Direct rule: one excursion cruise stopover Egypt successful depends on three variables. The distance between the port and the site, the land passage time of your liner, and the means of transport (bus, van, domestic plane in certain cases).
Ports of call on the Mediterranean and Red Sea in 2026:
What happens if you take the shore excursion instead: 140-220 EUR per person, English-speaking guide, 40-60 passengers, block departure, block arrival, crowded temples at the same slots as the other 5 buses on your boat. On Alexandria stopover specifically, the shore excursion often includes the Qaitbay Citadel AND the library AND the catacombs in 8 hours - it's tense to the point of spoiling all three.
Our alternative: 8-seater van, English-speaking guide, departure when the sites open, lunch in a local restaurant we know, return to the port with 45 minutes of margin before boarding reminder.
Short version: your liner docks in Alexandria for 8-14 hours. You have two possible scenarios. Stay in Alexandria and see the city. Or drive to Cairo in 2.5-3 hours (220 km by desert highway), do the pyramids + museum, return in 4-5 hours. Both work, the first fits wider.
What we see in one Alexandria stopover full city version:
To dig the city: our complete guide to Alexandria. You return to eat on the boat or we arrange lunch for you at the Greek Club or Balbaa - two English-speaking classics that we have been using for years.
The other scenario sinceAlexandria stopover : Cairo. Desert highway road, 2h30 to 3h depending on traffic, Alex exit. 2h30 on site (pyramids + panorama + Sphinx OR Grand Egyptian Museum - not both, time does not permit). Return 2:30-3 hours. Total door to door 10-11 hours, therefore reserved for stopovers 12 hours+.
Recommended choice: if this is your first Egypt, Cairo. If you return, Alexandria - few American travelers really see it.
Good to know: Safaga is the closest Egyptian Red Sea port to Luxor - 230 km, 4.5 to 5 hours drive via the Sahl Hasheesh-Safaga-Luxor road. Security convoy departing from Safaga in the morning (6:30 a.m. in 2026), returning at the end of the day.
The standard diagram of a Safaga stopover to Luxor in 12 hours:
We will call you back to the port at 10 p.m. or 10:30 p.m. depending on your company - we check the MSC or Costa or Cunard manifest in advance. Never a late customer with us in 2023, 2024 or 2025 - we leave 45 minutes margin on return.
Fatigue: real. 10 actual hours on the road and sites, plus the morning and evening jostling. For 2 adults and a teenager, it's manageable. With 2 children under 8 years old, we advise against it - we then suggest a stopover Safaga to Hurghada in beach format + Bedouin lunch (70 EUR/pers), more suitable. See Hurghada guide.
Price of a private Safaga Luxor stopover excursion with English-speaking guide: 180-260 EUR per person for 2-4 participants, decreasing to 120-170 EUR from 6. The equivalent MSC shore excursion costs 190-230 EUR in English group 40. To explore the destination: complete guide to Luxor and Karnak temple.
A question about your cruise stopover?
Send us your liner itinerary on WhatsApp, we respond within 1 hour with a stopover quote by stopover. English-speaking team based in Cairo, no call center.
Port Said is the northern entrance to the Suez Canal, 220 km from Cairo. A Port Said stopover on an MSC or Costa liner - often 10-11 hours at the dock - makes for exactly one intense Cairo day.
The format we arrange:
It's tense. If your liner leaves Port Said at 8 p.m., we’re holding on. If he leaves at 6 p.m. (this sometimes happens with Cunard), we skip either the Grand Museum or the panorama, we ask you the choice in advance. Private price with English-speaking guide: 180-240 EUR per person, 120-170 EUR from 6 participants. See the practical guide to the pyramids of Giza.
Less ambitious but more relaxed alternative: pyramids + Cairo museum (old) + Nubian lunch, with a shorter return route because we skip Giza-north and return directly. 170-220 EUR per person. Good if you have already seen the pyramids elsewhere and want to see something else.
Ain Sokhna is the closest Egyptian port to Cairo: 120 km, 1h30-2h drive via the Cairo-Sokhna highway. Some MSC and Costa liners will stop there for 10-12 hours in 2026 - if this is your case, you have chosen the best port in Egypt for Cairo.
