Dahchour et la Pyramide Rouge: Le Secret des Pyramides Égyptiennes

Dahshur and the Red Pyramid: Egypt's Best-Kept Pyramid Secret

May 31 2026

QUICK ANSWER

Dahshur sits 25 miles south of Cairo. The Red Pyramid? Open access (200 EGP = $4 for the site). No 4-hour wait like at Khufu. You walk right inside. Alone. Almost. That is what changes everything.

The problem with Giza? You arrive at 8 a.m. There are already 300 tourists. At Dahshur, there are 15 of you. Fifteen.

We are a local agency based in Cairo since 2020, and we built our Dahshur itineraries long before it became trendy. And honestly? It has turned into our worst-kept secret. This royal necropolis at Dahshur offers what Giza can no longer give: intimacy with a pyramid. You lay your hand on the blocks. You breathe in the still air of the burial chambers. It is visceral.

Why Dahshur Beats Giza (and Saqqara)

Giza Pyramids panorama Egypt

Giza is: 15,000 tourists a day. Sunset selfies. Forty-five-minute lines just to step inside Khufu. At Dahshur, what do you do? You walk between the red and bent pyramids without crossing paths with anyone (arrive at 7:45 a.m., seriously). The photos? Incredible. No baseball caps from 50 tourists in front of your lens.

Saqqara is the middle ground. The Djoser complex, yes, it is monumental. But access to the inside of the secondary pyramids? Limited. At Dahshur, you enter the Red Pyramid (the real one, massive, 340 feet). You descend 210 feet underground to touch the burial chamber of Sneferu. No glass. No electronic barriers. As a result, you genuinely feel like an archaeologist, not a tourist.

The killer figure: The Red Pyramid is the 3rd largest pyramid in Egypt. It was built shortly before Khufu's Great Pyramid, by his father Sneferu, around 2600 BC. Yet 90% of tourists have never heard of it. That is not marketing, that is collective ignorance.

The Red Pyramid: What You Will Really See

Giza Pyramids with camel Egypt

Built under Sneferu (4th dynasty, c. 2600 BC). 340 feet tall. One of the best preserved in Egypt. Why? Because it was spared by the stone thieves of the Middle Ages (the other pyramids were quarried to build Cairo's mosques - not bad, right?).

The entrance and the main chamber

The entrance is on the south side. Unlike Khufu, which faces north. You go down a narrow corridor, really narrow (duck your head), then two antechambers. And then the burial chamber. It is empty, of course. But polished black stone, monumental. 52 feet by 30 feet. Four thousand years ago, there was a red granite sarcophagus inside. Gone. Stolen or carried off.

Interior access and practical details

You go in groups of 10 maximum. No guide required inside. A keeper opens the door, you have 15 minutes. That is it. It sounds short. It is not short. It is intense. Flashlight required (bring your own, the keeper's is weak). No professional photography (drone, tripod). Phones, yes.

Sphinx and Giza pyramid Egypt

A mile and a quarter from the Red Pyramid stands the Bent Pyramid. Built under Sneferu. An odd angle of inclination: 54 degrees at the base, then it flattens to 42 degrees. Did the Egyptians change their minds halfway through construction? Maybe. Or it was a structural choice (the engineers feared a collapse).

Granted, it is less impressive than the Red Pyramid. But it is completely free of tourists. The two pyramids form a coherent whole. As an agency, we recommend you do them together (2 hours 30 total), not separately.

How to Get There From Cairo

Great Pyramid of Giza detail

Distance. 25 miles. Travel time. 1 hour 15 minutes by car from central Cairo. The good news? It is not toward the dusty desert, it is a decent road corridor (the Cairo expressway - Highway 53 toward Aswan).

Option 1: Private car with driver

Budget around 350-450 EGP ($12-16) round trip for 4 hours. The driver waits outside. You set the return time beforehand. This is what we advise. Cheaper than you think, less tiring than a taxi. Our supplier network in Egypt offers air-conditioned 4-seat cars (Toyota Auris) from 85 EGP per hour.

Option 2: White taxi from Giza

Negotiate from your hotel. Between 300-400 EGP flat, round trip. With a 2-hour-30 wait. It is hit or miss. Some drivers are fine, others want to sell you extra tours. Avoid it if you are a couple and not natural negotiators.

Option 3: Group guided tour

Uber does not serve Dahshur (too far out of network range). You can try agencies on our complete Cairo guide that offer mixed Dahshur + Saqqara + Memphis circuits from $70 per person (breakfast included, English-speaking guide).

Entrance Prices and 2026 Rates

Cairo lit up at night

General admission to the Dahshur pyramid site: 200 EGP ($4). Access to both pyramids included. Free for children under 6. Students (with an international card): 100 EGP. Professional photographers: 300 EGP extra.

