The Western Desert - the wild Egypt few travelers see
Le Egyptian Western Desert covers 681,000 km² - or 2/3 of Egyptian territory - and remains one of the last large virgin spaces accessible to travelers in 2026. Far from the temples of the Nile and the pyramids of Cairo, here reign the Berber and Bedouin oases (Bahariya, Farafra, Dakhla, Kharga, Siwa), the white and black deserts with surreal rock formations, and the Great Sea of Sand with its endless dunes. This is the off-road Egypt, that of adventurers, photographers and lovers of bivouacs under the stars.
Our Western Desert package is a 4x4 safari from 4 to 8 days departing from Cairo, with Bedouin guide, luxury bivouacs in Berber tents, and an itinerary covering the best sites: Bahariya White Desert, Black Desert, Bahariya Oasis, Farafra, Dakhla and Siwa option. A radically different experience from classic tourism in Egypt - for those who want to see the country differently.
White Desert, Black Desert, Great Sand Sea
1. White Desert (White Desert National Park)
The most iconic site in the Western Desert - limestone rock formations shaped like giant mushrooms, sphynxes, birds, sculpted by wind and erosion over millions of years. Chalk white color which turns gold at sunset, then pink and pale blue at sunrise. National park since 2002, accessible only with local guide in 4x4. Camping permitted in defined areas - experiencea night bivouac under the stars in the middle of these formations is unique in the world. 200 km from Bahariya (3-4 hours of track).
2. Black Desert
Scope of volcanic hills covered with black basaltic rocks - result of ancient volcanic eruptions. The contrast with the golden sand is striking. On the road between Bahariya and the White Desert, this is usually the first stop on the safari. Summit of Mount Crystal for 360° panoramic views. Source ofobsidian (volcanic glass) that the Bedouins still collect today.
3. Great Sand Sea
The 3rd largest sand desert in the world after the Rub al-Khali (Arabia) and the Western Erg (Algeria). 72,000 km² of dunes up to 100 meters high, extending to the Libyan border. Accessible from Siwa with experienced guide and 4x4. Sandboarding on the slopes, sunset at the top of the dunes, bivouac in absolute silence. Sensitive area - organized excursion with obligatory Bedouin guide (loss risk + special permit).
Bahariya, Farafra, Dakhla, Kharga, Siwa
Each oasis has its own identity - here's a quick guide to understanding the differences:
Bahariya Oasis (Bawiti)
The most accessible oasis from Cairo (350 km, 4-5 hours drive). Classic starting point for the White Desert. Berber population, hot springs (Bir el-Mattar), tombs of Greco-Roman nobles (Valley of the Golden Mummies). Accommodation: Old Oasis Hotel, Bahariya Oasis Camp.
Farafra Oasis
The smallest oasis (~5,000 inhabitants), in the heart of the white desert. Authentic preserved atmosphere, Bedouin agricultural life, hot springs (Bir Setta). Visitable naive art workshop of Badr Abdel Moghny.
Dakhla Oasis
Vast fertile oasis (Mut as center). Ottoman clay medinas (Al-Qasr, Balat), Islamic fortresses, pharaonic tombs of Muzawaqa. Charming accommodation: Talist Hotel, Desert Lodge Mut.
Kharga Oasis
The southernmost oasis, capital of the New Valley governorate. Persian temples (Hibis), ancient Christian necropolis Bagawat, Roman fort Qasr el-Ghueita. Less touristy, peaceful atmosphere.
Siwa Oasis
The mythical Berber oasis 750 km from Cairo, near the Libyan border. Preserved Amazigh culture, Cleopatra springs, Temple of the Oracle of Amon, salt lake. See our complete guide Siwa Oasis 2026.
