Updated: April 2026 - English-speaking agency based in Cairo since 2012
Cairo, capital of Egypt and largest city in Africa, concentrates within a radius of 30 kilometers three of the most visited sites in the world: the pyramids of Giza, the Grand Egyptian Museum opening at the end of 2025, and the souk of Khan el Khalili. For a English-speaking traveler arriving at Cairo international airport, the question is no longer whether to come: it is how to spend three days, five days or seven days in this megacity of 22 million inhabitants without getting exhausted and without missing out on the real wonders. Cairo, or Cairo in English, cannot be visited like Rome or Istanbul. We attack it with a tight plan, a trusted driver and a English-speaking guide who knows when to leave at 6 a.m. and when to sleep until 10 a.m.
This guide covers everything a French, Belgian or Swiss traveler needs to know before booking: cairo weather month by month with actual temperatures, neighborhoods to stay in according to your profile, ideal duration on each site, price of airport, train or plane transfers to go on to Luxor, actual budget in 2026, and up-to-date security. Our team based in Cairo since 2012 has been setting up these English-speaking routes every day. This is what we tell our clients before they book a date.
Cairo, capital of Egypt since the Fatimid foundation of 969, is today a megacity of more than 22 million inhabitants. Say "egypt capital" or "capital of egypt" is talking about the same city: the one which concentrates the political, economic and cultural power of the country, but also 90% of the Pharaonic heritage accessible to the traveler in a single base. When we write egypt capital without an accent in Google, we search for the same thing: where to stay, what to see, how to organize ourselves.
The three English-speaking traveler profiles who get the best out of Cairo:
What Cairo doesn't do well: seaside rest (go to Hurghada or Marsa Alam), desert nature (Fayoum or Siwa), atmosphere of a quiet hieroglyphic small town (this is Luxor). Cairo is big, noisy, overcrowded, and this is precisely what makes it one of the most lively capitals in the Mediterranean world.
For a first trip to Egypt, Cairo is obligatory: this is where the visit to the pyramids, the Sphinx and the Grand Museum takes place. For a second trip, some clients sometimes prefer to skip Cairo and board directly in Luxor for a Nile cruise dahabiya. Our quotes calculate both formulas on WhatsApp within 24 hours.
The cairo weather is the most worked request for planning a trip to Egypt. The continental desert climate tempered by the proximity of the Nile means that temperatures vary greatly between day and night and between seasons. The figures below come from the weather station at Cairo International Airport on the average for the last ten years.
Our standard recommendation when a English-speaking customer writes to us for a first trip: October, November, February, March. We avoid July-August for families with children and December if budget is tight (Christmas prices). The cairo weather in winter allows visits all day; the summer weather forces us to divide morning-nap-evening.
To complete the general Egyptian climate: see our guide to the best time to go to Egypt and our Egypt travel guide in summer for July-August.
The pyramids of Giza and the egypt sphynx are the site that nearly all of our customers ask for. Built between 2,600 and 2,500 BC, the three great pyramids of Cheops, Chephren and Mykerinos form with the Sphinx the universal postcard of Egypt. Contrary to popular belief, they are not "in the middle of the desert": the Giza plateau is literally on the western edge of the Cairo metropolitan area, accessible in 30 to 50 minutes from most hotels.
The 2026 combo ticket for the Giza Plateau costs 700 EGP (approximately 12 EUR) and includes entry to the plateau, the Great Pyramid of Cheops exterior view, Khafre, Mykerinos and the Sphinx. Count on an additional 900 EGP (17 EUR) to enter the burial chamber of Khufu, interesting if you have never visited an interior pyramid, unnecessary if you also do Saqqara.
The egypt sphynx (sometimes spelled Sphinx) is less impressive in photos than in real life: 73 meters long, 20 meters high, eroded face but striking presence. The best angles are taken from the lower temple terrace, not from the elevated tourist platform. Our English-speaking guide knows exactly where to stand to avoid group buses spoiling the photo.
