April 2026 update: an English-speaking agency in Cairo since 2012
For British holidaymakers, Hurghada is the way into Egypt's Red Sea. You book your own flight from London or Manchester and we take charge the moment you land: VIP welcome, paperwork, then the Cairo-Hurghada domestic flight, which we arrange along with every other internal flight (Cairo-Aswan, Aswan-Louxor, Cairo-Sharm el-Sheikh). Twenty minutes after touchdown in Hurghada you are in a room looking out over the water. Britons who get in touch usually have Hurghada in mind for one simple reason: the temperature hurghada rarely dips under 20°C, the egypt beach most popular with UK visitors is here, and for a good all-inclusive week the value beats Sharm el-Sheikh hands down.
Hurghada, though, is not one town. It is a chain of resorts spread along 60 kilometres of shoreline: central Hurghada, Sahl Hasheesh to the south, Makadi Bay beyond it, El Gouna to the north, then Sahl Hasheesh, Soma Bay and Safaga. Every resort draws its own crowd, has its own water depth off the beach and its own kind of reef. High-street agencies sell "Hurghada" as though it were one spot. It is nothing of the sort. Before our British clients pick a hotel, this is what we explain, working from the real weather hurghada for each month, the sort of holiday they want and what they can spend.

Nowhere else in Egypt matches what the red sea hurghada brings together: sea that stays warm in every month (21 to 29°C depending on the season), coral you can reach straight off the beach at most decent resorts, and hotels built over twenty years with British and European guests in mind. The egypt red sea takes 90% of the country's beach visitors, and Hurghada alone accounts for roughly 55%.
The three profiles that suit Hurghada perfectly:
Where Hurghada falls short: a Maldives-style ultra-luxury escape (head to The Chedi in El Gouna or the Kempinski at Soma Bay), a laid-back backpacker dive scene (that is Dahab), and reliable big marine life such as manta rays or hammerheads (Marsa Alam, or further south still).

No search brings more people to this guide than weather hurghada, and with good reason. Because the climate is coastal desert, a monthly average conceals wide swings between day and night and between a stiff northerly and still air. Below are the real figures for each month, taken from the weather station at Hurghada International Airport (HRG) across the past ten years:
Ten times a week someone asks us on WhatsApp: “Will I shiver swimming in Hurghada in April?” No, you will not, as long as your beach faces east or southeast rather than straight north. The Temperature hurghada of the sea in April sits near 23°C, warmer than the Mediterranean gets in July. As for the air, the temperature hurghada april ranges from 26 to 30°C by day, depending on how hard the wind blows.
For more on picking your dates, read our guide to visiting Egypt in summer if you are looking at July-August, and our month-by-month guide to when to go to Egypt.

No single egypt beach stands for all of them. Around Hurghada every resort has its own shoreline, its own gradient as you walk into the sea and its own amount of reef just offshore. Somebody has to describe this honestly, because hotel photographers choose their angles carefully.
Running from north to south, these are the principal egypt beach zones in and around Hurghada:
If you want an egypt beach that feels like "the Maldives on a European budget", Sahl Hasheesh and Soma Bay are the ones. For a sensible 4-star beach with children and snorkelling straight from the sand, nothing on this coast beats Makadi Bay. For our frank view of any particular resort, message us and we will send recent photos shot by our own guides, so you are not relying on dated brochure images.

Around Hurghada the red sea ranks among the five finest easily reached snorkelling areas anywhere, thanks to consistently warm water, visibility that often exceeds 25 metres and coral on the outer islands that remains in good shape. In holiday terms the red sea egypt means this Hurghada-Safaga corridor and its 40 listed spots. Technical divers will find more big animals around Marsa Alam, Elphinstone and Daedalus, but for recreational divers and snorkellers Hurghada covers most of what they want.
Key sites reached by day boat from Hurghada:
Dive schools we send our clients to, both with English-speaking staff: Easy Divers at Hurghada Marina and Blue Brothers Diving in El Gouna. Typical 2026 rates: try dive £30-£50, single dive £30, 10 dive package £220-£260 with kit. At both centres the DM (dive master) briefs in English, which makes a real difference when it comes to the safety briefing.
For more on the dive sites, our full Red Sea diving guide details all 40 spots, kit, precautions and vetted English-speaking schools.

