Plain truth: whether an excursion cruise stopover Egypt works comes down to three things. How far the port is from the site, how long your ship stays alongside, and how you travel between the two (coach, minibus, occasionally a domestic flight).
The 2026 ports of call, Mediterranean side and Red Sea side:
Compare the ship's own shore excursion: £110-£170 per person, a guide working in English, 40-60 people to a coach, everyone leaving together, everyone arriving together, and temples packed with the five other coaches from your ship at exactly the same time. For the Alexandria stopover in particular, the ship's tour tends to cram the Qaitbay Citadel, the library and the catacombs into 8 hours, so rushed that none of the three gets a fair look.
What we do instead: an 8-seat minibus, an English-speaking guide, setting off as the sites open, lunch at a local restaurant we trust, and you back at the quay 45 minutes before the all-aboard call.

In brief: the ship is alongside in Alexandria for 8-14 hours, which leaves you two options. Explore Alexandria itself. Or head down the desert road to Cairo (220 km, 2.5-3 hours), see the pyramids and a museum, with the return leg taking 4-5 hours. Both are feasible; the first fits far more comfortably.
The full-city version of an Alexandria stopover covers:
For a deeper look at the city, read our full Alexandria guide. Lunch can be back on board, or we book you a table at the Greek Club or Balbaa, two old favourites we have relied on for years with our clients.
The second option from an Alexandria stopover is Cairo: 2h30 to 3h along the desert road depending on traffic, leaving from Alexandria. Then 2h30 at the sites (pyramids, panorama and Sphinx, OR the Grand Egyptian Museum; there is not time for both). Another 2h30-3h back. Around 10-11 hours in all, so only for calls of 12 hours or longer.
Our advice: first time in Egypt, go to Cairo. Been before? Stay in Alexandria; very few British travellers ever get to know it.

Worth knowing: of all Egypt's Red Sea ports, Safaga is nearest to Luxor, 230 km away, or 4.5 to 5 hours on the Sahl Hasheesh-Safaga-Luxor road. A security convoy leaves Safaga each morning (6.30am in 2026) and comes back at the end of the day.
How a 12 hour Safaga stopover to Luxor usually runs:
Your all-aboard will be 10pm or 10.30pm depending on the line; we check the MSC, Costa or Cunard timetable beforehand. In 2023, 2024 and 2025 not one of our clients was late back, because we build a 45 minute buffer into every return.
Be honest about tiredness: 10 hours of road and sightseeing, plus the scrum at each end. Two adults and a teenager cope fine. With two children under 8 we would say no, and propose instead a Safaga to Hurghada beach day with a Bedouin lunch (£50 per person), which suits them far better. See our Hurghada guide.
A private Safaga to Luxor excursion with an English-speaking guide costs £140-£200 per person for a party of 2-4, falling to £90-£130 from 6 upwards. MSC's equivalent shore excursion is £150-£180 in a group of 40. To read up: our Luxor guide in full and our page on the temple of Karnak.
A question about your cruise stopover?
WhatsApp us your ship's itinerary and within 1 hour you will have a price for every port. A Cairo-based English-speaking team, not a call centre.

At the northern mouth of the Suez Canal, Port Said sits 220 km from Cairo. When an MSC or Costa ship makes a Port Said stopover, usually 10-11 hours alongside, you get precisely one full-on Cairo day.
The format we arrange:
Tight, yes. With a ship sailing from Port Said at 8pm it works. If it sails at 6pm (Cunard sometimes does), either the Grand Museum or the panorama has to go, and we ask you to choose beforehand. Privately, with an English-speaking guide: £140-£180 per person, or £90-£130 with 6 or more. Read our practical guide to the Giza pyramids.
A gentler, less ambitious version: the pyramids, the old Cairo museum and a Nubian lunch, with a quicker run back because we skip north Giza and head straight for the port. £130-£170 per person. Sensible if you have seen pyramids before and want something different.

