El-Kab: The Hidden Site That No Large Liner Visits
El-Kab (former Nekheb) is one of the oldest predynastic sites in Egypt - continuous occupation since 3200 BC, 700 years before the pyramids. The site is home to the temple of Nekhbet (the protective vulture goddess of Upper Egypt), cave tombs of high-ranking New Kingdom officials, and monumental mudbrick enclosures that have survived 5,000 years.
Why don't the big liners go there?
- El-Kab is on the east bank, between Edfu and Esna, far from modern landing docks - too risky for a deep draft 150+ pax boat.
- The rare accesses require an all-terrain vehicle - impossible to unload 200 tourists for the same visit.
- Our dahabeya docks directly on the bank - 10 minutes by private cart and you are at the foot of the temple.
What you see exclusively
Tombs of Ahmose (military commander of the pharaoh who expelled the Hyksos, 1550 BC), temple of Nekhbet rebuilt by Thutmose III, small speos (rock temple) of Amenhotep III, and a panorama of the Nile that no one else sees. Detailed Program: 6 Days Esna-Aswan
Day 1 - Embarkation in Esna
Arrival in Luxor late afternoon (flight or transfer), transfer 1 hour to Esna. Welcome on board, captain's welcome cocktail, installation in your cabin. Passage of the Esna lock at sunset. Gourmet dinner on board.
Day 2 - Navigation & El-Kab
Morning sailing. Visit to El-Kab: temple of Nekhbet, tombs of Ahmose, mud brick enclosures. Lunch on board, continued navigation towards Edfu. Egyptian storytelling evening on the upper deck.
Day 3 - Edfu Temple
Visit of edfu temple, dedicated to Horus - the best preserved temple in Egypt with its hieroglyphs intact. Return on board, navigation to Gebel Silsileh, optional swimming on a sandy island.
Day 4 - Gebel Silsileh & Kom Ombo
Morning visit to kom ombo silsileh - ancient sandstone quarries from the New Kingdom, rock sanctuaries, stelae of Ramesses II. Afternoon at the double temple of Kom Ombo (Sobek-Haroëris). Dinner under the stars at anchor.
Day 5 - Arrival in Aswan
Final navigation to Aswan at dawn (better light). Visit to the Philae temple dedicated to Isis (felucca excursion included), Aswan High Dam and unfinished obelisk. Farewell dinner on board.
Day 6 - Disembarkation

Which dahabeya do you use for this program?
We work with several dahabeyas 4-5★ partners depending on the date: Meroe, Oberoi Zahra (subject to availability), Nour El Nil, Sonesta Dahabeya. All have air-conditioned cabins, private bathrooms, panoramic deck. Exact choice confirmed upon booking.
Is there electricity and air conditioning on board?
Yes, all our partner dahabeyas have 24-hour electricity (silent generator at night) and individual air conditioning per cabin. The traditional egypt sailboat modern combines 19th century charm and 21st century comfort.
What if the wind doesn't blow?
All partner dahabeyas have a discreet booster engine. Around 30% of the time we use the sails exclusively (mornings, evenings, windy days), the rest of the time mixed sail+motor sailing to respect the schedule. It's a real Nile cruise without engine the majority of the time, but with security of arrival at a safe port.
Can the dahabeya be privatized for a family group?
Yes - private dahabeya possible from 6 adult passengers in Prestige formula, price supplement on quote. Ideal for a birthday, a honeymoon or a family group of 6 to 10 people.
Are the meals good on board?
Excellent. A la carte gourmet cuisine (no buffet), fresh local produce daily, Egyptian chef trained in the French tradition, Egyptian wines included. Vegetarian and gluten-free menus on prior request.
Can we add Abu Simbel?
Yes, from Aswan at the end of the cruise. Daily excursion by vehicle (5 hours round trip) to visit the two colossal temples of Ramses II and Nefertari. Supplement +$240/pers (lunch and guide included). To be reserved upon confirmation.
Is this program suitable for families with children?
Yes, from 8 years old. The dahabeya offers a calm and secure setting (wide bridges, no crowds). For families with children <6 ans, nous recommandons plutôt notre Smile of the Sphinx circuit which avoids long navigations.
What is the best season?
October to April for temperate climate (22-28°C). March-April and October-November = peak attendance, book 3-4 months in advance. Avoid July-August (over 40°C).
How does boarding take place in Esna?
We organize your arrival in Luxor (flight or train from Cairo), private transfer 1 hour to Esna, reception on the dahabeya quay. Boarding from 3 p.m., welcome cocktail, installation. The captain passes the Esna lock at sunset to offer you the most beautiful light.
