Eid al-Adha 2026 in Egypt - the exact date

Mohammed Ali Mosque at Cairo Citadel, place of Eid al-Adha prayers

Eid al-Adha 2026 falls on Wednesday May 27, 2026 in Egypt, subject to the official sighting of the moon by the Egyptian Dar al-Ifta on May 16. This date corresponds to 10 Dhu al-Hijjah 1447 in the Hijri calendar.

The Tuesday May 26, 2026 is Yawm Arafah (Arafat Day), not Eid itself. It is the day when Hajj pilgrims gather at Mount Arafat in Saudi Arabia, and non-pilgrim Muslims traditionally fast. The foreign traveler is not required to fast, but it is useful to know to understand the atmosphere in the restaurants that day (slow service, busier evening meals).

The Egyptian government has confirmed a 5-day public holiday from Tuesday May 26 to Saturday May 30, 2026 for the private and public sector. Administrations, schools and many agency offices are closed. Major tourist sites (pyramids, museums, temples) remain open normally.

Why Egypt is naturally halal-friendly for Eid

Al-Muizz Street in Islamic Cairo, UNESCO heritage and spiritual heart

This question often comes up when preparing for Eid away from family. Short answer - in Egypt you don't have any halal logistics to deal with. This is the default, not the exception. Here's what that means in practice.

  • Catering - 100% of traditional restaurants, hotels, cafes and street stalls serve halal. Alcohol is only served in some 5★ hotels and international bars. No applications, no research, no negotiations.
  • Mosques everywhere - Cairo has more than 4,000 mosques. Airports, shopping malls, 5★ hotels and even some restaurants have prayer rooms. The call to prayer (adhan) is audible 5 times a day throughout the country.
  • Respectful atmosphere during Eid - you don't have to apologize for praying, looking for an imam, asking for a room without an alcoholic fridge. Egypt incorporates all of this.
  • Dress code - Unveiled women travelers are perfectly welcome at all tourist sites. To visit the historic mosques (Al-Azhar, Sultan Hassan, Ibn Tulun), a scarf is required at the entrance (often provided free of charge).

SEV treats around thirty English-speaking Muslim travelers each year (Maghrebis of origin, West Africans, French converts) who return to Egypt specifically for the natural halal comfort and authenticity of Sunni mosques.

The atmosphere of the 4 days of Eid in Cairo and Luxor

Khan el-Khalili in Cairo at night during Eid al-Adha festivities

Each day of Eid has its own atmosphere. This is what you will actually experience.

Tuesday May 26 - Yawm Arafah - eve of Eid, cozy atmosphere. Many Egyptians fast until sunset. The markets are active (preparation for Eid, clothing purchases, meat ordered from the butcher). Lively evening around 7-8 p.m. with breaking of the family fast. Good day for a quiet tour of the pyramids and dinner on the Nile.

Wednesday May 27 - Eid Day 1 - the most significant day. The Eid prayer takes place at 6:30-7:30 a.m. in mosques and on esplanades (public squares transformed into places of collective prayer). A striking spectacle if you are in Islamic Cairo or near the Mohammed Ali mosque at the Citadel. After prayer, traditional sacrifice of sheep (or ox) in residential areas - hotel travelers are not exposed to this. The rest of the day is a big family celebration - uncrowded tourist sites in the morning, lively atmosphere in the afternoon.

Thursday May 28 to Saturday May 30 - days 2 to 4 - festive extension. Khan el-Khalili is regaining its vitality, Nile cruises are sailing normally, hotels are serving special Eid buffets with roast mutton, kofta, rice with nuts, and traditional desserts (kahk, ma'amoul). Relaxed atmosphere, lots of Egyptian families outing, perfect opportunity to observe local culture.

The climate at the end of May at the beginning of June in Egypt

Hurghada Red Sea in late May, seaside alternative with sea at 25 degrees

Honesty first - end of May is hot but not extreme. Here are the average temperatures for the period May 26 - June 1, 2026.

Destination Min night Max day Practical verdict
Cairo 21°C 34°C Comfortable morning and evening, warm from midday to 3 p.m. Pyramid visits 8-11 a.m.
Luxor 22°C 39°C Visits Karnak/Valley of the Kings 6-10am. Nap 12-4 p.m.
Aswan, Abu Simbel 23°C 41°C Warmer, but dry. Refreshing Nile water.
Hurghada, Red Sea 22°C 33°C Ideal seaside resort. Sea 25°C, thermal wind in the afternoon.

The dry heat is more bearable than the humid 32°C of Bali. All 5★ hotels have air conditioning, swimming pools and shaded passageways. The Red Sea (Hurghada, El Gouna, Marsa Alam) remains the best option for combining Eid and the seaside - we drop 6 to 8°C compared to Cairo and the sea compensates.

Eid al-Adha itinerary 5 days - our recommendation

Nile cruise in May June 2026, option to combine Eid and tourism

This is the route we ride most often for English-speaking Muslim travelers during Eid. Optimized format heat + Eid atmosphere.

