The only English-speaking guide that covers all four major types of cruises in Egypt: 5-star boats on the Nile, private sailing dahabiyas, navigation on Lake Nasser to Abu Simbel, and diving cruises in the Red Sea. Booked directly by our team in Cairo.
A cruise in Egypt is not just a mode of transport - it is the very experience of the journey. From the temple of Karnak in Luxor to the temples carved into the cliff at Abu Simbel, by way of the Nubian stops at Kom Ombo and Edfu, sailing on the Nile or Lake Nasser lets you string together the major sites without transfers or intermediate hotels. The cabin becomes a mobile hotel, the upper deck becomes a lounge, and each morning opens onto a new thousand-year-old landscape.
Egypt actually offers four distinct cruise formats, each with its own pricing logic, duration, ideal audience and accessible temples. Most travelers know only the classic 5-star boats between Luxor and Aswan - whereas a private dahabiya cruise, a stay on Lake Nasser or a diving cruise in the Red Sea offer radically different experiences for varied budgets.
This complete guide, written by our English-speaking team based in Cairo, explains each format, offers you an honest comparison, and points you toward the right choice based on your traveler profile, your budget and the season.
Here is a concise comparison before exploring each format in detail. The majority of competing sites cover only Nile cruises - whereas in practice you have a choice between four completely different worlds.
| Format | Duration | Cabins | Price pp | Temples | Ideal for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic 5-star Nile | 3 to 7 nights | 60-130 | $860-1,950 | Karnak, Valley of the Kings, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Philae | Families, first trip, sociable travelers |
| Private dahabiya | 5 to 8 nights | 4-12 | $3,000-4,900 | Same sites + off-the-beaten-path stops (El Kab, Gebel Silsila) | Couples, honeymoon, small groups |
| Lake Nasser | 3-4 nights | 40-65 | $1,200-1,950 | Abu Simbel, Kalabsha, Wadi El Seboua, Amada | Archaeology enthusiasts, photographers |
| Red Sea (yacht/diving) | 5 to 10 nights | 10-30 | $1,000-2,400 | None (beach/diving stay) | Certified divers, warm water year-round |
None of the big US OTAs and tour operators combine these four options - most outsource to local agencies and offer only standardized 5-star boats. Booking directly with SEV in Cairo gives you access to the country's entire range, with no middleman markup and with fully English-speaking support.
The most popular and most accessible format. The 5-star boats that sail between Luxor and Aswan (or the reverse) offer an ideal compromise between high-end comfort and an intensive cultural program. The classic downstream route lasts 4 nights (Luxor to Aswan) and the upstream route 3 nights (Aswan to Luxor) - the difference coming from the stops and the direction of the current.
Among the 280+ boats that sail on the Nile, only about thirty earn the 5-star Premium label for their condition, their cuisine and the quality of their crews. Our team selects as a priority: Sonesta Star Goddess, Movenpick MS Royal Lily, Oberoi Philae, Steigenberger Legacy, and Nile Adventurer.
For an in-depth analysis of the boats, see our ultimate guide to the 2026 Nile cruise or our comparison of the best Nile cruise boat 2026.

The dahabiya is the traditional Egyptian boat with lateen sails that enthusiasts have been rediscovering for twenty years. The concept: 4 to 12 cabins maximum, two triangular sails, sailing with the wind, stops in villages where the large boats do not call. It is the exact opposite of the 5-star boat: fewer people, more silence, and an almost private service.
You can either book a cabin on a shared dahabiya (between 8 and 12 cabins), or privatize the entire boat for a group of friends or a honeymoon. The private rate rises to $7,300-13,000 for 5-8 nights, but the experience becomes incomparable.

Lake Nasser is one of the best-kept secrets of Egyptian tourism. Created by the flooding behind the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s, this artificial lake, 340 miles long, covers ancient Nubia and shelters the temples saved by UNESCO. Cruises here are rare: only 4 boats operate in 2026 - Eugenie, Kasr Ibrim, Prince Abbas and Nubian Sea - which guarantees very limited crowds.
The cruise lasts 3 nights (Aswan to Abu Simbel) or 4 nights (full loop). Departures are from the port of Aswan, a stone's throw from the High Dam. It is the ideal option for archaeology enthusiasts who want to see Abu Simbel without the crowds of the day trips from Aswan or Luxor.

When people talk about a "cruise in Egypt," the Red Sea is almost never mentioned - yet it offers a solid lineup for travelers who combine pharaonic culture with a beach/diving stay. Two formats exist:
Boats of 10-30 cabins specialized in scuba diving. Itineraries: Brothers Islands (wrecks and hammerhead sharks), Daedalus Reef, Elphinstone Reef, Saint John's Reef south of Marsa Alam. Audience: Open Water certified divers minimum, ideally Advanced. Rate: $1,000-2,400 for 7 nights all inclusive (unlimited dives).
Family boats that follow the coast with diving and swimming stops. Lower rate ($700-1,200/week), mixed audience (non-divers welcome).
See our destination guides: Hurghada, best Red Sea diving sites, Marsa Alam beaches and diving.
Almost all travelers are not content with a standalone cruise - they combine the cruise with Cairo (Pyramids + Grand Egyptian Museum) and sometimes a Red Sea or Abu Simbel extension. Here are the most requested combinations in 2026:
The most popular format. Flight Day 1 to Cairo, 2 nights in Cairo with the Pyramids and Grand Museum, domestic flight to Luxor, embarkation, sailing down the Nile to Aswan, return flight. Average 2026 price: $1,390-2,300 pp all inclusive.
Adding a night in Aswan to leave at dawn by coach (3h30) for Abu Simbel + return in the evening. Price: $1,800-2,800 pp.
The grand tour: 3 nights Cairo + 7 nights Nile cruise + 4 nights at a 5-star all-inclusive hotel in Hurghada. Price: $2,500-4,100 pp.
