Updated: April 2026 · English-speaking agency based in Cairo since 2012
Aswan Egypt is the southernmost city of the Egyptian Nile, 230 kilometers south of Luxor, located on a loop of the river between Nubian islands and pink granite desert. We come visit Aswan for the temple of Philae on the island of Agilkia, for the excursion to Abu Simbel 280 kilometers to the south, for the feluccas that glide at sunset around Elephantine Island, for the Sofitel Old Cataract and for the Nubian museum. Aswan, the ancient Egyptian Souenet then Greek Syène, is not a passing town: it is the southern boundary of Upper Egypt, the historic border with Nubia and the meeting point between pharaohs, Ptolemies, Greeks and Nubian cultures. A Aswan travel coherent French speaking in 2026 is sized over 2 to 4 days, ideally at the end of a Luxor-Aswan cruise, with Abu Simbel excursion included.
Aswan is universally recognized by English-speaking travelers as the most beautiful Egyptian city on the Nile. Three objective reasons explain this perception: geography (the river divides here into several branches skirting around ten granite islands populated with tropical gardens and colorful Nubian villages), climate (the driest air in the Nile basin, permanent golden light from October to April), and Nubian culture (music, gastronomy, brightly colored architecture, still alive despite the displacement of the villages during the construction of the High Dam in 1964-1971).
For a English-speaking traveler who puts together a Cairo + Luxor + Aswan tour in 2026, Aswan is systematically the last pharaonic stage before returning to Cairo. It is also the starting point of the only major pharaonic air and road excursion: Abu Simbel, the two temples of Ramses II and Nefertari saved from the waters of Lake Nasser during the UNESCO project of 1964-1968. No other city in Egypt concentrates so many world heritage sites within a radius of 300 kilometers: Philae (UNESCO 1979), Abu Simbel (UNESCO 1979), Nubia and Nubian Valley, Elephantine and Nubian Museum.
Aswan Egypt also plays a central logistical role in the circuits: it is the southern terminus of the 4-night Luxor-Aswan cruise, it is the pier for the 3 to 4-night Lake Nasser cruise to Abu Simbel, it is the terminal railway station for the Cairo-Luxor-Aswan train, and it is the ASW airport which allows you to reach Cairo in a 1h20 EgyptAir flight. Most of our English-speaking guests spend 2 to 3 nights in Aswan before flying back to Cairo.
In practice, a travel aswan egypt coherent in 2026 answers three questions: how many days aswan merit (2 minimum with Abou Simbel, 3 ideal, 4 for Nubian enthusiasts), what to see in Aswan (Philae, Abu Simbel, Elephantine, Kitchener, Nubian Museum, Felucca), and how to get there (cruise, train, flight). Our English-speaking advisors respond within 24 hours on WhatsApp at +20 10 96569859.
The climate ofAswan is hot desert, even more extreme than that of Luxor. Humidity level less than 20%, almost no precipitation (1 to 2 mm per year on average, the driest city in Egypt), exceptionally pure light. The question of weather Aswan is never that of rain but only that of temperature.
The best time Aswan runs from October to April. Daytime temperatures 24-32°C, cool nights 10-16°C, zero rain, absolutely clear skies. December and January are the coolest and most pleasant months for walking in Philae, sailing in a felucca and taking the road to Abu Simbel (3 hours one way). February and March are remarkable: mild sunshine, dry air, ideal conditions for photographing the pink granites and palm groves of Elephantine Island.
From May to September, temperatures exceed 40-45°C in the shade and reach 48-50°C in direct sun at midday. Visiting Abu Simbel becomes strenuous: 3 hours of driving with return between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., then 45 minutes of traffic between the temples. We strongly advise against May-August for families, seniors and non-acclimatized travelers. September and April are acceptable transition months at 32-36°C if the program is set before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m.
The English-speaking high season runs from mid-December to early April, aligned with Christmas, February and Easter. Superior cabins on Luxor-Aswan cruise ships and Nile-view rooms at Sofitel Old Cataract fill up 4 to 6 months in advance for these periods. Our agency receives the peak of Aswan WhatsApp requests in August-October for December-March departures.