The standard format: departure 7 a.m., pyramids 9:30 a.m., Grand Egyptian Museum 12 p.m., lunch 2:30 p.m., return 3:30 p.m., port 5-5:30 p.m. Comfortable margin before your boarding reminder.
What we add in this version 12 hours instead of 10 hours: the Coptic district (hanging church, Ben Ezra synagogue, 45 min), or the Khan el Khalili (market, 1 hour). See Coptic district of Cairo and Khan el Khalili. A Sokhna stopover leaves room for two more sites than Port Said.
Price: 160-220 EUR per person privately, decreasing to 110-150 EUR from 6 participants. Egypt's best seen-on-tired cruise.
On the Costa Toscana, MSC Splendida or Holland America itineraries which go to the Mediterranean then go back via Suez to the Red Sea, you sometimes have two stops in Egypt: one on the Mediterranean (Alexandria or Port Said), one on the Red Sea (Safaga or Sokhna). Two chances to see Egypt.
The combinations we offer:
Combined price: often 10-15% cheaper than 2 separate excursions. A single quote, a team that already knows your first names on the second day.
To expand beyond stopovers: our tailor-made Egypt tours and our day trips. If your cruise includes 2 days in Cairo at the end of the trip: Cairo in 3 days.
Public market rates for a shore excursion in Egypt private with English-speaking guide, per person, 2026:
Standard included: port-site-port transport, English-speaking guide qualified by the Ministry of Tourism, entrances to all the temples mentioned, mineral water on board, real-time monitoring of your boat ETA. Not included: lunch (12-25 EUR depending on restaurant), tips, optional entries (Tutankhamun 300 EGP, Khufu interior 900 EGP, Nefertari 1,400 EGP).
To cross with the rest of the English-speaking market: our Egypt travel budget guide 2026. Visa at 30 USD on site since March 2026 - rarely a problem for cruise lines, most companies manage in groups.
This is the #1 question we receive on WhatsApp for stopovers. Here is what we see in practice:
| Criterion | MSC/Costa/Cunard Shore Excursion | Private English-speaking guide Sem Élégant |
|---|---|---|
| Price / person | 140-220 EUR | 120-260 EUR (decreasing) |
| Guide language | Systematic English | French holder |
| Group size | 35 to 60 people. | 2 to 8 people. (your group) |
| Schedules | Fixed, arrival at temples at peak times | Adjusted, opening before the on-board buses |
| Boat return guarantee | Yes (company liability) | Yes (real-time ETA tracking, contractual clause) |
| Lunch included | Standard buffet on site | Restaurant of your choice, next door (12-25 EUR extra) |
The real issue isn't the price - it's close. It’s the rhythm and the language. A English-speaking guide who tells you about the 18th dynasty while walking in the Valley of the Kings has no equivalent in terms of an English shore excursion in a group of 45. The opportunity cost of a missed stopover justifies a 30 to 50 EUR difference if it exists.
The only case where we recommend the shore excursion: if you are traveling alone and no other French speaker is sharing with you. For 1 person in private the stopover becomes expensive (250-340 EUR). Two of us are competitive, four of us unbeatable.

Good news: French cruise lines benefit from a simplified entry regime in most Egyptian ports. For your Egypt stopover excursion, here are the details that matter:
See also our Egypt visa guide for French 2026 and our security guide Egypt 2026 which covers the Safaga-Louxor convoys.
Short rule: October to April for Mediterranean stopovers (Alexandria, Port Said), all year round for Red Sea stopovers (Safaga, Sokhna).
In summer, Alexandria tolerates 32-34°C but the catacombs and library remain comfortable. In Giza on the other hand, 45°C in July-August kills the pleasure of the visit at midday. We then adapt: departure from port 5:30 a.m., pyramids 7:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m., museum afterwards (air-conditioned), return 2 p.m. Less serene but tenable.
For Luxor from Safaga in July: 48°C in the Valley of the Kings, we do not recommend unless you tolerate exceptional heat. We then redirect towards Hurghada (beach + snorkeling).
Peak season: Christmas, Easter, October-November. The liners are full and so are the private vans - we block ours 60 days in advance at our place. To cross with the rest of the country: our guide when to go to Egypt in 2026.
