Giza · 1h30

Pyramids of Giza

Three royal pyramids of the 4th dynasty: Cheops (146 m, the sole survivor of the 7 wonders of the ancient world), Khafre (136 m, its peak still wearing the original limestone casing) and Mykerinos (66m). The van drives onto the plateau; the standard ticket (£20) gets you in. Going inside Cheops is optional at +£20, and non-refundable should your flight be delayed.

Giza · 30 min

Great Sphinx of Giza

A lion's body with a human head, 73 m long and 20 m high, cut from a limestone outcrop around 2500 BC, the face generally identified as pharaoh Khafre's. The enclosure is secure and has its own photo platform. Those “older than the pyramids” theories intrigue everyone; our guide lays out the scientific evidence frankly.

Giza · 1h30

Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM)

Opened in part in 2024, this is the largest archaeological museum in the world, with 168,000 m² and 100,000 objects. Our stopover version takes 90 min and goes straight to the essentials: Ramses II's colossus in the atrium, the grand staircase, and the Tutankhamun gallery (5,000 items, the gold death mask among them). Fast track included.

Cairo · 1 hour

Khan el-Khalili (VIP Stopover)

A Fatimid bazaar dating from the 14th century, the trading centre of Islamic Cairo: spices, copperware, silver, oud perfume. Pause at El Fishawy cafe, open 24/7 since 1797, a Naguib Mahfouz haunt. Bargain hard, 30-40% under the first price is normal. Your guide interprets EN-AR live.

Giza · lunch

9 Pyramids Lounge (VIP Stopover)

A terrace restaurant 300 m from the pyramids, with an unobstructed view from every table. Egyptian buffet (mezze, koshari, grilled chicken) plus drinks, £30/pers, included in the VIP formula. A panoramic setting many long-stay visitors never get to enjoy.

Saqqara · option

Saqqara + Step Pyramid (option +£30)

With more than 10 hours to play with, add the Saqqara necropolis : Djoser's step pyramid (Egypt's oldest, 2650 BC) and the mastabas of Ti and Mereruka, whose reliefs depict everyday life. Allow 1 hour 30 minutes extra. Must be booked ahead.

Cairo · evening option

Pyramids Sound & Light Show (option +£20)

Flying out after 8pm? Take in the sound and light show on the pyramid esplanade (45 min; the Monday/Wednesday/Saturday 8.30pm showings are narrated in French, ask us about English dates). Khufu's voice tells the story while the Great Pyramid and the Sphinx are lit up.

CAI · comfort

Airport Lounge (option +£30)

Stopover longer than 12 hours but no wish to head for the pyramids? Book premium lounge access (Pearl Lounge, Terminal 3): buffet, wifi, showers and a nap zone. The restful choice when you land exhausted and would rather stay put.

FAQ - Cairo Stopover Tour

FAQ - Cairo Stopover Tour
FAQ - Cairo Stopover Tour

Is leaving the airport between flights a gamble?

Not when it is properly organised. Cairo is Africa's most visited capital (13 million tourists in 2024), with a mature tourism infrastructure. Our private van, door to door, removes the usual surprises, and we guarantee you are back 3 hours before departure. Should traffic ever cause a problem, an extremely rare event, we handle the re-booking (SEV policy, never yet invoked).

Do I need a visa for a Cairo stopover tour?

Yes, though it is free for British passport holders in transit under 24 h through the same airport. Our agent arranges it on arrival in 5-10 minutes against your onward ticket. If the transit runs beyond 24 hours, or you switch airports, you will need an e-visa costing 30 USD; we will tell you ahead of the date.

What if my inbound flight runs late?

Your flight is followed real time via flight tracker (FlightAware/FR24). Under 2 h late, we adjust the programme (Express instead of Essential). Over 2 hours and the connection at risk, you get free cancellation and a full refund. Dynamic planning, no drivers idling.

Does it work for children and older travellers?

Yes. The van takes you around the Giza plateau, so there is no trekking, and the GEM has modern lifts and toilets. We set the pace to suit you: air-conditioned breaks, water without limit, loo stops at safe cafes (Marriott Mena House). Travelling with a pushchair? Tell us and we book a van with a boot to match.

What is the minimum time needed to see the pyramids between flights?

You need 4 hours of availability at the very least (roughly 5 hours of total stopover, once you take off 45 minutes pre-flight and 30 minutes for airport transit). Any less and we will politely decline: far better a lounge than a rushed glimpse of the pyramids with no safety margin. 6 h = comfortable, 8 h = luxury.

Can we go inside the Cheops Pyramid?

Yes, for +£20/pers on top of any formula. You reach the king's chamber along a 39 m sloping passage. Not recommended for claustrophobics + photography prohibited. Allow 30 min there and back. Khafre's or Mykerinos's pyramid make good alternatives (+£10, quieter, smaller quotas).

What GEM access comes with the Essential and VIP formulas?

Both Essential and VIP include the standard GEM (£20 value) ticket with fast-track entry. The guide leads a focused 90-minute tour: the great Ramses II hall, the grand staircase and the Tutankhamun gallery. Should the Tutankhamun mortuary chamber be open and you want it, budget +£20 more, payable on the spot.

Can Mediterranean Cruise Travelers Enjoy?

Yes. Our Cruise Call formula £150/pers serves ships calling at Alexandria and Port Said. We collect you on the quayside, drive 2.5-3 hours to Cairo for the pyramids, Sphinx, GEM highlights and lunch, and have you back aboard 2 hours before sailing. Works with Costa, MSC, Princess, Celebrity and Norwegian.

Is a night-time Cairo stopover tour actually possible?

Partly, yes. The pyramids shut at 5pm (seasonal, so check), but the sound and light show at 8.30pm (Monday/Wednesday/Saturday, narrated in French) makes a memorable alternative if your flight leaves around 1am. Add Khan el-Khalili, which stays open late, and dinner, and you have an unusual 4-hour “night stopover”.

How does this differ from your “Cairo” package?

Our Cairo package is a multi-day stay (2-4 nights at least) with hotel, time to explore, and Saqqara, Memphis and citadel options. The stopover circuit exists for quick visits squeezed between two flights. If a transit is all your schedule allows, take the stopover; for a proper exploration, take “Cairo”.