The temple of Philae is dedicated to Isis, goddess of motherhood and magic, wife of Osiris and mother of Horus. Built under the last Ptolemies between 280 and 30 BC. BC, embellished by the Romans until 550 AD. BC, it is the last great stage of the pharaonic religion before Christianization. When Emperor Theodosius banned pagan cults in 391, Philae paradoxically remained the last active pharaonic temple in Egyptian history, officially closed only in 535 by Justinian. This exceptional continuity makes it the best preserved temple of the Ptolemaic period.
Philae was rescued from the waters spectacularly between 1972 and 1980. After the construction of the British dam in 1902, the island was submerged half the year. After the High Dam (1971), it would have been definitively submerged. UNESCO coordinated the stone-by-stone dismantling of the temple and its reconstruction on the neighboring island of Agilkia, 300 meters higher, exactly reproducing the original topography. So it's Agilkia that we're visiting today, but out of habit everyone keeps saying Philae.
Access must be by felucca or motorboat from the Shellal pier, 12 kilometers south of Aswan, behind the British dam. 10 minutes of crossing, the island appears with its first monumental pylon of 18 meters, the kiosk of Nectanébo I, the mammisi (chapel of divine birth), the temple of Hathor, and especially the central sanctuary of Isis with its perfectly preserved reliefs. Allow 2 hours for the visit, 3 with sound and light in English from 7 p.m. (three evenings per week in winter).
Philae entry in 2026: 550 EGP (approximately 9.5 EUR). Round trip felucca supplement: EGP 150-200 per person in a group, EGP 800 for a private boat. We always recommend to our English-speaking clients to visit Philae in the late afternoon (4 p.m.-6 p.m.), when the sun is low over the hills and the cruise groups have left. The following sound and light show is one of the three best in Egypt.
Abu Simbel is the signature excursion ofAswan. The two temples carved into the cliff by Ramesses II around 1265 BC. BC are the most impressive in all of ancient Egypt in terms of their scale: four seated colossi 20 meters high on the facade of the large temple of Ramses, six colossi 10 meters high at the small temple of Nefertari. The site was moved 65 meters in height between 1964 and 1968 to save it from the waters of Lake Nasser, a UNESCO project which mobilized 51 nations.
Abu Simbel Egypt is located 280 kilometers south of Aswan, 40 kilometers from the Sudanese border. Three ways to get there from Aswan.
1. Road with police convoy. Departure from Aswan at 4 a.m., 3 hours desert, arrival 7 a.m., visit 2:30 a.m., return 1:30 p.m. The escorted police convoy is obligatory for security reasons and leaves at a fixed time since 1997. Total cost with English-speaking private van: 180-250 EUR for 4 people, including entry (822 EGP) and guide. This is the standard formula for our English-speaking clients who stay 2 nights in Aswan.
2. EgyptAir flight. 45 minutes flight Aswan-Abou Simbel with 3 hours on site before leaving. 2026 price: 180-220 USD per person round trip. Comfortable but more distant from the traditional route. Recommended for travelers in a hurry or in high heat season (June-August).
3. Lake Nasser cruise. Departure from Aswan to Abu Simbel in 3 or 4 nights aboard a 4-5 star boat with stops in Wadi es-Sebua, Amada, Kalabsha. Rare format, but it is THE most photographic way to arrive at Abu Simbel, by the lake, at dawn. Price 2026: from EUR 2,200 per person for 3 nights.
2026 opening hours: 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. (summer), 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. (winter). The two solstices (February 22 and October 22) are rare dates when the sun penetrates to the sanctuary of Ramses II to illuminate the statue of the pharaoh, a solar phenomenon documented since antiquity. These two days, Abou Simbel welcomes 10,000 visitors in 2 hours, our agency then books 6 months in advance.
Entrance Abu Simbel 2026: 822 EGP (around 14 EUR). Photo permit: 300 EGP. Our English-speaking customers systematically say: “this is the strongest image of traveling to Egypt”. No passage to Aswan without Abu Simbel.