No Egyptian port is closer to Cairo than Ain Sokhna: 120 km, a 1h30-2h run up the Cairo-Sokhna motorway. A few MSC and Costa ships will spend 10-12 hours there in 2026; if yours is one of them, you could not have picked a better port for Cairo.
The usual shape: away at 7am, pyramids at 9.30am, Grand Egyptian Museum at noon, lunch at 2.30pm, leave at 3.30pm, back at the port at 5-5.30pm. Plenty of slack before the all-aboard.
With 12 hours rather than 10 we can add either the Coptic quarter (the Hanging Church and the Ben Ezra synagogue, 45 min) or Khan el Khalili (the bazaar, 1 hour). Read about Coptic Cairo and the Khan el Khalili. A Sokhna stopover fits two sites more than Port Said allows.
£120-£170 per person privately, £80-£120 from 6 people. The least tiring Egypt day any cruise offers.

Some Costa Toscana, MSC Splendida and Holland America routes cross the Mediterranean and then pass through Suez into the Red Sea, so the ship calls in Egypt twice: once on the north coast (Alexandria or Port Said) and once on the Red Sea (Safaga or Sokhna). Two bites at Egypt.
The combinations we offer:
Booked together, the pair generally costs less than two stand-alone excursions. One quote, and on day 2 a team that already greets you by name.
Beyond port days, browse our bespoke Egypt tours and our day excursions. If the cruise ends with 2 days in Cairo: three days in Cairo.

Going market rates in 2026 for a private shore excursion in Egypt with an English-speaking guide, per person:
Always included: transport from port to sites and back, a Ministry of Tourism licensed guide who speaks English, tickets to every temple listed, bottled water in the vehicle, and live tracking of your ship's ETA. Not included: lunch (£10-£20 depending on the restaurant), tips, and optional extras (Tutankhamun 300 EGP, inside the Khufu pyramid 900 EGP, Nefertari 1,400 EGP).
To set this against Egypt prices generally, see our 2026 Egypt travel budget guide. The visa costs 30 USD on arrival since March 2026, and it rarely troubles cruise passengers since most lines handle it for the whole group.

No question reaches us more often on WhatsApp about port days. This is how it plays out in practice:
| Criterion | MSC/Costa/Cunard Shore Excursion | Private English-speaking guide Sem Élégant |
|---|---|---|
| Price / person | £110-£170 | £90-£200 (decreasing) |
| Guide language | Systematic English | French holder |
| Group size | 35 to 60 people. | 2 to 8 people. (your group) |
| Schedules | Fixed, arrival at temples at peak times | Adjusted, opening before the on-board buses |
| Boat return guarantee | Yes (company liability) | Yes (real-time ETA tracking, contractual clause) |
| Lunch included | Standard buffet on site | A restaurant you pick, close by (£10-£20 extra) |
Price is not really the point; the gap is small. What differs is pace and attention. Walking the Valley of the Kings with an Egyptologist who talks you through the 18th dynasty, at your speed, bears no comparison with following a microphone in a group of 45. Set against the cost of a wasted port day, a £20 to £40 difference, where there is one, is easily justified.
There is one case where we do point people to the ship's excursion: travelling alone, with nobody to share the vehicle. For a single person the private day gets pricey (£190-£260). For two it is competitive; for four it is unbeatable.

Good news first: cruise passengers from the UK get a simplified entry procedure at most Egyptian ports. For your port-day excursion in Egypt, these are the points that count:

Rule of thumb: Mediterranean calls (Alexandria, Port Said) are best from October to April; Red Sea calls (Safaga, Sokhna) work in any month.
Alexandria in summer sits at 32-34°C, bearable, and the catacombs and library stay pleasant. Giza is another matter: 45°C in July and August makes a midday visit miserable. So we shift the day: leave the port at 5.30am, pyramids 7.30am-9.30am, then the air-conditioned museum, back by 2pm. Less relaxed, but doable.
Luxor from Safaga in July means 48°C in the Valley of the Kings; unless you cope unusually well with heat, we advise against it and steer you to Hurghada instead (beach and snorkelling).
Busiest periods: Christmas, Easter and October-November. Ships are full and so are the private minibuses; we reserve ours 60 days ahead. For the wider picture, our guide to when to visit Egypt in 2026.
Whether you searched for a stopover port said, an Alexandria call, an Egypt excursion or a cruise stop in Egypt, the same English-speaking team in Cairo runs the minibus, the guide and the ship tracking. A firm quote on WhatsApp within 24 hours, and a 45 minute return buffer written into every programme.

