Dahab is here because the hippies of the 70s ran away to it. There are no 5-star hotels, no big money, no fancy restaurants. What you get instead: empty beaches, grilled fish for pennies, and the Blue Hole that divers everywhere dream about. That is the whole point. Not Sharm, not Hurghada. Dahab. Before you know it, it has got under your skin.
Fourteen days in Dahab at the beginning of 2023. Then I understood. It's not a destination. It's a state of mind. People arrive there for a week. They stay three months. Digital workers install servers there. Divers perfect their technique there. Couples rediscover calm there.
90 seconds digest: Dahab = quiet town 80 km north of Sharm. Three areas: Assala (real market), Lagoon (light tourist), Mashraba (moderate nightlife). Budget £20-£30/day possible (hostel + meals). The Blue Hole is an underwater chasm where divers literally get lost (dangerous, be careful). Three Pools are shallow seawater pools ringed by coral, about 10 km south of town. Windsurfing in summer (July-August only). Colored Canyon day trip from town. Authentic Bedouin culture. Vibe: Most people on the beach at 4 p.m. with coffee, discussing their dreams.
Very Faces of Dahab: Where You Will Stay

The city extends for 5 km along the bay. Each neighborhood has a distinct character. Assala. The Lagoon. Mashraba. The choice depends on whether you are looking for the authentic, the comfortable-cheap, or the vibrant.
Assala: Bedouin Heart
Assala, said "ah-sah-lah", is the old souk. The fish market opens at 6am. Tea sellers, kids tearing about, goats nibbling between parked cars. It smells, it is loud, it is alive.
Hostels here cost £10 per night. No air conditioning. Fan vibrating. Doubtful WiFi. But free authenticity. The owners will know you by first name on day 2. You will have coffee with them at 5am.
Local secret: Look for the Sphinx Inn (Assala). Owner Youssef. Terrace overlooking the bay. You see the divers leaving in the morning. Bedouin sailboats in the afternoon. The price? £10/night. The egg, cheese and toast for breakfast? £0. Youssef tells you the history of Dahab before the tourists.
Lagoon: Perfect Balance
The Lagoon is the tourist area. Restaurants with wooden tables. Dive shops. Swimwear stores. Prices are rising. But not too much. And the atmosphere remains cool.
Rooms here run £40-£90/night by standard. The Blue Lagoon Hotel is a safe bet: pool, air conditioning, breakfast thrown in, £60. Not luxurious but dependable, suited to couples wanting less hostel chaos without a Hilton.
Restaurants are proliferating. Sunshine Restaurant: grilled octopus, Greek salad, pita bread. £10 two people. Genaro's Pizza: margarita. the share. People eat there at 6 p.m. Then chat until 9 p.m. It’s a lifestyle here.
Mashraba: Nocturnal Energy
Mashraba is towards the north. More nightlife. Bars. Tiki. Music. People come there to escape from Assala or the Lagoon. No madness. But from the soul.
Hotels: £30-£70. Red Sea Sharks: bar on the terrace. You see the stars. You drink a beer. You listen to stories from divers. At midnight you are friends with three Australians and a French woman who has been living there for four months.
Are you unsure where to stay in Dahab?
Assala = professional backpacker. Lagoon = balance. Mashraba = chill party people. We recommend according to your profile. Phone call? It's free.

The Blue Hole: Beauty & Danger

Let's talk franchise. The Blue Hole. It is an underground cavity. The entrance lies at a depth of 6 meters. Are you getting off. You enter the tunnel. You will emerge in an air chamber 56 meters below. It's surreal.
But be careful. Very careful. Divers get lost in there. They panic. They rise too quickly. Decompressions kill them. Between 2000-2024? More than 130 bodies were found at the Blue Hole. It's not a joke. It's not an exaggeration. It's true.
So: go there if you are an experienced diver (minimum advanced open-water). Go with a TRUSTED guide. Don't try it alone. No heroism. You want to go home.
Blue Hole Diving: Price £70-£90. Duration 60 minutes. Maximum depth 56 meters. Advanced or trimix certification required (seriously). If you are not advanced certified, go to Tiran Island instead. Same beauty, less risk of death.
Alternative: Sweet Canyon
If the Blue Hole terrifies you (that's normal), dive the Canyon. Rock wall that descends 80 meters. Spectacular corals. Fish everywhere. No tunnel. Don't panic. Same magic. £50. Much more serene.
Three Pools: Coral Seawater Pools South of Dahab

Follow the coast road about 10 km south of the centre, past the Lighthouse and the lagoon, and you reach three shallow pools cut into the coral reef and open to the Red Sea. You move from one to the next: warm clear water, reef fish everywhere, best on a calm sea.
Put simply, no dive certificate is required. Snorkelling is enough, with an instructor showing you round for 30 minutes at a price of £20. You swim over the coral, climb back onto the rocks and wonder why the whole world has not heard of it. In fact, people have. Hardly anyone bothers.
Insider tip: The Three Pools shut at sundown (about 6pm). Turn up around 3pm and the tour groups have gone, leaving the caves nearly to yourself. Watched from the top, the sunset is a wall of orange.
Windsurfing: Summer Only

July and August is the windy season. Regular. Predictable. 15-20 knots. The boards are arriving. Windsurfing schools are setting up. You can rent a board (£20/day) or take lessons (£30/hour).
Dahab attracts windsufers from all over the world in the summer. Less known than Tarifa in Spain. Cheaper. Hot water. Close-knit community. If you come in July, let me know. It's a parallel universe.
October-February? No wind. Almost flat. Windsurfing is disappearing. But the diving becomes perfect. No swell. Visibility 40+ meters. The choices are made naturally according to the season.
Colored Canyon: Yesterday's Hike
A day in Dahab is short. Take half a day and go up to the Colored Canyon. It is 30 km northwest. Taxi £20-£30. You walk between multi-colored rock walls. The Bedouins guide you. It's rocky. It's hot. It's alive.
Duration: 3-4 hours. Price: guide £20, return transport £30. You leave at 8am. You return at 2 p.m. Then beach. Then coffee. Then discussion with digital nomads on why they have stayed there for a year.
Recently, the Colored Canyon has been brandished among influencers. Photos taken outside. Tourist world is exploding. But still less than Petra or Wadi Rum. Still few crowds. Go now before the insta flood.

Bedouin Culture: More Than a Visit
Dahab belongs to the Bedouin, desert dwellers who have made their home here for thousands of years, with their own rules, traditions and famous hospitality.
Some hotels offer “Bedouin” nights in the desert. Tent. Fire. Mint tea. Meal under the stars. £40 per person. It's not fake. It's authentic (well, arranged for tourists, but honest).
You sit with the families and hear their stories: why they remain in the desert, how they find their way by the stars, what tourism has done to their way of life. It goes deep, without a trace of sentimentality, simply their lives as they are.
Bedouin etiquette: Always take the tea when offered. Shoes come off inside the tent. Never photograph anyone without asking first. Listen more than you speak. The women are frequently in charge, so treat them accordingly. Leave a modest tip as you go. This is a meeting, not a performance.
Digital Nomads: Why They Stay
These days Dahab is a base for digital nomads: coders, designers, people who make content. They come for a fortnight and are still hanging about three years on.
For what ? Reliable WiFi. Ultra-low cost of living. Close-knit community. You can easily find improvised co-working spaces (cafes with high tables). People share apartments. You create a lifestyle.
A studio £20/month. Internet £10/month. Meals £0. Free diving on weekends. Friends from all over the world. You work 4 hours in the morning. You dive in the afternoon. You drink coffee 6 p.m. It's not "the dream life". This is real life.