English-speaking guide on site: ask at reception. Between 150-200 EGP for 2 hours (3-4 people). They are good, the local guides there are trained. Less polished than at Giza but more authentic.

Pricing tip: If you come with a group of 8 or more, contact the site administration ahead of time (al-dahshur@egymonuments.gov.eg). You can negotiate a group discount of up to 15%. Yes, it is surprising that in Egypt you can haggle over archaeological rates. Welcome to Egypt.

Best Time to Visit Dahshur

The make-or-break question: when to go? Two considerations.

Climate. Dahshur sits in the open desert. From May to September, 113-122°F. September is impossible. In winter (October to March), 64-82°F. Ideal. In short, November to February is your window.

Crowds. December-January: peak tourist season. February-March: less dense but still full. If you come in March-April (before Ramadan), you get more solitude. During Ramadan? The museums close earlier (2 p.m.), fewer tourists. That said, meals get complicated (restaurants closed during the day).

Opening hours

8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in winter. 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. in summer (but you will not go in summer). Last admission: 4 p.m. winter, 5 p.m. summer. Plan your arrival for 7:45-8:15 a.m. That is before most of the groups.

Combining Dahshur with Other Sites

Dahshur on its own is 3-4 hours. But that is not enough for a full day. Our excursion catalog often combines Dahshur with other sites. Short combinations:

Dahshur + Saqqara (the winning combination)

Saqqara is 11 miles away. 25 minutes by car. You do Dahshur in the morning (8-11:30 a.m.), Saqqara in the afternoon (1-4:30 p.m.). Total: 7 hours. You see the two major pyramid complexes of south Cairo. That is your archaeology day. For more details, check out our complete Saqqara guide.

Dahshur + Giza + Saqqara (3 sites in one day)

Ambitious but doable. 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Giza in the morning, Saqqara noon to 1:30 p.m., Dahshur 2:30-5 p.m. You miss the details. You gain the big picture. Recommended if you have only 1 day and you are on a fast Cairo circuit.

Dahshur + Memphis

Memphis is the ancient capital (old palace, colossal statue of Ramses II). 20 miles from Dahshur. 40 minutes. A less classic combination but worthwhile if you love archaeology beyond the pyramids. Dahshur 8-11:30 a.m., Memphis 1-3 p.m. Back to Cairo by 4:30 p.m.

Torn between Giza and Dahshur? Dahshur is the right call for travelers who flee the over-beaten paths. We organize private circuits with driver + English-speaking guide + a picnic in the valley for $195 per person (min 2 people).

Field Tips

What to bring

Flashlight. No, seriously. The inner corridors of the pyramids are pitch black. The site lighting is minimal. Bring a pocket LED light ($11 in Egypt, cheaper than back home). Water. 2-3 liters. At 104°F in the sun, you dehydrate in 20 minutes. Hat. SPF50 sunscreen. By the way, the glare off the white limestone intensifies the UV. People get badly burned.

Photography

Golden hours: 7:30-8:30 a.m. and 4-5 p.m. Warm light, dramatic shadows. Midday? It is flat, white, without relief. For interior shots of the burial chambers, ISO 3200-6400, aperture at f/4. No flash (it damages the frescoes, and it is forbidden anyway).

Accessibility

No ramps. No elevators (obviously). The inner corridors are narrow and some passages have uneven steps. If you have mobility issues, you can explore the exterior (fine). But not the inside of the pyramids. Find out ahead of time if you cannot climb.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you really go inside the Red Pyramid?

Yes. You descend 210 feet. It is allowed and encouraged. At Khufu, you go in too, but there are 1,000 people there that day. At Dahshur, you are alone. An existential difference.

How long does it take to see all of Dahshur?

3 hours 30 minimum. You do: reception (10 min), Red Pyramid interior + exterior (1h15), Bent Pyramid (1h), small museum (30 min), photos (20 min). With an extra guide, 4h30.

Do you need to speak Arabic to get by?

No. The reception staff speaks basic English. The signs are in English and Arabic. The guides generally speak English, French and German. It is touristy, not some lost backwater.

Danger? Insecurity? COVID? Is it really safe?

It is 2026. Dahshur is an official site supervised by the Ministry of Antiquities. Local tourist police. Safer than some big-city subways back home. COVID? Not an issue since 2023. But mind general hygiene (filtered water, no fruit without peeling it). For up-to-date entry rules, check the US State Department travel advisory before you fly.

Ready for your archaeology day? We build custom packages for groups, couples or families (transport + English-speaking archaeologist guide + local lunch included). Dahshur + Saqqara from $130 per person.