Our English-speaking agency based in Cairo builds your tailor-made Aswan stay: 2 to 4 days, private Egyptologist guide, Sofitel Old Cataract or Mövenpick Éléphantine hotel, Abu Simbel, felucca, Philae excursion, Nile cruise connection. The Aswan High Dam (Saad al-Aali) is one of the largest hydraulic dams in the world: 3.6 kilometers long, 111 meters high, 43 million cubic meters of concrete, built between 1960 and 1971 with Soviet aid. He created the Lake Nasser, 500 kilometers long, the second largest artificial lake in the world. Its role: eliminate the catastrophic floods of the Nile, provide 10% of the country's electricity, irrigate 33% of cultivated land. Its human cost: 100,000 Nubians relocated and 24 temples dismantled and moved (including Philae and Abu Simbel).
A visit to the High Dam is a must to understand modern Aswan. Viewpoint on Lake Nasser, Egyptian-Soviet Friendship Monument, UNESCO commemorative plaque. 45 minutes on site, photos from the ridge. Entrance: 120 EGP. Systematically accompanied by a English-speaking guide to provide historical and human context.
The British dam, built between 1898 and 1902, smaller (2 kilometers, 54 meters), is the first large modern dam on the Nile. Today deactivated in favor of the High Dam, it remains historically informative and offers the most beautiful view of Kitchener Island and Elephantine. 30-minute photo stop, no entry fee.
The Lake Nasser itself, beyond the dam, allows fishing for Nile perch (fish weighing 40 to 90 kilograms), photography of migratory birds (herons, hippos seen from a distance, Nile crocodiles reintroduced into deep waters), and access to saved Nubian temples (Kalabsha, Beit el-Wali, Wadi es-Sebua) by 3-4 night cruise.
TheElephantine Island is the historic heart of Aswan. Continuously occupied since the 4th millennium BC. BC, it gave its name to the ancient city of Souenet then Syène. It is home to the Aswan Museum (ruins and local discoveries), the temple of Khnum (ram god protector of the Nile flood), the nilometer (stepped structure which was used to measure the level of the river at each flood), and the colorful Nubian villages of Siou and Koti. A complete tour on foot takes 2 to 3 hours.
Access to Elephantine is only by small local ferry (5 EGP return) or by private felucca from the Aswan Corniche. 5 minutes crossing. Our English-speaking guests often have lunch at the Koti Nubian Restaurant on the banks of the Nile, which serves grilled Nubian tagine chicken and traditional ginger tea.
Kitchener's Island, officially Isle of Plants, is the botanical garden of Aswan. It was offered in 1898 to the British general Horatio Kitchener, who planted species from all over the world: Brazilian mango trees, Mexican bougainvilleas, Tunisian date palms, Madagascar hibiscus. Today, 200 species of tropical plants on 7 hectares, shaded one-hour walk, viewpoint over the Nile and Elephantine. Entrance: 60 EGP. Accessible by felucca from Éléphantine or from the corniche. Ideal between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. when the light is softest.
The Nubian Museum of Aswan (Aga Khan Mausoleum district) is the major museum of Nubian culture and history, opened in 1997 under UNESCO supervision. Collections: local pharaonic objects, Coptic art from Nubia, traditional Nubian textiles and jewelry, models of the 24 saved temples. 2 hours of visit. Entrance 400 EGP. This is the best cultural context before going to visit a real Nubian village.
The felucca aswan at sunset is the city's most iconic experience, well ahead of Abu Simbel in emotional intensity. Traditional Nile sailing boat, 8 to 12 passengers, silent sailing without engine, around Elephantine Island, Kitchener and along the British Dam. Standard duration: 1.5 to 2 hours, departure at 4:30 to 5 p.m. in winter, 6 p.m. in summer, return at nightfall.
Price 2026: 200-400 EGP per person in a group (count 4-8 USD), 1,200-2,000 EGP for a privatized felucca (25-40 USD). Our agency works with three Nubian family owners who have been on the water for three generations: Hassan (brand 'Black Bird'), Ibrahim and Mohamed. They know the winds, the currents and the best viewpoints. Ginger or karkade tea served on board.
To extend the experience, a Nubian dinner in a Nubian village from the west bank (Gharb Sehel) is the perfect evening. Arrival by felucca around 6 p.m., dinner of chicken tagine or stuffed pigeon in a family house with blue and red walls, traditional music, tea. Price 2026: 30-50 EUR per person including felucca and dinner. We coordinate with four English-speaking Nubian families, all in Gharb Sehel.