  • Day 1 - Monday May 25 (arrival Cairo) - arrival in Cairo on your flight to Egypt. VIP welcome at the airport and private transfer to the 5★ Khan el-Khalili hotel. Rest. Evening stroll in the Islamic bazaar, dinner at El Fishawy (century-old café).
  • Day 2 - Tuesday May 26 (Yawm Arafah) - visit to the pyramids of Giza 8 a.m.-11 a.m. (before the great heat). Andrea lunch, Sphinx view. Afternoon Grand Egyptian Museum (3h-4h, the new wonder of Cairo). Free evening, cozy atmosphere of Arafah.
  • Day 3 - Wednesday May 27 (Eid Day 1) - wake up at 5:30 a.m. Eid prayer at the Citadel (Mohammed Ali Mosque) or Al-Azhar at 6:30 a.m. Hearty breakfast at the hotel. Rest until 2 p.m. Afternoon Tahrir Museum or Coptic Cairo. Traditional Eid dinner evening on a Nile Maxim boat.
  • Day 4 - Thursday May 28 - internal flight Cairo - Luxor (1 a.m., 6:30 a.m.). Boarding cruise 5★ or day in Luxor (Karnak, Luxor, Valley of the Kings). More people at the temples but a lively atmosphere.
  • Day 5 - Saturday May 30 (departure) - morning domestic flight to Cairo, then private transfer to the airport for your return flight to Europe, accompanied by our team until check-in.

Variant Red Sea - replace days 4-5 with 2 nights Hurghada (flight Cairo - Hurghada 1 hour, seafront hotel 5★, snorkeling on Giftun Island). Perfect culture + sea combination for families.

Book 16 days before Eid - which is still possible

At D-16, here is what can still be guaranteed and what is becoming tense.

Still largely possible - direct Air France and EgyptAir flights, 5★ Cairo hotels (Sonesta Pyramids, Marriott Mena House, Four Seasons First Residence), standard 5★ Nile liner cruise, private transfers, private English-speaking guide. No saturation.

More tense but possible - cheapest low-cost flights (Transavia Monday May 25 departure morning), Four Seasons superior suites, private dahabiyas (very small units), Pyramides sound and light show in French (1 session per evening).

Complete or risky at D-16 - ultra low-cost flights Tuesday 26 (North African diaspora departures to Egypt), presidential suites, complete private dahabiya for groups of 8+ people.

Our SEV team blocks your rooms and flights as soon as the quote is accepted, payment in installments in 3 installments with no fees possible. Final confirmation within 48 hours after your visit.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions About Eid Al-Adha Travel to Egypt 2026

When exactly does Eid al-Adha 2026 fall in Egypt?

Eid al-Adha 2026 begins on Wednesday May 27, 2026 in Egypt (10 Dhu al-Hijjah 1447), subject to the official announcement by the Dar al-Ifta after lunar observation. Tuesday May 26 is Yawm Arafah (Arafat Day), not Eid. The Egyptian government has declared 5 public holidays from May 26 to 30.

Are the pyramids and museums open during Eid?

Yes, all major tourist sites remain open as normal - Giza Pyramids, Sphinx, Grand Egyptian Museum, Tahrir Museum, Luxor and Karnak temples, Valley of the Kings, Abu Simbel, Philae. Administrations and banks are closed from May 26 to 30, but tourist sites are in full operation.

Are there any clothing restrictions for tourists during Eid?

No specific restrictions related to Eid. The standard tourist dress code applies - covering clothing recommended for visiting historic mosques (shoulders and knees covered, headscarf for women), standard attire for archaeological sites and hotels. Unveiled women travelers are perfectly welcome at all tourist sites.

Can I attend Eid prayers as a Muslim tourist?

Yes, absolutely. The Eid prayer takes place around 6:30-7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 27 in all mosques and on many public plazas. Cairo's historic mosques (Al-Azhar, Sultan Hassan, Mohammed Ali at the Citadel, Ibn Tulun) are accessible to foreign worshipers. Dress decently and arrive 30 minutes early.

Do prices go up during Eid in Egypt?

Slightly, but not dramatically. 5★ hotels in Cairo are increasing their rates by 10 to 20% over the period May 25-31 due to demand from the Maghrebi diaspora and the domestic market. Nile cruises remain stable (summer season = normal high season). For your flight to Egypt, which you book yourself, aim for a departure on Monday 25 or Saturday 30 rather than Tuesday 26: prices there remain significantly lower.

Can we take a Nile cruise during Eid al-Adha 2026?

Yes, it's even an excellent option. 5★ boats normally depart from Luxor on Wednesday or Saturday for 4 or 7 nights. The atmosphere on board during Eid is festive - majority Egyptian Muslim crew, special Eid meals, enhanced cultural activities. Red Sea also possible (direct flight Cairo - Hurghada 1 hour).

Is the Grand Egyptian Museum open on Eid?

Yes, the GEM (Grand Egyptian Museum) is open every day including Eid holidays. Online reservation via visit-gem.com remains compulsory since December 1, 2025. Price 2026 - 1,450 EGP foreign adult (~£24), 730 EGP child 6-12 years old or ISIC student. Allow 5 to 6 hours of visit to do the essentials.

Is alcohol hard to find during Eid?

Alcohol is not affected by Eid more than usual. It is served in international 5★ hotels, tourist bars in Hurghada/Sharm, and licensed restaurants in Cairo (Andrea, Sequoia, Sofitel). Muslim tourism for Eid remains very accessible for non-drinkers naturally.

Is a special visa required to enter Egypt during Eid?

No, the standard Egyptian visa is sufficient. Visa on arrival (VOA) 30 USD at the airport counter, OR e-visa before departure 30 USD via visa2egypt.gov.eg (deadline 3-7 days, to be requested before May 23). The passport must be valid for 6 months after the return date. No quota or restriction during Eid period.

Why choose Egypt rather than Morocco or Tunisia for Eid?

Egypt combines spirituality (reference Sunni mosques like Al-Azhar, founded in 970, the oldest active Islamic university in the world) and unique pre-Islamic heritage (pyramids, Nile, temples). Morocco and Tunisia offer a similar cultural family experience, but Egypt adds the pharaonic dimension not found elsewhere. Ideal if you want Eid vacation + exceptional cultural tourism in one trip.
