Luxor Egypt concentrates on ten kilometers of banks of the Nile a third of the world's pharaonic heritage: the temple of Karnak, the temple of Luxor, the Valley of the Kings, the temple of Hatshepsut, the colossi of Memnon and Medinat Habu. UNESCO classified the complex as a world heritage site in 1979. For a English-speaking traveler getting off a Paris-Cairo flight then a night train or a domestic flight, visit Luxor in 2026, it is going back 3,500 years to ancient Thebes, capital of the Middle and New Kingdom. Luxor, the ancient Ouaset, is not a town to cross: it is a destination in its own right which deserves three to five full days, with a English-speaking Egyptologist guide, before or after a cruise on the Nile to Aswan.

Why Luxor Egypt: the largest open-air museum in the world

We call Luxor the largest open-air museum in the world, and it's not a tourist figure of speech. On the east bank of the Nile stand the temple of Luxor in the heart of the modern city and the temple of Karnak 3 kilometers to the north, connected by the 2.7 kilometer avenue of the sphinxes reopened in 2021 after thirty years of excavations. On the west bank, the Theban necropolis extends over 8 kilometers: Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, temple of Hatshepsut, Medinat Habu, Colossi of Memnon, Ramesseum, tombs of the nobles. No other city in the world concentrates so many pharaonic monuments within a 10 kilometer radius.

For a English-speaking traveler who hesitates between Cairo, Luxor, Aswan and the Red Sea, Luxor is the ancient sequence par excellence. Cairo offers the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Luxor gives the temples and tombs. Aswan gives the Nubian borders. The Red Sea offers diving. When we organize a Luxor travel tailor-made, we always plan a Luxor-Aswan cruise loop to connect the two religious capitals of the Nile.

Luxor Egypt is also the most natural starting point for a Luxor Aswan cruise from 4 to 7 nights serving Karnak, Luxor, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Philae. Many of our customers who write to us on WhatsApp for a stay in Egypt end up combining Cairo (3 nights) + Luxor (2 nights) + Nile cruise (4 nights) + Aswan (1 night). This is the best-calibrated itinerary for English-speaking travelers.

In practice, a luxor egypt travel coherent in 2026 is resolved around three key questions: how many days luxor merit according to your overall Egypt tour (2, 3, 5 or 7 days, see our dedicated section), what to do in Luxor East bank versus West bank (temples, necropolis, hot air balloon, Nile cruise), and when to go depending on the weather. Our English-speaking advisors answer these three questions within 24 hours on WhatsApp at +20 10 96569859.

Luxor weather and best time to visit

The climate of Luxor is continental desert, drier and hotter than that of Cairo. The question of weather Luxor do not pose as for Hurghada or Marsa Alam: here, we do not come to swim, we come to visit temples and tombs in full sun. The difference between November and June completely changes the experience.

The best time to visit Luxor runs from October to April. Daytime temperatures 22-30°C, cool nights at 10-18°C, perfectly clear skies, no rain. December-January are the coolest and most pleasant months for walking for hours in the temples and in the Valley of the Kings. February and March are ideal: the sun is mild, the colors of the reliefs are magnificent in the late afternoon, the tombs are not stifling.

From June to August, the heat reaches 40 to 45°C in the shade in Luxor. The tombs of the Valley of the Kings exceed 50°C indoors during the middle of the day. We do not recommend this period, except for travelers who leave before 6 a.m. and return at 10:30 a.m. May and September are acceptable transition months: 32-36°C, still bearable if the program is well aligned with cool hours. The best time Luxor for a family with children clearly remains November-March.

Practical point: the English-speaking high season runs from mid-December to the beginning of April, timed to the French school holidays (Christmas, February, Easter). During these windows, Luxor-Aswan cruise ships fill up 3-4 months in advance for superior cabins and dahabiyas. Our agency receives the peak of WhatsApp requests in September-October for December-February departures. Check out our complete guide to the best time to travel to Egypt.

Karnak Temple: largest religious temple in the ancient world

The Karnak temple is the largest religious complex ever built. Two square kilometers of pylons, courtyards, hypostyle rooms and chapels built over 2,000 years, from the Middle Kingdom (2,000 BC) to the Ptolemaic era. No visitor comes out Karnak without a five-minute silence in front of the hypostyle room: 134 columns 23 meters high, open papyrus capitals, painted engravings still visible on the southern quarter of the room. It is the most monumental Egyptian monument, in the strict sense of the word.