That we are looking for a stopover port said or a stopover in Alexandria, which we type Egypt excursion or cruise stopover in Egypt, it is the same English-speaking team in Cairo which operates the van, the guide and the liner monitoring. Firm quote within 24 hours on WhatsApp, 45 min return margin included in each program.
Turnkey tours prepared by the SEV team, reservation on quote by WhatsApp - English-speaking advisor within 1 hour.
Stopover in Cairo - pyramids, Sphinx, museum in 1 to 2 days, ideal for cruise passengers.
Full day Giza: pyramids, Sphinx, necropolis, English-speaking guide.
Karnak and Valley of the Kings from the Luxor stopover, half-day or full day format.
Compressed mini circuit perfect for extending a 3-4 day stopover.
Short post-stopover format to explore Cairo in 5 full days.
Yes if your liner stays at the dock for 11 hours or more. Road 2h30-3h outward, 2h30-3h return, 3h on site (pyramids OR museum, not both). Total door to door 10-11am. Below 11 hours of layover we recommend staying in Alexandria - the city deserves it.
Alexandria stopover city alone: 120-170 EUR per person for 4 participants, 80-120 EUR from 6. Alexandria stopover to Cairo (pyramids + museum): 190-250 EUR for 4 people, 130-170 EUR from 6. Full English-speaking guide, private van, entries included.
Yes if your ship stays 10 hours or more at the dock. Road 4h30-5h outward, 5h-5h30 on site (Karnak, Luxor city, Colossi, Valley of the Kings 3 tombs), return 4h30. Total around 12 hours, so stopovers 12 hours+ comfortable, stopovers 10-11 hours tense with cut in the visit.
Yes. We follow the ETA in real time via the company's website, we leave 45 minutes of margin upon return to port, and it is contractual. In 5 years and 400+ stops operated, zero missed customers. If the stopover is canceled due to heavy seas, full refund within 72 hours.
Often no. On MSC, Costa, Cunard and Holland America, a free group visa is issued for passengers on a supervised excursion. For independent passengers: visa on arrival 30 USD. Confirm 72 hours before your stopover with your company. See Egypt visa for French 2026.
Sokhna clearly wins: 1h30-2h drive compared to 2h30-3h from Port Said. On the same 11-hour stopover, Sokhna gives you 2 hours of margin that Port Saïd does not have. If your liner does Sokhna, take Sokhna. If your liner goes to Port Said, we adapt by skipping the museum or choosing the panorama rather than the Khufu interior.
In some cases yes. The GEM, open since November 2025, is monumental - monumental staircase, colossal statues, complete Tutankhamun collection. 3 hours on site is a minimum. If your liner stays 9-10 hours in Port Said and you have already seen the pyramids, GEM alone is an excellent choice. See Great Egyptian Museum.
Yes and we do it often. Arrival Cairo D-2 (pyramids + museum day D-1), transfer Alexandria boarding day with 3 hours at Bibliotheca en route. Same logic on the return, disembarkation in Alexandria, Cairo for 2 days, return flight. See our Egypt tours.
A Sem Élégant group is 2 to 8 people maximum with a English-speaking guide. The shore excursion is for 40 to 60 people with a bilingual English-speaking guide. The prices are close (140-260 EUR for both), but the pace and the quality of historical commentary have nothing to do with it. Our clients almost systematically choose private with 2 participants.
Yes. Decision taken by the captain of the liner generally 12-24 hours before the ETA. We provide a full refund within 72 hours in the event of cancellation due to weather or technical reasons. Mediterranean stopovers (Alexandria, Port Said) are more sensitive in winter than Red Sea stopovers.
Safaga + Luxor-Aswan extension on the Nile after disembarkation. You see the major sites twice: a quick stopover version, a detailed version on a Nile cruise. Ideal for second trip to Egypt. See our Nile cruise.
Standard Week Elegant Travel: round-trip port-site transport, English-speaking guide, entrances to main temples (Karnak, Luxor city, Valley 3 tombs, Giza, Sphinx), mineral water on board the van, ETA boat tracking. Not included: Egypt visa (30 USD), tips, lunch (12-25 EUR), optional entries (Tutankhamun, Nefertari, Khufu interior), personal insurance.