Ideal time for pyramids : arrival at 7:45 a.m. (opening 8 a.m.), Khufu 8 a.m., panorama of the nine pyramids 9:30 a.m., Sphinx 10:30 a.m., exit before 12 p.m. when the cruise buses arrive. Some evenings, the sound and light show (180 EGP, 3.50 EUR) is worth the detour in English.
To go further: our practical guide to the pyramids of Giza and our Dahshur guide and red pyramid for travelers who want to go beyond Giza.
The great egyptian museum, also called new cairo museum (GEM, Grand Egyptian Museum), opened its doors to the public in November 2025 after 20 years of construction. Located 2 km from the pyramids of Giza, it replaces the old Cairo Museum in Tahrir Square whose collections were transferred. For a English-speaking traveler in 2026, it is the number one cultural site in the country, even ahead of the pyramids for certain profiles.
What we see there: the complete collection of Tutankhamun brought together for the first time (around 5,400 objects, never presented together before), the large gallery of hieroglyphs, the large monumental staircase with colossal statues over 60 meters, the dynastic rooms classified chronologically. The building designed by the Irish firm Heneghan Peng architects is itself spectacular.
Entrance fee 2026: 1,450 EGP for foreign adults (approximately 25 EUR), 730 EGP for children 6-12 years old. The Tutankhamun Room is included in the ticket, at no extra charge. Recommended visit duration: 4 hours minimum, 6 hours for enthusiasts. The cafeteria is OK but bring a snack if you visit morning + afternoon.
Our logistics recommendation: new cairo museum combines perfectly with the Pyramids of Giza in an 8am-5pm day, since it is 5 minutes by car. Much less sense to place it after Khan el Khalili (50 minutes crossing from Cairo). The cairo museum old Tahrir Square remains partially open with a reduced collection, dispensable except for lovers of museum architecture from the 1900s.
For the complete history: our guide to the Grand Egyptian Museum covers internal itinerary, priority rooms, comparison with the old museum and pricing details.

If the Pyramids of Giza are the postcard, memphis egypt and Saqqara (sometimes written Sakkara) are the roots. Memphis was the first capital of unified Egypt around 3150 BC, 25 km south of modern Cairo. Saqqara, the royal necropolis of Memphis, 7 km long, is home to the step pyramid of Djoser built around 2,630 BC: the very first pyramid in the world, 80 years before Khufu.
What we see there:
The typical day combines Memphis + Saqqara + Dahshur (red pyramid and rhomboidal pyramid of Snefrou, father of Khufu). Departure 8 a.m. from the hotel, return 4 p.m., local roadside lunch. Price with English-speaking guide and private van: 75 to 110 EUR per person depending on season. Our Memphis and Saqqara guide details each site.
Khan el Khalili is the great medieval souk of Cairo, founded in 1382 by Emir Khalili. Contrary to what people say, it is not a total tourist trap: 60% of customers are from Cairo, and the artisanal quality in certain copper, blown glass, Egyptian cotton and perfume workshops is serious. You have to go there with a clear head and a English-speaking guide to navigate the good shops without being followed by touts.
In the same area of 30 minutes on foot: the Al-Azhar mosque (founded in 970), one of the oldest universities in the Arab-Muslim world still in operation. The mosque of Sultan Hassan (1356-1363), a Mamluk architectural masterpiece of dizzying proportions. The Ibn Tulun Mosque (879), the oldest intact mosque in Egypt with its spiral minaret. The al-Muayyad mosque. The Saladin Citadel (12th century) and the Ottoman Mehemet Ali Mosque.
The standard Islamic Cairo itinerary: departure 9 a.m., Khan el Khalili 9:30 a.m.-11 a.m., Al-Azhar mosque 11 a.m.-12 p.m., lunch Naguib Mahfouz café (in the souk) 12 p.m.-1:30 p.m., Sultan Hassan mosque 2 p.m.-3 p.m., Ibn Tulun mosque 3:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m., return to hotel 5:30 p.m. Correct attire required in mosques (shoulders and knees covered, headscarf for women). For details of the mosques, see our guide to Al-Azhar Mosque and Islamic Quarter and our guide to the Khan el Khalili spice market.