The colorful Nubian villages of Gharb Sehel and Nasaya are direct witnesses of the displaced Nubian culture in 1964-1971. Houses with facades painted with traditional scenes, domed roofs, open kitchens, looms visible from the street. Nubian families happily welcome visitors for tea at 15-20 EGP per person. It's important to ask before you shoot: the Nubian rule is invitation, not tacit permission.
Theunfinished obelisk of the Aswan quarries is one of the most telling archaeological curiosities in Egypt. Commissioned by Hatshepsut in the 15th century BC. BC, it would have measured 42 meters high and weighed 1,200 tonnes, the largest obelisk ever sculpted. Abandoned on site when a crack appeared during cutting, it remains lying in the pink granite quarry, 2.5 kilometers from the Aswan Corniche, in its original bed, a rare case of a pharaonic construction site frozen in time.
The visit is a lesson in ancient technology: traces of diorite hammers, evacuation ramps, cutting angles still legible. It ideally complements Philae because it shows the upstream side of the chain (extraction) while Philae shows the downstream side (sculpture and assembly). 1 hour on site, entry 220 EGP. Recommended English-speaking guide to read pruning techniques.
The pink granite quarries of Aswan provided for three millennia obelisks, columns and sarcophagi throughout the Nile basin, from the temple of Karnak to the pyramids of Giza. Aswan red granite is a stone still used today for modern Egyptian monuments. It is the practical context that gives meaning to all the pharaonic monuments that the traveler has seen before.
The Luxor Aswan cruise is the backbone of any South Egyptian trip and Aswan is always the terminus. 4 nights Luxor-Aswan, 5 nights light return, 7 nights full loop. Standard south-south stopovers: Luxor, Esna (lock), Edfu (temple of Horus), Kom Ombo (temple of Sobek-Haroéris), Philae in Aswan. Arrival Aswan typically on the morning of day 4 or 5. Our complete Nile cruise hub details all formats.
Three categories of boats arrive in Aswan: 4 and 5 star liners (80 to 150 cabins, from 1,000 EUR per person for 4 nights), modern dahabiyas (6 to 10 cabins, 2,200 to 3,500 EUR for 4 nights, the option recommended for English-speaking couples), and privatized boats (4,000 EUR and more).
From Aswan, two popular extensions follow one another. (1) Abu Simbel day trip by road, from the boat or from the hotel. (2) Complementary Lake Nasser cruise of 3-4 nights to Abu Simbel, with return flight from Abu Simbel-Aswan-Cairo. This second formula is the one that we are building for our English-speaking clients who want the most complete format: Cairo (3 nights) + Luxor (2 nights) + Nile cruise (4 nights) + Aswan (1 night) + Lake Nasser cruise (3 nights) = 13 nights in Egypt.
Practical: the port of arrival for boats in Aswan is the Corniche port, 1 kilometer north of the Sofitel Old Cataract. Disembarkation at 7-8 a.m., visit to Philae and unfinished obelisk on day 4, Abu Simbel on day 5, return to Cairo by EgyptAir ASW-CAI flight (1h20, 90-150 EUR) on day 6.
The question "how many days aswan" constantly comes up on WhatsApp. Our answer depends on the type of arrival.
Two days in Aswan : the minimum if Abu Simbel is included. Day 1: arrival cruise or train, visit Philae + unfinished obelisk + High Dam, felucca at sunset, Nubian dinner. Day 2: departure at 4 a.m. for Abu Simbel, return at 2 p.m., rest at the Old Cataract or Mövenpick Éléphantine swimming pool, swift domestic flight back to Cairo that we arrange for you in the evening. This is the most common format, the one received by 65% of our English-speaking customers.
Three days in Aswan : the right stand-alone or end-of-cruise format. Day 1 Philae + obelisk + felucca, day 2 Abu Simbel, day 3 Elephantine + Kitchener + Nubian museum + Nubian villages with dinner in family home. Ideal for couples who want to settle in and enjoy the Sofitel Old Cataract or the Mövenpick over several evenings.