The classic Karnak circuit begins with the avenue of rams (ram-headed creatures of Amun), crosses the first unfinished pylon, emerges into the large courtyard with the Taharqa kiosk, then enters the hypostyle hall of Amenhotep III and Seti I. Followed by the sanctuary of Amun-Re, the sacred lake, the obelisks of Hatshepsut and Thutmose I, the hiding place of the statues. Allow 2.5 to 3 hours of guided tour so as not to miss the details. Sound and light in English, three evenings a week, is a remarkable addition to the first night in Luxor.

Karnak entry in 2026: 600 EGP (around 11 EUR). Open 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in winter, 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in summer. We always send our English-speaking clients to Karnak early in the morning (6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.) to avoid the cruise buses which arrive after 10 a.m. Our English-speaking Egyptologist guide knows the courtyard of the hiding place, the Greek and Phoenician graffiti, and the white chapel of Sesostris I, three sites that 90% of visitors miss due to lack of a guide.

Luxor Temple: cornice, avenue of the sphinxes, Amon-Re

The Luxor temple is the sister temple of Karnak, built in the 14th century BC by Amenhotep III then enlarged by Ramesses II. It is located in the heart of the modern city, on the Nile Corniche, less than 10 minutes walk from the train station and major hotels. Its facade: a pylon flanked by two obelisks (one remains, the other has been at the Place de la Concorde in Paris since 1836), two seated colossi of Ramses II, a peristyle courtyard, the processional colonnade of Amenhotep III (14 columns of 19 meters), the sanctuary of Amun-Re.

The temple is open until 10 p.m., it is the only temple in Egypt illuminated at night. We always recommend to our English-speaking clients to visit the Luxor temple in two stages: a first approach at the end of the afternoon when the sun skims the reliefs, a second visit around 8:30 p.m. for the night illumination. It is an experience that marks as much as Karnak.

The Avenue of Sphinxes which connects Karnak to the Luxor Temple over 2.7 kilometers was inaugurated in November 2021 after thirty years of excavations. You can walk it on foot (1 hour walk) in the morning before 9am, or cross it by carriage. More than 1,050 sphinxes with ram's heads, then human heads, lined up on either side. This is one of the highlights of our program visit Luxor tailor-made.

Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens: tombs not to be missed

The Valley of the Kings is the necropolis of the pharaohs of the New Kingdom (1550 to 1070 BC). Sixty-three tombs have been discovered to date, including that of Tutankhamun (KV62) unearthed by Howard Carter in 1922. We do not visit the valley of the kings entire in one day: the standard ticket (750 EGP) gives access to 3 tombs out of 9 open at the end of the visit. Our advice: start with KV11 (Ramses III, 125 meters of painted galleries), KV9 (Ramses V and VI, spectacular astronomical ceilings), and KV2 (Ramses IV, remarkably preserved royal blue colors). The tomb of Tutankhamun is extra (700 EGP), small but symbolic.

The Valley of the Queens, 2 kilometers to the south, is home to 91 tombs of queens, princesses and princes. The absolute star: QV66, the tomb of Nefertari, wife of Ramesses II. Colors and reliefs among the best preserved from the New Kingdom. The Nefertari ticket is 2,500 EGP (around 44 EUR) and strictly limited to 200 visitors per day, 10 minutes per visit. Our clients who request a high-end Luxor stay systematically book Nefertari in advance through our agency.

Practical: the Valley of the Kings is 45 minutes from Luxor by road via the Luxor Bridge, or 15 minutes by ferry + taxi. Temperature inside the tombs in summer: 45-55°C, hence the importance of the 6 a.m.-10 a.m. window in June-August. Photos prohibited in all tombs except with photo permit at 300 EGP. OUR what to do in Luxor standard dedicates a whole day to the West Bank: Valley of the Kings + Valley of the Queens + Hatshepsut + Colossi + Medinat Habu + traditional lunch in Gourna.

Temple of Hatshepsut, Medinat Habu and Colossi of Memnon

The temple of Hatshepsut in Deir el-Bahari is the most photographed monument on the West Bank. Three superimposed terraces leaning against the cliff, connected by ramps, at the foot of a cirque of orange limestone rock. Hatshepsut, fifth pharaoh of the 18th dynasty and one of the rare women to have reigned as king, had the commercial expedition to the country of Punt (Somalia) and the divine story of her birth engraved there. The Chapel of Anubis and the Chapel of Hathor on the middle terrace are the two rooms not to be missed.

