Combined Cairo + Dahabiya Nile 10 Days: Pyramids, Grand Museum & Intimate Cruise
Our Cairo and dahabiya combination is the 10-day signature journey for travellers who want to see Egypt differently, well away from the crowded floating hotels. The plan: three nights in Cairo taking in the pyramids of Giza before your Nile cruise, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) which opened in 2024, plus Memphis and Saqqara, then five days on a traditional dahabiya sailing the Nile with no more than 12-16 fellow passengers.
Where the big ships carry 150 to 300 passengers, a dahabiya sails without an engine and ties up at private islands and inlets that deeper hulls cannot reach. Our five-star dahabiya covers the finest section of the river (Esna, Edfou, Silsileh, Kom Ombo) with moorings all to yourselves, where the Nile falls back into the hush of the pharaohs. If you want an intimate Nile cruise, this is the one.
Over these 10 days in Egypt you get the headline sights (the Giza plateau, Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, the temple of Philae) together with the most authentic dahabiya route between Luxor and Aswan, the very one 19th-century writers such as Gustave Flaubert sailed. From £1,840 you have your own English-speaking Egyptologist guide, full board and WhatsApp assistance around the clock. A visit to the Grand Egyptian Museum is part of it as well; opened at the end of 2024, its 100,000 exhibits (the entire Tutankhamun treasure among them) will reshape every Egypt itinerary in 2026. We believe it is the fullest dahabiya Nile holiday available to British travellers, built as a genuine luxury Nile cruise alternative to the big premium operators.
The Signature option (£2,220) has Abu Simbel built in, a trip TUI and Rive Gauche sell as an add-on (+110 to +£100). Step up to Prestige (£2,840) for a panoramic suite on the dahabiya and a helicopter flight above the pyramids. Rounding off this Cairo, Luxor and Aswan itinerary is an optional private dahabiya for family parties, with the whole sailing boat reserved for you from 6 passengers.

The Dahabiya Explained: Why It Is the Finest Way to See the Nile

A traditional dahabiya carries lateen sails and has no main engine (at most a quiet auxiliary motor for manoeuvring), a design that descends straight from the boats of the pharaohs. Through the 19th and early 20th centuries it was how well-heeled Europeans chose to explore Egypt: Flaubert, Agatha Christie and Pierre Loti all travelled this way.
3 fundamental differences vs. a classic liner
- Numbers on board: 8 to 16 passengers, against 150-300 on a large ship. At times there are more crew than guests, so the service is remarkably personal.
- Under sail: no throb of an engine, no vibration. What you hear is the river itself, fishermen calling out, the muezzin from village mosques.
- Moorings of your own: Béchesh island, Silsileh, the sandstone inlets between Esna and Edfou, all out of bounds to deep-draught vessels. The boat anchors there for the night and you sleep beneath the stars.
Why pick this over a large cruise ship?
Over an identical 10-day Cairo and Nile cruise, the dahabiya works out roughly 30% dearer, and in return the experience is in another league for authenticity. If budget comes first, look at our five-star large ship (from £350). If exclusivity comes first, the dahabiya wins hands down.

Your Questions on the 10-Day Cairo + Dahabiya Trip

What differentiates a dahabiya from a classic cruise ship?
Think of a dahabiya as a traditional sailing boat taking 8 to 16 guests, where a large ship takes 150 to 300. It moves under sail with no main engine, moors at islands the big vessels cannot approach, and frequently has more crew than passengers. For an intimate Nile cruise there is nothing to match it.
Which dahabiya do you use for this handset?
Depending on your dates and what is free, we place you on one of several 5★ partner boats: Meroe, Nour El Nil or Sonesta Dahabeya. Each is a five-star dahabiya with air-conditioned cabins, en-suite bathrooms and a panoramic sun deck. Which one you sail on is confirmed when you book.
Can the dahabiya be privatized for a family group?
It is. A private dahabiya can be arranged for parties of 6 adults or more (Prestige package, supplement quoted on request). Perfect for a milestone birthday, a honeymoon or a three-generation family of 8 to 12.
Is Abu Simbel included in all packages?
No. Abu Simbel is included in the formula Signature (£2,220) and Prestige (£2,840). In the Essential formula (£1,840), it is an option at +£190/person (less expensive than TUI at +£100, but aligned with our price transparency policy).
Is the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) really different from the Cairo Museum?
Without question. The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) opened its doors at the end of 2024 beside the Giza plateau and is steadily taking over from the old Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square. It holds 100,000 objects (against 120,000 at Tahrir) and shows the full Tutankhamun treasure together for the very first time. Entry is part of every package we sell.
Is the trip suitable for families with children?
Yes, from age 7. A dahabiya is a safe setting for children (broad decks, none of a big ship's bustle). With children under 6 we suggest our Smile of the Sphinx tour, which keeps river time short.
What is the best season for this cruise?
Between October and April the days are mild (22-28°C). Steer clear of July-August, when the valley tops 40°C. March-April and October-November are the busiest windows, so reserve 3-4 months ahead.
Are flights included?
All your domestic flights in Egypt are included and organized by us (Cairo-Aswan, Aswan-Luxor, Aswan-Abu Simbel): you go from one site to another without any logistics. Only your flight to Egypt remains your responsibility, you are free to choose the company and departure city that suit you.
Can we extend the Dahabiya or add a Red Sea extension?
Certainly. Add 3 nights in Hurghada from +£300, 3 nights at Marsa Alam from +£350, or stay on the dahabiya 2 additional nights from +£220. Message us on WhatsApp and we will price it for you.
How to book and what is the cancellation policy?
The cancellation scale depends on how close to departure you withdraw and is written into your contract before you pay. We strongly advise cancellation cover (from £40 per person).
What Our Travelers Are Saying

“The dahabiya turned out to be the highlight. Mooring at an island all to ourselves, eating under the stars mid-river: we could have stepped out of an Agatha Christie story. Our guide Ahmed seems to know every hieroglyph personally. Cairo was superb too, largely thanks to the brand new GEM. »
- Christine L., Aix-en-Provence, March 2026 (Signature formula)“We took the whole dahabiya for the 8 of us, 3 generations of one family. Prestige earned every penny: a sunrise helicopter ride over Giza, the panoramic suite, our own private day at Abu Simbel. The SEV team were faultless and on WhatsApp 24/7. »
- Famille Bernard, Lyon, February 2026 (Prestige formula + privatization)“We had quotes from TUI and Voyageurs du Monde for much the same trip, and SEV came in 40% cheaper. 16 of us on the dahabiya struck just the right balance between privacy and company. The Grand Museum simply takes your breath away. »