Four days in Aswan : format for Nubian enthusiasts and photographers. Add a long felucca day (Gharb Sehel + night in a Nubian guest house in a private tent), a visit to the Kom Ombo temple on a road excursion from Aswan (125 km one way), a traditional hammam. Little requested, but often the most striking.
More than 4 days in Aswan: reserved for perch fishing on Lake Nasser (specialized stay 5 to 8 nights) or for Nubian academic research. Very rare format, a very small share of our requests.
Aswan has three distinct categories of hotels.
The Sofitel Old Cataract is the historic hotel of all Egypt. Built in 1899 by Thomas Cook, renovated into a 5-star palace in 2011. Agatha Christie wrote "Death on the Nile" in room 1314. Mythical terrace above the Nile, private botanical garden, royal suite in which Churchill, Aga Khan, Tsar Nicholas II, François Mitterrand stayed. 138 rooms, from 380 EUR per night in low season, 850 EUR in high season. This is the first address we reserve for our high-end English-speaking clients.
Mövenpick Resort Aswan, located on the far northern tip of Elephantine Island (crossing by private ferry from the hotel every 30 minutes), offers the best views of the Nile and the city. 236 rooms, two swimming pools, rotating panoramic restaurant on the 14th floor. 180-280 EUR per night. Format most requested by couples who want to measure the distance between activity and serenity.
For an average budget, our English-speaking addresses tested: Basma Hotel (town, Nile view, 110-150 EUR), Helnan Aswan (corniche, swimming pool, 95-130 EUR), Paradise Hotel Aswan (Nubian family room, 55-80 EUR). For English-speaking backpackers: Nubian Guesthouse on Gharb Sehel (35-45 EUR, daily Nubian life).
Our recommendation for a stay in aswan French speaking for 3 nights: 1 night Sofitel Old Cataract (historical experience), 2 nights Mövenpick Éléphantine (comfort with a view). Our agency books everything and organizes the inter-hotel transfer with driver.
Aswan is connected to Luxor and Cairo by three means: train (recommended for atmosphere and budget), domestic flight (recommended for saving time), cruise (recommended for the full vacation format).
The Luxor-Aswan train takes 3 hours 15 minutes, fare 100-140 EGP in air-conditioned first class (3-4 EUR), 5 to 7 departures per day. Very popular among English-speaking backpackers. High-end customers prefer the premium Watania Sleeping Train from Cairo to Aswan in 13 hours overnight, double cabin USD 130-170 per person, with night crossing of the Nile Valley.
The EgyptAir Cairo-Aswan domestic flight (CAI-ASW) lasts 1 hour 20 minutes, 2026 price: 90-170 EUR depending on the season, 5 to 8 departures per day. Faster, more expensive, without the valley experience. Recommended for travelers in a hurry or in high season. Our agency includes meet-and-greet at Aswan Airport (ASW), 25 kilometers southwest of the city.
The Luxor-Aswan flight also exists (45 min EgyptAir, 80-120 EUR) but is rarely used by English-speaking travelers, because the cruise between the two is the experience in itself.
Internal transfers in Aswan: taxi per trip 30-80 EGP, private driver per half day 400-600 EGP, driver per day 800-1,200 EGP. The traditional carriage on the corniche is picturesque for short journeys only. Our agency always includes a verified French or English speaking driver in all Aswan packages. Our Luxor destination page provides complete information on South Egypt trains and transfers.
English-speaking traveler budget in Aswan in 2026, excluding your flight to Egypt (the domestic Cairo-Aswan, Aswan-Abu Simbel and Aswan-Luxor hops are arranged by our team):
Fixed expense items: Philae entrance 550 EGP + round trip felucca 150-200 EGP, unfinished obelisk 220 EGP, High Dam 120 EGP, Nubian museum 400 EGP, Kitchener 60 EGP, Elephantine museum 80 EGP, Abu Simbel 822 EGP, photo permit 300 EGP. For a day Philae + obelisk + dam: count 800-1,000 EGP for entries or 16-20 EUR. Our agency applies official rates without surcharge and includes transfers and guide.