Coptic Cairo, also called Old Cairo, is the birthplace of Egyptian Christianity and is home to a unique concentration of 4th-10th century churches, a 9th century synagogue, and a world-class Coptic museum. Geographically it is the Babylon district of Egypt, 15 minutes by metro from the center (line 1, Mar Girgis station).
The five major sites of the district, in the recommended order of visit:
Total duration 3 to 4 hours. Entrance to churches free, entrance to the Coptic museum 280 EGP (5 EUR). Our English-speaking guests often appreciate this neighborhood more than Khan el Khalili for its tranquility and historical intensity. See our guide to the Coptic quarter of Cairo.
Cairo covers 3,000 km² and choosing your hotel area changes the entire experience. 5-star hotels are concentrated in three areas, 4-star hotels in four, charming boutique hotels are rare but existing.
Our standard English-speaking recommendation for a first trip: Zamalek or Garden City for balance, Giza for the postcard, Heliopolis only if late flight. Our quotes include 3 hotel options depending on budget and profile, with recent photos taken by our guides. For full details: Cairo guide in 3 days and Cairo at night: what to do in the evening.
Cairo with children aged 5 to 14 works well if you cut it intelligently. The heat, noise and human density can tire little ones over long days. Our English-speaking clients with children generally leave for 4 nights in Cairo + 3 nights in Hurghada or Nile cruise to balance culture and relaxation.

Connecting Cairo to Luxor is the number one logistical question of any combined holiday. Three options exist: plane, train, bus. The train cairo luxor is historically the romantic choice, and remains perfectly functional in 2026.
Our recommendation by profile: domestic flight for medium and high budget (maximum time saving), Watania train for romance and saving of a night in a hotel, VIP day train for tight budget without fatigue constraints. Train reservation required 2 to 4 weeks in advance in high season. We take care of all ticketing in our turnkey quotes - all your domestic flights within Egypt are arranged and included by SEV.

Theegypt airport The main airport is Cairo International Airport (IATA code: CAI), located in Heliopolis, 22 km from the city center. Three terminals are in service in 2026: T1 (domestic flights and former regional flights), T2 (long-haul Europe and Asia flights, renovated 2022), T3 (EgyptAir Star Alliance hub). Air France, Transavia, ITA Airways, Lufthansa, KLM generally land in T2. EgyptAir lands in T3.
Distances from CAI in 2026 (journey without traffic jams, which exist after 5 p.m. on weekdays):
Our English-speaking airport transfers: air-conditioned van 6-8 seats, driver with name sign, waiting included 90 minutes from landing. Price 2026: 25 EUR for 1-3 people to Zamalek or center, 35 EUR to Giza, 50 EUR return same day for short flight. For full details: Cairo airport arrival and transfer guide.

Cairo remains one of the cheapest capitals in the Mediterranean world in 2026, despite inflation in recent years. The Egyptian pound has stabilized around 50 EGP for 1 EUR. Here are the actual budget ranges we see on our quotes, excluding your flight to Egypt.
Basis 7 nights, two adults, excluding your flight to Egypt (all domestic flights within Egypt included by SEV), breakfast included, private English-speaking guide included:
The main budget inflator is hotel choice. The price of sites, local restaurants and transport remains affordable: lunch in a popular tavern 5 to 10 EUR, gourmet menu on Nil 40 to 80 EUR, taxi 15 minutes 2 to 4 EUR. For managing exchange, tipping and change: guide to tipping in Egypt and currency and exchange guide in Egypt.
Security in Cairo has improved significantly since 2015. In 2026, tourist areas (Giza, Zamalek, Garden City, Heliopolis, Main Islamic Cairo, Coptic Cairo) are under permanent police surveillance. The last serious terrorist incidents date back to 2017. The daily risks for a English-speaking traveler are essentially: soft fraud (taxi that does not meter, seller who tempts tourist prices), jostling in the souks, atmospheric pollution on certain days.
Practical rules to follow:
For a solo female trip, Cairo is more trying than Hurghada in terms of insistent stares and requests, but it is not dangerous. Our solo female travel guide in Egypt details the neighborhoods, clothing, social codes. For updated general security: security guide Egypt 2026.