Built by the Orascom group as a private development in the 1990s, El Gouna covers 36 km² of man-made lagoons. It is now the smartest resort on the Hurghada coast, with 18 hotels of 4 and 5 stars, a marina, an international school and restaurants in the hands of European chefs. Well-off British guests who want none of the mass all-inclusive scene end up here almost by default.
The flagship of upmarket El Gouna is The Chedi El Gouna : 130 rooms and suites, a private beach, a GHM spa and service with a Japanese-European touch. In 2026 a sea-view suite is roughly £220/night in low season and £350-£420 in high season. To compare it with the other English-speaking 5 stars on the Red Sea, see our pick of Egypt's luxury hotels.
El Gouna has other sound options: Steigenberger Golf Resort (with an 18-hole course), Sheraton Miramar (upmarket family), Ancient Sands Resort (colonial in style) and, for a fashionable crowd, Casa Cook (adults only, pared-back design). British travellers who want the Red Sea without the all-inclusive cliché are exactly the premium clients we place here.

Some 270 km south of Hurghada, Marsa Alam has an international airport of its own (RMF). Marsa Alam Egypt draws a different kind of traveller from Hurghada: seasoned divers, people who come to watch marine life, and those who value unspoilt nature. Hotels are fewer and further apart, the infrastructure lighter and the tempo slower.
What sets Marsa Alam apart from Hurghada:
British clients tend to pick Marsa Alam once they have done Hurghada and want something wilder. Its airport (RMF) only has seasonal services; failing that you fly into Hurghada and we sort out a domestic flight or the 3.5 hour drive down the coast road.

On Sinai's east coast, looking across to Saudi Arabia and 90 km north of Sharm el-Sheikh, sits Dahab. The backpacker-diver feel of Dahab Egypt could not be further from Hurghada's all-inclusives. Once a Bedouin fishing village, now a dive destination known the world over, Dahab is where English-speaking technical divers base themselves, drawn above all by one site: the Blue Hole.
Eight km north of Dahab, the blue hole egypt is a submarine sinkhole 110 metres deep. It is famous everywhere and not without controversy (unsupervised deep dives cause accidents all too often), yet within the first 30 metres it is also a superb site for snorkelling and recreational diving, with a vertiginous wall, healthy coral and light that shifts through the day. Dahab's English-speaking schools run it responsibly: 30 m maximum along the outer reef, and no one goes through the Arch at 55 m unless certified for trimix technical diving.
Who goes to Dahab: technical and leisure divers after a relaxed scene, couples who want prices 3 times lower than El Gouna for comparable comfort, and anyone pairing diving with the Sinai desert (Mount Sainte-Catherine, Mount Moïse). We arrange the Hurghada-Dahab journey by ferry from Safaga to Sharm el Sheikh and then up the coast road, 6 to 7 hours all told.

On the southern tip of Sinai, Sharm el sheikh is 500 km from Hurghada as the crow flies, with the Gulf of Suez in between. Egypt Sharm el Sheikh and egypt sharm el sheikh are simply two spellings, English and Arabic, of the same resort. Egypt's original modern beach resort, Sharm still has a largely Italian and Russian clientele, though British numbers have been growing again since 2023.
Hurghada versus Sharm for a British visitor, briefly:
A Hurghada excursion to Sharm and back in a day is technically possible (Safaga ferry plus road, 4pm door to door) but we advise against it. Far better: 5 nights in Hurghada then 3 nights in Sharm, linked by the 45 minute Nile Air flight Hurghada-Sharm. Our Egypt day trips page lists the boat trip packages.

Within 24 hours we will WhatsApp you a priced comparison and three hotel ideas, complete with recent photos from our guides. A proper itemised quote, with no obligation.

For a British visitor, Hurghada's appeal goes beyond the beach: it is the one Red Sea resort from which cultural day excursions to the great pharaonic sites are realistic. Luxor is 290 km by road or 1 hour by air, Cairo 480 km or 1 hour 30 minutes by air, and Abu Simbel can be done in a day on a Hurghada-Aswan-Abou Simbel flight.

Every day trip is set out in full on our Egypt day trips page. If you would rather pair Hurghada with a 10-12 day cultural tour than wear yourself out on day trips, look at our all inclusive Egypt tours or our Nile cruises with a Red Sea beach extension.