Medinat Habu, 3 kilometers south of Hatshepsut, is the funerary temple of Ramses III. Less visited than the Valley of the Kings and therefore calmer, it is home to the best battle scenes in all of ancient Egypt: the naval battle against the Sea Peoples, the Libyan campaigns, the counting ceremony of severed hands. The reliefs are still three-quarters painted. This is our favorite thing to do between the Valley of the Kings and lunch.

The Colossi of Memnon, two 18 meter high seated statues representing Amenhotep III, mark the entrance to the Theban necropolis from the modern road. The Greeks called them Memnon because of the song of the northern colossus at dawn, caused by the thermal expansion of the cracked stone after the earthquake of 27 BC. A 15-minute photo stop is enough, except for ancient history buffs who can read the Greek and Latin graffiti etched on the legs.

Luxor hot air balloon at sunrise: practical guide 2026

The Luxor hot air balloon is the experience most requested by our English-speaking customers after the temples. Takeoff 30 minutes before sunrise from the West Bank, flight 45 to 60 minutes over the Temple of Hatshepsut, the Valley of the Kings, Medinat Habu, the Colossi of Memnon and the Nile at daybreak. Twelve to twenty people per basket depending on the operator.

Price 2026: from 100 to 180 USD per person depending on the season and the operator. The cheapest (100-120 USD) are often overbooked with 20 people per pod and sloppy safety briefings. We work with two certified English-speaking operators (Sindbad and Magic Horizon) at 140-160 USD, ceiling 16 people, safety briefing in English, cancellation refunded in case of wind. The price includes hotel-pontoon-hotel transfer, hearty breakfast after landing, flight certificate.

Practical points: wake up around 4-4:30 a.m. in winter, 3:30 a.m. in summer (landing must be completed before the thermal wind rises around 7:30 a.m.). Bring a jacket: 10°C at 1,000 meters altitude even in July. Flights are canceled in winds greater than 10 km/h, there is a 1 in 5 chance of cancellation in winter, 1 in 15 in May-September. We systematically reschedule our customers the next day at no extra cost. The Luxor hot air balloon Ideally book 3 days in advance with our agency.

Luxor Aswan cruise: durations, boats, prices, from Luxor

The Luxor Aswan cruise is the star format of ancient Egypt. It connects Luxor to Aswan in 4 or 5 nights south, or 7 nights round trip. Standard stops: Luxor (Karnak, Luxor temple), Esna (lock), Edfu (temple of Horus), Kom Ombo (double temple of Sobek and Haroeris), Philae (temple of Isis in Aswan). This is the only format that allows you to visit Upper Egypt without a road and without changing rooms every night. Our comprehensive Nile cruise hub details all the options.

Three categories of boats on this line: 4 and 5 star liners (80 to 150 cabins, swimming pools on deck, international buffets, prices from 1,000 EUR per person for 4 nights all inclusive), modern dahabiyas (6 to 10 cabins, sailing, refined atmosphere, 2,200 to 3,500 EUR), and sandals or small boats that can be privatized (4 to 6 cabins, only on request, 4,000 EUR and more). The cruise can be full board, half board or breakfast only for those who prefer the stopover restaurants.

Practical: departure from Luxor is from the pier of the Hotel Pavillon Winter, a 10-minute walk from the Luxor temple. Check-in at 12 p.m., lunch at 1 p.m., departure at 4 p.m. or the next morning depending on direction. English-speaking customers who request a Luxor Aswan cruise of 4 nights arrive in Luxor by night train from Cairo (9 hours journey, air-conditioned cabin) or by EgyptAir domestic flight (1h15). The Aswan-Cairo return is by flight only (1h25).

How many days in Luxor: 2, 3, 5 or 7 days

The question "how many days in luxor" comes to the top of our WhatsApp requests. Our response varies depending on the profile of the English-speaking traveler.

Two days in Luxor : the minimum if the traveler then follows a cruise to Aswan. Day 1 East bank (Karnak in the morning, Luxor temple at the end of the day, sound and light in the evening). Day 2 West bank (Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut, Medinat Habu, colossi). Optional hot air balloon on day 2 or 3. This format is calibrated for travelers who do Cairo + Luxor + cruise + Aswan over 8 to 10 nights.

Three days in Luxor : the right format for a first discovery without a cruise. Day 1 East bank, day 2 West bank, day 3 hot air balloon at sunrise + illuminated Luxor temple + end of stay evening. This format is popular with couples who prefer to stay based in Luxor rather than changing boats every night.