Itineraries that we sell that work for a English-speaking traveler arriving in CAI in the late afternoon or evening.

The 14 questions we receive most often on WhatsApp regarding Cairo, the Egyptian capital and the practical organization of the stay. If yours is not listed, write to us.
October-November and February-March are the best periods. Cairo weather in October: 29°C day, 18°C night, golden light, low crowds. February: 21°C day, 10°C night, ideal for intensive visits. Avoid July-August (heatwave 35-36°C) and December high season (Christmas prices).
Minimum 3 full days to cover pyramids, Grand Museum and Khan el Khalili. 5 days to add Memphis-Saqqara and delve deeper into Islamic and Coptic Cairo. 7 days to include Alexandria. Our clients most often opt for 4 nights Cairo + 4 nights Nile cruise.
Cairo (Al-Qahira in Arabic) is the capital of egypt since the Fatimid foundation of 969. We sometimes see written egypt capital without accent or egypt capital without article: it's the same city. With its 22 million inhabitants, it is the largest city in Africa and the Arab world.
Yes, the great egyptian museum (GEM or new cairo museum) opened its doors to the public in November 2025 next to the pyramids of Giza. It concentrates the complete Tutankhamun collection and replaces the old cairo museum from Tahrir Square. Plan for a minimum visit of 4 hours, 1,450 EGP (25 EUR) for adult entry 2026.
Yes technically, but strongly discouraged. The pyramids of Giza without a English-speaking guide exposes you to camel touts (100 EUR instead of 5 EUR), pushy photographers, and bad photo angles. Our guide largely saves you its cost on the camel scam alone.
The train cairo luxor Watania night costs 130 EUR per person in a double cabin with dinner, 150 EUR in an individual cabin. The daytime VIP train costs 35 EUR. The plane 80 to 140 EUR depending on anticipation. Our English-speaking customers most often take the plane to save time or the Watania for the experience.
Theegypt airport Main (CAI) is 22 km from Tahrir and 35 km from the Pyramids of Giza. Allow 45 minutes to Zamalek outside peak hours, up to 1h30 on weekday evenings. Our English-speaking transfers: 25-35 EUR depending on destination.
Yes, for tourist areas (Giza, Zamalek, center, Islamic and Coptic Cairo, Heliopolis) which are under permanent police surveillance. The last serious incidents date back to 2017. Soft scams frequent but no real physical danger. Use Uber rather than classic taxi.
Zamalek for a balanced cultural traveler, Giza for waking up to the pyramids, Garden City for proximity to the Nile and the center. Avoid the popular city center for a first trip. Our quotes offer 3 hotels per budget range with recent photos taken by our guides.
This is our best-selling itinerary. 4 nights Cairo + 4 nights Nile cruise Luxor-Aswan + domestic Luxor-Cairo return flight (arranged and included by SEV) = 9 days door to door. Allow 1,800 to 3,000 EUR per person excluding your flight to Egypt, depending on boat category.
Yes. Memphis Egypt and Saqqara (sometimes Sakkara) are home to the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the world's first pyramid, and noble tombs with exceptional paintings. Standard program: Memphis-Saqqara-Dahshur in 8 hours from Cairo, 75-110 EUR per person with English-speaking guide.
The cairo museum old Tahrir Square (1902) was largely emptied in 2025: Tutankhamun collection, royal treasures and major pieces transferred to the Grand Egyptian Museum of Giza. It remains open with a reduced collection, interesting for neoclassical architecture. The GEM is the preferred site in 2026.
Yes with intelligent division: pyramids morning, hotel rest nap, Khan Khalili late afternoon. Avoid full day Memphis-Saqqara-Dahshur (too long for less than 10 years old). Prefer 4 nights Cairo + 3 nights Hurghada or Nile cruise for balance.
Base 2 adults 7 nights excluding your flight to Egypt (all domestic flights included by SEV): economy 1,400-1,900 EUR total, mid-range 2,200-3,000 EUR, high-end 3,600-5,000 EUR, luxury 6,400-9,000 EUR. Your flight to Egypt is booked independently. Our quotes cover everything on the ground on WhatsApp within 24 hours.