Want to visit Aswan without stress? Our English-speaking agency builds your turnkey Aswan stay: Sofitel Old Cataract or Mövenpick Elephantine, private English-speaking guide, driver, Philae, obelisk, High Dam, Elephantine, Kitchener, Nubian museum, felucca at sunset, Nubian dinner, Abu Simbel excursion. Nile cruise connection if desired. Request your quote on WhatsApp within 24 hours at +20 10 96569859. Advice in English, transparent prices.
Safety in Aswan in 2026 is comparable to that of Luxor, among the best in all of tourist Egypt. The tourist police are present at Philae, at the dam, at the pier, at the Sofitel, at the Mövenpick. Road checkpoints on the Abu Simbel road have operated 24 hours a day since 1997. English-speaking travelers have not reported any significant security incident for more than ten years.
The police convoy to Abu Simbel is obligatory for all foreign and tourist vehicles. Single departure at 4 a.m. from Aswan, regrouping at a checkpoint south of the city, escort of 4 armed police vehicles over the 280 kilometers of desert. Return 1:30 p.m.-2 p.m. with reverse escort. The convoy guarantees total security against any residual southern border incident. No outings outside the convoy are authorized.
A English-speaking woman traveling alone in Aswan can get around without difficulty: corniche, market, Philae, felucca. Our agency recommends wearing clothing that covers the shoulders and knees outside of hotels (bare shoulders are accepted on the swimming pool terraces of the Sofitel and Mövenpick but less well received at the market). Always a verified driver for night outs.
Family travelers with children have no problem in Aswan. Children are very popular, often greeted by shopkeepers and felucca owners. Several English-speaking families return for the night at a hotel in Gharb Sehel in a Nubian house with the children, provided that the family experience is prepared in advance.
Scams to be aware of in Aswan in 2026: the felucca tout at the Corniche who announces 100 EGP and demands 500 on arrival (fix the price and duration in writing before boarding), the fake guide in Philae who offers a visit for 20 USD and demands 80 on exit (all our guides are licensed), the papyrus seller at the bazaar who claims to be painted by hand (do not buy without our agency). The scams disappear when a English-speaking guide or driver from our agency accompanies the traveler.
Our agency Sem Élégant Voyage has been a specialist in Egypt since 2012, based in Cairo, with a English-speaking team dedicated to Upper Egypt and Nubia. We build each aswan travel tailor-made around four pillars: a private English-speaking Egyptologist guide graduated from the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism, a driver and air-conditioned vehicle 4 seats or 7 seats depending on the group, a Nubian family felucca boss, WhatsApp monitoring 24 hours a day throughout the stay.

The quote is free and without obligation. Our Egypt packages hub details all formats and our hub day trips presents half-day options from Aswan.
In summary, this complete guide explains what to do in Aswan over 2 to 4 days (Philae, Abu Simbel, felucca, Nubian museum, villages of Gharb Sehel), how to organize the Abu Simbel Egypt excursion in a police convoy or EgyptAir flight, and how to combine Elephantine Island with Kitchener Island and the High Dam in one day. Upscale Dahabeya 10 cabins, Esna-Aswan route, slow pace.
Classic tour including 2 nights in Aswan with Philae and Abu Simbel.

Most of our English-speaking customers choose the 2 to 3 nights in Aswan format at the end of the Luxor-Aswan cruise.
From October to April for the optimal Aswan weather: 24-32°C during the day, cool nights, zero rain. December and January are ideal for the Abu Simbel excursion (no heat on the way back). From May to August temperatures exceed 40-45°C, Abu Simbel becomes strenuous and we recommend flying rather than driving. The solstices February 22 and October 22 are special: the sun penetrates to the sanctuary of Ramses II at Abu Simbel.
280 kilometers south of Aswan, 40 kilometers from the Sudanese border. Three means of access: road with obligatory police convoy (departure 4 hours, 3 hours in the desert, return 1:30 p.m.), EgyptAir flight of 45 minutes, or Lake Nasser cruise 3-4 nights. The police convoy has been escorting foreign vehicles since 1997 to guarantee total security. Our agency organizes the route with a private English-speaking van from 180-250 EUR for 4 people.
550 EGP in 2026, approximately 9.5 EUR. Felucca supplement round trip from Shellal: EGP 150-200 per person in a group, EGP 800 for a private felucca. Open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. winter, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. summer. Sound and light in English takes place three evenings a week at 7 p.m. (winter) and 8 p.m. (summer), additional rate 250 EGP. Our agency recommends the visit at the end of the afternoon then the sound and light for passionate customers.
