exact URL visit-gem.com before entering your bank details. If you have any doubts, the SEV team will take care of the booking for you - no extra costs if you travel with our packages.

Opening hours and best time to visit

This time range makes it possible to spread out the crowds and offers less busy slots at the start or end of the day.

| 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. | Low | Golden light Grand Staircase, morning freshness, empty rooms |
| 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. | Average | Cruise groups disembarking, already loaded |
| 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. | Strong | Peak crowds, queues in Tutankhamun |
| 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. | Average | Galleries nicely lit, the tour coaches have left |
| 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. | Low | Sunset over the Pyramids from the esplanade |

The Grand Egyptian Museum is located 2 km east of the Pyramids of Giza, on the Cairo-Alexandria desert road. Distance from central Cairo (Tahrir Square) - approximately 18 km, or 35 to 75 minutes depending on traffic.