Hurghada International Airport (HRG) : 5 km from the centre of town, 20 min to Sahl Hasheesh, 25 min to Makadi Bay and 35 min to El Gouna. Our private English-speaking transfer costs £20 for 1-3 passengers and £30 for 4-7. The driver meets you with a name board as you leave customs. Our Egypt airports guide covers HRG, SSH, CAI and LXR in detail.
Formalities 2026 : British passport holders need a visa. The e-visa costs 30 USD online, or 30 USD on arrival (paid in dollar notes at the bank desk before passport control). Your passport must remain valid for 6 months beyond your return date. The latest position is in our Egypt visa guide.
Security : Hurghada is a protected tourist zone with police stationed permanently at the resorts, and the last serious incident is more than five years old. Steer clear of the northern coastal track toward Suez unless in convoy, and of the eastern desert beyond 30 km without a guide. Check the FCDO advice and our Egypt 2026 safety guide for the latest.
Health : the tap water is not drinkable, so stick to bottled. Sunburn is the chief hazard (UV index 9+ in summer). Expect the usual traveller's stomach in the first days and pack a small medical kit. No jabs are compulsory for arrivals from the UK. One rule specific to divers: leave 24 hours between your final dive and your flight home, or 48 hours after several dives.
Money and tips : in 2026 the Egyptian pound has settled at about 50 EGP for £0. Visa and MasterCard are taken at most 4-5 star hotels. Leave 10-15% in restaurants, per service in the hotel, and -£10 a day for the guide and driver. Every amount by service is in our Egypt tipping guide.
Coming to Hurghada for the first time as a woman on your own, or with a group of girlfriends? It is one of the calmest resorts in Egypt for solo travel; our guide for women travelling solo in Egypt has the detail.

Our English-speaking guides point to October and April-May. The Weather hurghada in October means 30°C by day, sea at 27°C, few crowds and low rates. April brings 28°C days, sea at 23°C and superb light, though Easter is best avoided on a tight budget. July-August are very hot (36-38°C) with the sea at 29°C, which suits keen divers and snorkellers.
It does: 22 to 23°C from December through March, which beats the Mediterranean in July. You can swim in any month, though a 3 mm wetsuit helps for long snorkelling sessions in January-February.
Central Hurghada is buzzing and cheap, El Gouna is smart with its lagoons, and Sahl Hasheesh is quiet, family-friendly and blessed with lovely beaches. Taking children to the Red Sea for the first time, choose Sahl Hasheesh or Makadi Bay. Couples after something refined should look at El Gouna or Soma Bay. Serious divers belong at Hurghada Marina.
It is, either by air (2pm door to door, £260-£320 per person) or by coach (4pm, £70-£110). Unless money is really tight we suggest flying, because the coach leaves you shattered for the rest of your holiday. The itinerary takes in Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, the Colossi of Memnon and Luxor temple.
Hurghada for a first Red Sea holiday, with plenty of direct flights and cultural trips close at hand. Marsa alam for a return visit or for anyone after technical diving, big marine life (dolphins, dugongs, manta rays) and a wilder feel. Marsa Alam has less infrastructure, and Hurghada packages usually cost less.
Experienced divers get Ras Mohammed and the Straits of Tiran at Sharm el-Sheikh, a notch above Hurghada's sites. Recreational divers and snorkellers will find Giftun and Careless Reef at Hurghada more than enough. Flying direct from the UK, Sharm works out dearer.
The Temperature hurghada april : 26 to 30°C by day, 18 to 20°C at night, sea 23°C. A superb time to come: warm enough to swim, never oppressive, and quiet apart from Easter. It is among the months we most often suggest to our British clients.
Yes, if you are a technical diver or a discerning backpacker. The blue hole egypt and Dahab's reefs sit a rung above Hurghada. Getting there means the Safaga-Sharm ferry and then the road, 6-7 hours, so it only makes sense for a stay of at least 5 nights, never as a day trip.
Yes at Sahl Hasheesh, Makadi Bay and Soma Bay, where the sea shelves gently, stays shallow and has no current. Central Hurghada is less ideal (reef at the surface in places, and crowded). El Gouna works too, though the main beach has no reef in front of it.
A daytime coach runs from Hurghada to Luxor (5 hours) and you board the boat that afternoon. Many of our clients pair 7 nights in Hurghada with a 4 night Luxor-Aswan cruise. The options are on our Nile cruise page.
For families and couples wanting a pure beach holiday with a couple of cultural trips, yes; for foodies and the curious who want to escape the resort walls, no. For our mid-budget clients an all-inclusive in Hurghada usually works out better value than room-only. The reliable English-speaking 4 and 5 star houses (Steigenberger, Jaz, Labranda) deliver.
Base 2 adults 7 nights excluding flight: 5-star all-inclusive in Makadi or Sahl Hasheesh £920-£1,390, 4-star all-inclusive £540-£850, charming hotel El Gouna £1,850-£2,690. France-Hurghada flight £270-£420 in average season. Excursions extra £150-£620 depending on package. Our quotes calculate all this on WhatsApp within 24 hours.
