Our hand-picked selection of the best 5-star Premium ships and private dahabiyas on the Nile: Sonesta Star Goddess, Oberoi Philae, Steigenberger Legacy, Movenpick Royal Lily, Dahabeya Nuun & Nuut. Booked direct from Cairo.
Out of the 280+ ships sailing the Nile, barely thirty truly deserve the 5-star Premium label. The term "5 stars" on the Nile is inflated - plenty of ships display it with tired cabins, average food and indifferent service. A genuine selection comes down to strict criteria you will not see on the tour operators' websites: a recent renovation (less than 5 years old), a human scale (60-130 cabins max), the quality of the chef and the kitchen brigade, English-speaking training for the reception staff, and how often technical inspections happen.
Our SEV team in Cairo personally inspects every partner ship at least once a season - we board, we dine in the restaurant, we test the balcony cabins, we check the state of the carpets and the cleanliness of the spas. It is this on-the-ground inspection that lets us guarantee our 5-star Premium picks, not a line in a marketing brochure.
This page presents our 2026 selection of the 5 best classic 5-star ships + 3 high-end private dahabiyas + 1 ultra-luxury yacht-cruiser. Plus an honest comparison between a Premium ship (60-130 cabins) and a private dahabiya (4-12 cabins).
Our #1 value-for-money pick. Spacious balcony cabins (28 sq m), a fine-dining restaurant led by a chef trained in France, a pool deck, an art deco lounge-bar, and an exemplary English-speaking crew. A human scale (33 cabins vs. 130 on the giant liners). A 4-night Luxor-Aswan itinerary or 3 nights Aswan-Luxor. Average 2026 mid-season rate: $1,390-$1,820 per person for 4 nights in a balcony cabin.
The benchmark of the Movenpick fleet on the Nile. Elegant cabins with contemporary decor, a Swiss-themed restaurant, a Movenpick patisserie (the famous ice cream is included). Excellent wheelchair accessibility. An English-language activity program. Ideal for American travelers on a first trip. Average rate: $1,490-$1,930 per person
The favorite ship of travelers who want 5-star intimacy without the dahabiya. Only 22 cabins, suites with a private balcony and jacuzzi, a fine-dining restaurant (with Yannick Alleno as consulting chef), and a 200 sq m Oberoi spa. For couples, honeymoons and small groups of friends. Rate: $2,490-$3,550 per person for 4 nights.
The largest 5-star Premium ship in our selection. Classic architecture inspired by the Victorian Nile steamers, 4 a-la-carte restaurants, a raised pool with panoramic views, a 600 sq m spa, and a fitness room. English-language entertainment every evening (galabeya party, Sufi dancing, oriental night). Ideal for families and groups. Rate: $1,490-$2,040 per person
The boutique ship with a Scandinavian-Egyptian style. Design cabins with a king-size bed, a single but excellent restaurant (an Egyptian chef trained in Sweden), a cocktail bar, an adults-only atmosphere (16 and over). For couples without children and design-minded travelers. Rate: $1,690-$2,250 per person
The dahabiya is the ultra-intimate alternative to the classic 5-star ship: a traditional sailboat with lateen sails, 4 to 12 cabins maximum, sailing at the pace of the wind, with off-the-beaten-path stops where the big liners never moor. It is the format honeymooners and small groups of friends prefer, often booking the whole vessel for themselves.
Our longstanding partner dahabiya. 8 double cabins with marble bathrooms, a library lounge, a restaurant-terrace under a fine-wood roof, and 2 lateen sails. Near-private service (1 crew member for every 1.5 passengers). A 6-night Esna-Aswan itinerary with stops at El Kab, Gebel Silsila and Dakka. Rate: $3,020-$4,100 per person for 6 nights - full private charter $19,400-$25,900 per group.
A shorter format but just as refined. 6 cabins, a full-board restaurant, and a Nubian crew that sings at sunset each evening. A Luxor-Aswan itinerary over 5 nights. Rate: $2,490-$3,350 per person
A premium combo: 3 nights in Cairo (Pyramids + Grand Egyptian Museum) + 6 nights on a private dahabiya. Rate: $3,400 per person. The favorite format of our honeymooners and our guests booking for their 60th and beyond.

The high season on 5-star Premium ships is more concentrated than on standard ships: October-November, December (Christmas), February, March and April (Easter). Outside those windows, the Premium ships run with reduced staffing and some less-requested itineraries are occasionally cancelled.
For the best value on 5-star Premium: late September, early February (after the holidays) or mid-May. Rates drop by 20-25% and the crowds at the temples stay reasonable.