Five days in Luxor : format for Egyptology enthusiasts. Adds the Valley of the Queens with Nefertari, the tombs of the nobles (Rekhmirê, Sennefer), the Ramesseum of Ramesses II, the oasis of Dendera 65 kilometers to the north (goddess Hathor), the oasis of Abydos 170 kilometers to the north (cult of Osiris and table of Seti I). Our customers who book 5 days in Luxor are almost all university students or repeat customers on their second or third visit.

Seven days in Luxor : reserved for researchers and very serious enthusiasts, with possible access to the quarries of Aswan, the western desert via the El-Kharga road, and a long stay in a private dahabiya. Very rare format, a small share of our requests.

Where to sleep in Luxor: East bank versus West bank

The choice of hotel in Luxor comes down to a debate: East bank (modern city, close to the Luxor temple and the train station) or West bank (rural, close to the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut, view of the desert mountains).

East Bank, our English-speaking addresses tested: Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor (historic palace 1886, 95 rooms, Nile gardens, 200 meters from the Luxor temple, from 280 EUR per night), Hilton Luxor Resort (swimming pool, spa, 15 minutes from the temples, 150 EUR), Steigenberger Resort Achti (500 rooms on the corniche, 120 EUR). Ideal for travelers continuing on a cruise: the pier is a 10-minute walk away.

West Bank, our favorite addresses: Hotel Al Moudira (28 suites in an old-fashioned riad, private swimming pools, 320 EUR per night, the most envied hotel in Egypt by high-end English-speaking clients), Djorff Palace (boutique hotel, 75 EUR), Nour el Gourna (charming pension run by a English-speaking family, 50 EUR). Quieter, more rural, perfect for couples who want to slow down. The only drawback: 45 minutes to go to dinner on the corniche on the east bank.

Our standard recommendation for a Luxor stay of 3 nights: 2 nights East bank (access to temples + dinners + cruise pier), 1 night West bank (desert atmosphere + breakfast with a view of the cliffs). Our agency reserves everything and organizes the shore-to-shore transfer with driver.

Train Luxor Cairo, domestic flight and transfers

Luxor is connected to Cairo by three means: night train (recommended for the experience), domestic flight (recommended to save time), private car (not recommended).

The train Luxor Cairo Watania Sleeping Train (Abela) departs from Luxor around 9:45 p.m. and arrives in Cairo Ramses at 6-7 a.m. the next morning. Nine to ten hours journey, air-conditioned double cabin with sink, dinner served in the cabin, breakfast upon waking. 2026 price: 100 to 130 USD per person in double cabin, 150 USD in single cabin. Very comfortable and very popular with our English-speaking customers who love the atmosphere of Egyptian rail travel. Reservation required 2 weeks in advance via our agency.

The EgyptAir Luxor-Cairo domestic flight lasts 1 hour 15 minutes and costs 80 to 150 EUR depending on the season. Three to five departures per day. Faster, less colorful than the train, but convenient for travelers arriving directly in Luxor by international charter or via Hurghada. Our agency includes reservation and meet-and-greet at Luxor Airport (LXR), which is 6 kilometers east of the city.

We do not recommend the Luxor-Cairo route (700 kilometers, 10 to 12 hours of travel, crossing the Arabian desert). It is used only for specialized tours passing through Abydos and Dendera, with police escort.

Internal transfers in Luxor: taxi per trip 50 to 120 EGP, private driver per half day 400 to 600 EGP, private driver per day 800 to 1,200 EGP. The carriages are picturesque but should be avoided for long journeys. Our agency always includes a verified French or English speaking driver in Luxor packages. Our Cairo airport guide also details Luxor-Cairo connections.

Luxor Budget 2026: EGP, EUR, without guide or with guide

English-speaking traveler budget in 2026, excluding your flight to Egypt:

Fixed expense items: Karnak entrance 600 EGP, Luxor temple 500 EGP, Valley of the Kings 750 EGP (3 standard tombs), Tutankhamun surcharge 700 EGP, Nefertari 2,500 EGP, Hatshepsut 440 EGP, Medinat Habu 220 EGP, hot air balloon 140-160 USD. For a full day on the West Bank without Nefertari and without a hot air balloon, count 2,100 EGP for entries, or around 37 EUR. Our agency applies the same official rates without any increase.

Want to visit Luxor without stress? Our English-speaking agency builds your turnkey Luxor tour: East bank or West bank hotel, private English-speaking Egyptologist guide, driver, Karnak, Luxor temple, Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut, Medinat Habu, hot air balloon, and Luxor-Aswan cruise connection if desired. Request your quote on WhatsApp within 24 hours at +20 10 96569859. Advice in English, transparent prices.

