The ideal months for a Nile cruise run from October to April: daytime highs sit between 22°C and 30°C, evenings are fresh (10-15°C) and the light is a photographer's dream. How much does an 8-day Nile + Cairo cruise cost?

Is Abu Simbel included in the base rate?
Not in the Essential or Comfort versions. Abu Simbel means leaving Aswan at 3am, a 4-hour drive out and another 4 hours back, and it carries real logistical cost (+£140/person). For Essential and Comfort we sell it as an optional extra, with a preferential rate on the Comfort version. It comes as standard in the Prestige version. The site itself is extraordinary (the two colossal temples of Ramses II and Nefertari) and we recommend it to anyone with a taste for epic ancient history and the stamina for a long day.
When is the best time for a Nile cruise 2026?
The prime season for a Nile cruise is October to April, when daytime temperatures of 22 to 30°C make the open-air sites (Karnak, Philae, the Valley of the Kings) a pleasure rather than a trial. January and February are the coolest and easiest months. March, April, October and November strike the best balance of weather, price and crowds. May to September brings serious heat (38-42°C at midday): excursions start very early (6-7am) and low-season fares come down noticeably, which suits flexible travellers, families tied to the summer holidays and anyone watching the budget.
Is this cruise suitable for children? From what age?
Absolutely, and it is one of the packages British families request most. The rhythm is adjusted for younger travellers, and children are captivated by the pyramids and the ship (a pool on board, stepping inside a genuine pharaoh's tomb, the mummies at the Grand Egyptian Museum). We suggest it from age 6 and offer a reduced rate for 6 to 11 year olds sharing a room or cabin with two adults. Cots and lightweight pushchairs can be provided free on request. With very young children (under 3) we would suggest adding a beach stay (Hurghada or Marsa Alam) before or after the main trip.
Are domestic flights Cairo - Luxor and Aswan - Cairo included?
Yes, both internal flights come as standard in every version: Cairo → Luxor (on the morning of D3, ready for embarkation) and Aswan → Cairo (D7 or D8 according to the version). Both are flown by Egyptair (1h05 Cairo-Luxor, 1h15 Aswan-Cairo). Private transfers to and from each airport are included. Hand luggage plus a 23 kg checked bag is covered on the internal flights. There is nothing further to pay locally for these sectors.
How much time do we actually spend on the cruise? What stops?
The sailing portion is 4 nights / 5 days: you board at Luxor on D3 and step off at Aswan on D7. Ports of call: Luxor (a day and a half covering the Valley of the Kings, Deir el-Bahari, Karnak and Luxor temple), then on to Edfu (temple of Horus), then Kom Ombo (the twin temple), and finally Aswan (Philae, the High Dam and a felucca sail). Between excursions you are aboard (sailing by morning or evening, with entertainment, the pool and superb views over the Nubian riverbanks), and at each site your English-speaking guide leads the visit.
Do I need an Egyptian visa and how to get it?
Yes, British passport holders need a tourist visa. You have three routes: (1) a visa on arrival at Cairo Airport (30 USD in cash at the airport bank counter, about 10 minutes, and our recommended option because it is the simplest), (2) the Egyptian e-visa applied for online at visa2egypt.gov.eg (30 USD, to be secured 7 days before you fly), or (3) a visa issued by the Egyptian consulate in London (slower). Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date, with no exceptions. A visa reminder with step-by-step instructions reaches you 15 days before departure.
What tips should you expect on site during the cruise?
Gratuities are not part of the fare (the custom in Egypt, where they make up a sizeable share of what crews and guides earn). Budget roughly £120-£150 per person across the full 8 days, split as follows: your English-speaking Egyptologist (-£10/day/person), transfer drivers (/day/person), the ship's crew (a shared envelope of £20/person handed to the butler when the cruise ends), and hotel porters (/luggage).