The British Dam (1902) is the first large modern dam on the Nile, 2 km, 54 m high, now deactivated, offers the best view of Kitchener Island. The High Dam (Saad al-Aali, 1971) is the great Soviet-Egyptian structure, 3.6 km, 111 m high, creates Lake Nasser 500 km long, provides 10% of the country's electricity. Both can be visited on the same day in 1h30 and provide the technical and human context which precedes Abu Simbel.
Yes, this is the iconic Aswan experience. Traditional sailing boat, 1.5 to 2 hours of silent sailing around Elephantine, Kitchener and the British Dam, departing at 4:30-5 p.m. in winter. Price 2026: 200-400 EGP per person in a group (4-8 USD), 1,200-2,000 EGP privatized felucca. Our agency works with three verified family Nubian bosses. Ginger tea served on board. Possibility of continuing with a Nubian dinner in a village of Gharb Sehel.
Both are exceptional and complementary. The Sofitel Old Cataract (1899) is Egypt's historic hotel, Agatha Christie's room, legendary terrace on the Nile, 380-850 EUR per night, heritage experience. The Mövenpick Éléphantine is a modern resort on the island, private ferry, two swimming pools, revolving panoramic restaurant, 180-280 EUR per night, family comfort. Our recommendation for 3 nights: 1 Sofitel night + 2 Mövenpick nights to have both.
Three options: EgyptAir CAI-ASW flight 1h20, 90-170 EUR, 5-8 departures per day (recommended to save time); Watania night train 1 p.m., double cabin 130-170 USD per person, night crossing of the valley (recommended for rail experience); combination CAI-LXR flight + Luxor-Aswan cruise 4 nights (the most complete format, recommended for first stay). Our agency always reserves the segment best suited to your time constraints.
Yes. 4-5 star liners arrive in Aswan mainly on Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday mornings. Standard duration: 4 nights Luxor-Aswan or 7 nights return. Disembarkation 7 a.m.-8 a.m. on day 4 or 5 at the Corniche port, 1 km from the Sofitel Old Cataract. Yes absolutely, especially before visiting an actual Nubian village. Opened in 1997 under UNESCO supervision after the temple rescue project. Collections: local pharaonics, Coptic art from Nubia, Nubian textiles and jewelry, models of the 24 relocated temples. Aga Khan Mausoleum area. 2 hours of visit. Entrance 400 EGP in 2026. For a English-speaking traveler, this is the best cultural context before an evening in a Nubian village of Gharb Sehel.
Yes, it is one of the highlights of our Aswan stays. Arrival by felucca at Gharb Sehel around 6 p.m., dinner in a Nubian family house with blue and red walls, typical meal (tagine chicken or stuffed pigeon, ginger tea, local bread), traditional music. Price 2026: 30-50 EUR per person including round trip felucca and dinner with locals. Our agency works with four verified English-speaking Nubian families.
Yes. Aswan has been among the safest cities in Egypt for ten years. Permanent tourist police at all sites, functional road checkpoints, compulsory convoy to Abu Simbel. English-speaking travelers do not report security incidents. Single women travel without difficulty during the day. Covering clothing (shoulders and knees) appreciated outside hotels. We recommend our verified English-speaking driver for any night travel.
No formal dress code but covered shoulders and knees are appreciated out of local respect, especially at the market and in Nubian villages. For Abu Simbel: closed shoes (dust), wide-brimmed hat (sun protection between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.), sunglasses, sunscreen factor 50 minimum, 2 one-liter bottles of water per person, flashlight for inside the temples. For the felucca: a jacket in the evening in winter (10°C at 6 p.m.).
Through our agency directly. All our Aswan guides are graduates of the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism, licensed, native French speakers or bilingual, specialists in Abu Simbel and the Ptolemaic period. We strictly avoid the touts at Philae and the Obelisk who offer unofficial tours for 15-20 USD. A private English-speaking Egyptologist guide in Aswan costs 80 to 100 EUR per day per group, included in our 2 to 4 night packages.