Security Luxor 2026: single woman, family, scams to avoid

Security in Luxor in 2026 is very tight. Since the 1997 attack, Egypt has built a specific tourist system around Luxor: uniformed tourist police at each temple entrance, checkpoints on the roads of the Valley of the Kings, military presence on bridges and desert roads. English-speaking travelers have not reported a security incident for at least ten years in Luxor.

A English-speaking woman traveling alone in Luxor can move around without difficulty during the day, temples, markets, corniche, restaurants. In the evening, we recommend staying in the tourist areas on the East Bank (corniche and streets adjacent to the Sofitel and the Hilton). Correct attire outside temples: covered shoulders and knees are appreciated out of local respect without being obligatory. Our agency always provides a verified driver for night trips.

Family travelers have no problem in Luxor. Children are very well received, often invited to tea by local families, fascinated by the reliefs and hot air balloons. We recommend hats, factor 50 sunscreen and plenty of water. For families with young children, the West bank is quieter and less noisy than the East bank.

Scams to be aware of in Luxor in 2026: the fake guide at the entrance to the temples who offers a visit for 10 USD then asks for 50 USD at the exit (refuse firmly, all our guides are licensed), the horse-drawn carriage tout who promises a tour for 20 EGP then asks for 200 EGP (fix the price in writing before getting in), the souvenir seller at the Karnak temple who slips an object into the child's bag then demands payment (do not take anything in hand without an announced price). All these scams are avoidable with a English-speaking guide from our agency.

What is the difference between the Karnak temple and the Luxor temple?

Karnak is the main religious complex of Amun-Re, built over 2,000 years, with 134 columns in the hypostyle hall, 2 km² of monuments. The Luxor Temple is its sister temple dedicated to the royal god, smaller, in the heart of the modern city, open until 10 p.m. (night illumination). The two are connected by the 2.7 kilometer Avenue of Sphinxes reopened in 2021. A consistent Luxor trip visits both on the same day.

The flight is recommended for travelers in a hurry or on tight schedules. Our agency reserves one or the other according to your preference.

Is it safe to visit Luxor in 2026?

Yes. Luxor has been one of the most secure tourist cities in Egypt for 15 years, with a tourist police force dedicated to each temple, checkpoints on the roads of the Valley of the Kings, and military presence at the bridges. English-speaking travelers do not report security incidents. Single women and families travel without difficulty. The only risks: scams from touts and false guides, avoidable with agency support.

Where to sleep in Luxor for a first English-speaking stay?

For a first stay of 3 nights: 2 nights East bank (Sofitel Winter Palace historic palace, Hilton Luxor Resort or Steigenberger Achti on the Corniche), 1 night West bank (Hotel Al Moudira, Djorff Palace or Nour el Gourna). The east bank puts the traveler 10 minutes from the temples and the pier. The West bank offers the desert atmosphere and silence. Our agency books both and organizes the transfer.

Are the Colossi of Memnon worth a full visit?

A 15-minute photo stop is enough for 95% of visitors. The two 18 meter statues of Amenhotep III mark the entrance to the Theban necropolis but the site is very degraded. Ancient history buffs can spend 45 minutes reading the Greek and Latin graffiti engraved on the legs after the song of the northern colossus described by Greco-Roman authors. Still integrated into our West Bank program.

Can I combine Luxor and Hurghada in the same trip?

Yes, very common among our English-speaking customers. Hurghada-Louxor route: 4.5 hours by private bus or minivan, police escort on certain portions. Or flight via Cairo with stopover (more expensive but more comfortable). The ideal combo: 3 nights Luxor (temples + hot air balloon) + 4 nights Hurghada (beaches, Red Sea diving, day trip). Our Hurghada destination page details the Red Sea options.

How to book a English-speaking Egyptologist guide in Luxor?

Through our agency directly. All our guides are graduates of the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism, licensed, and native French speakers or bilingual. We strictly avoid the touts at the entrance to the temples who offer unofficial tours for 10 USD. A private English-speaking Egyptologist guide in Luxor costs 80-100 EUR per day per group (not per person). It is included in our 3 to 7 nights packages in Luxor.

Is there a direct international airport to Luxor from the USA?

No. There is no regular direct Paris-Louxor flight in 2026. Access is via Cairo (direct flight Paris-Cairo 4 hours with Air France, EgyptAir, Transavia) then EgyptAir domestic flight Cairo-Louxor 1 hour 15 minutes, or night train 9-10 hours. Some seasonal Paris-Louxor charters exist in November-March via tour operators but with little flexibility. Our agency assembles all segments into a single quote.