Ready-made itineraries from the SEV team; book on a WhatsApp quote, with an English-speaking adviser replying within 1 hour.
A Cairo port day: pyramids, Sphinx and museum over 1 to 2 days, made for cruise passengers.
Giza all day: Sphinx, necropolis, pyramids, English-speaking guide.
From a Luxor call, Karnak and the Valley of the Kings as a half day or full day.
A compact mini tour, ideal for stretching a call into 3-4 days.
A short after-the-cruise programme covering Cairo in 5 full days.

Yes, provided the ship is alongside for 11 hours or longer. Reckon 2h30-3h each way on the road and 3h at the sites (pyramids OR museum, not both), so 10-11 hours from quay to quay. With less than 11 hours we suggest staying put in Alexandria, which merits it.
Stopover in Alexandria city alone: £90-£130 per person for 4 people, £60-£90 from 6. Stopover in Alexandria towards Cairo (pyramids + museum): £150-£190 for 4 people, £100-£130 from 6. Full English-speaking guide, private van, entries included.
Yes, if the ship stays 10 hours or more. Count 4h30-5h on the road out, 5h-5h30 at the sites (Karnak, the town temple, the Colossi, 3 tombs in the Valley of the Kings) and 4h30 back. Roughly 12 hours in total: comfortable with 12 hours or more alongside, tight with 10-11 and something has to be trimmed.
Yes. We track the ship's ETA live on the line's website, we keep a 45 minute buffer on the way back, and that buffer is written into the contract. Five years and more than 400 port calls, and nobody has missed a ship. If rough seas cancel the call, you are refunded in full.
Usually not. MSC, Costa, Cunard and Holland America arrange a free group visa for passengers on escorted excursions. Going independently, the visa on arrival is 30 USD. Check with your line 72 hours before the call. See Egypt visa rules for Britons in 2026.
Sokhna, by a distance: a 1h30-2h drive against 2h30-3h from Port Said. Given the same 11 hour call, Sokhna hands you 2 hours of slack that Port Said cannot. If your ship offers Sokhna, choose it. If it calls at Port Said instead, we trim the day by dropping the museum or by taking the panorama rather than going inside Khufu's pyramid.
Sometimes, yes. Open since November 2025, the GEM is vast: the grand staircase, the colossal statues, Tutankhamun's treasures in full. Three hours inside is the bare minimum. If your ship is in Port Said for only 9-10 hours and the pyramids are already ticked off, the GEM on its own is a fine choice. See our page on the Grand Egyptian Museum.
Yes, and it is a regular request. Fly into Cairo two days before sailing (pyramids and museum the day before), then transfer to Alexandria on embarkation day with 3 hours at the Bibliotheca on the way. The reverse works too: disembark in Alexandria, 2 days in Cairo, fly home. Browse our Egypt tours.
A Sem Élégant party is 2 to 8 people at most, with a guide of your own who speaks English. The ship's tour runs to 40 to 60 people behind one guide addressing the whole coach. The prices sit close together (£110-£200 either way), but the pace and the depth of the history you hear are worlds apart. With 2 in the party, our clients nearly always go private.
It can be cancelled. The captain decides, typically 12-24 hours ahead of the ETA. Should weather or a technical problem cancel the call, we refund you in full. Mediterranean ports (Alexandria, Port Said) are more exposed to this in winter than the Red Sea ports.
Safaga, followed after you leave the ship by a Luxor to Aswan voyage on the river. The great sites come round twice: quickly on the port day, then at leisure on the Nile cruise. Perfect for a second Egypt trip. See our Nile cruises.
Our Sem Élégant Voyage standard: port to sites and back, an English-speaking guide, tickets for the main temples (Karnak, Luxor town temple, 3 tombs in the Valley, Giza, the Sphinx), bottled water in the minibus, live ETA tracking. Not covered: Egypt visa (30 USD), tips, lunch (£10-£20), optional tickets (Tutankhamun, Nefertari, inside Khufu), personal insurance.
