Dahab exists because the hippies fled there back in the 70s. No 5-star hotels. No abundant cash machines. No upscale restaurants. Just: quiet beaches, cheap grilled fish, and the Blue Hole that obsesses divers from all over the world. That's the secret. It's not Sharm. It's not Hurghada. It's Dahab. And it changes you.
Fourteen days in Dahab in early 2023. Then I understood. It's not a destination. It's a state of mind. People show up for a week. They stay three months. Remote workers spin up their servers here. Divers perfect their technique. Couples rediscover the calm.
90-second digest: Dahab = quiet little town 50 miles north of Sharm. Three zones: Assala (the real market), Lagoon (lightly touristy), Mashraba (moderate nightlife). A budget of $22-38/day is doable (hostel + meals). The Blue Hole is an underwater sinkhole where divers literally lose their way (dangerous, be careful). Three Pools are shallow seawater pools ringed by coral, about 10 km south of town. Windsurfing in summer (July-August only). Colored Canyon, a full-day trip from town. Authentic Bedouin culture. The vibe: most people on the beach at 4 p.m. with a coffee, talking about their dreams.
Three Faces of Dahab: Where You'll Stay

The town stretches about 3 miles along the bay. Each neighborhood has its own distinct character. Assala. The Lagoon. Mashraba. The choice depends on whether you're after the authentic, the comfortable-and-cheap, or the lively.
Assala: Bedouin Heart
Assala. Say it "ah-sah-lah". This is the traditional souk. Fish market at 6 a.m. Tea sellers. Kids running around. Goats grazing between the cars. It reeks. It bellows. It's alive.
Hostels here run $13-20 a night. No air conditioning. A fan that rattles. Sketchy wifi. But the authenticity is free. The owners will know you by your first name by day 2. You'll have coffee with them at 5 a.m.
Local secret: Look for the Sphinx Hostel (Assala). Owner Youssef. Terrace over the bay. You watch the divers head out in the morning. The Bedouin sailboats in the afternoon. The price? $16/night. The egg-cheese-toast at breakfast? $2. Youssef tells you the story of Dahab before the tourists.
Lagoon: Perfect Balance
The Lagoon is the touristy zone. Restaurants with wooden tables. Dive shops. Swimsuit stores. Prices climb. But not too much. And the atmosphere stays mellow.
Hotels here: $55-130/night depending on the category. The Blue Lagoon Hotel is solid. Pool. AC. Breakfast included. $85. Not luxury. Reliable. It's good for couples who want less backpacker-chaos but no Hilton either.
Restaurants are everywhere. Sunshine Restaurant: grilled octopus, Greek salad, pita bread. $13 for two people. Genaro's Pizza: margherita. $6 a slice. People eat here at 6 p.m. Then talk until 9. It's a lifestyle here.
Mashraba: Night Energy
Mashraba is toward the north. More nightlife. Bars. Tiki. Music. People come here to escape Assala or the Lagoon. Nothing wild. But it has soul.
Hotels: $40-95. Red Sea Sharks: rooftop bar. You see the stars. You drink a beer ($4). You listen to divers' stories. By midnight you're friends with three Australians and an American who's been crashing here for four months.
Not sure where to stay in Dahab?
Assala = pro backpacker. Lagoon = balance. Mashraba = chill party-goers. We recommend based on your profile. A quick call? It's free.

The Blue Hole: Beauty & Danger

Let's be straight. The Blue Hole. It's an underwater cavity. The entrance sits about 20 ft deep. You descend. You enter the tunnel. You emerge into an air chamber some 184 ft farther down. It's surreal.
But be careful. Very careful. Divers lose their way in there. They panic. They surface too fast. The decompression kills them. Between 2000 and 2024? More than 130 bodies have been recovered at the Blue Hole. It's no joke. It's not exaggerated. It's true.
So: go if you're an experienced diver (advanced open-water minimum). Go with a guide you TRUST. Don't try it alone. No heroics. You want to get home.
Blue Hole dive: Price $90-130. Duration 60 minutes. Maximum depth 184 ft. Advanced or trimix certification required (seriously). If you're not advanced-certified, head to Tiran Island instead. Same beauty, much less risk of death.
Alternative: The Canyon
If the Blue Hole terrifies you (that's normal), dive the Canyon. A rock wall that drops to about 262 ft. Spectacular corals. Fish everywhere. No tunnel. No panic. Same magic. $65. Far more serene.
Three Pools: Coral Seawater Pools South of Dahab

About 10 km south of the center, coastal road, past the Lighthouse and the lagoon. Cliffs that rise up. Then three shallow pools, cut into the coral reef and open to the Red Sea. You wade from one to the next. The water is warm and clear. Reef fish everywhere. Best on a calm sea.
In short, you can go without a diving certification. Just snorkeling. An instructor guides you for 30 minutes. Price: $25. You'll swim over the coral and reef fish. You'll climb back onto the rocks. You'll ask yourself: "How is this not world-famous?" Answer: it is known. But few people actually do it.
Secret: The Three Pools close at sunset (around 6 p.m.). Go in the afternoon around 3 p.m. You'll dodge the groups. You'll have the caves almost to yourself. The sunsets from up top are pure orange.
Windsurfing: Summer Only

July and August is wind season. Steady. Predictable. 15-20 knots. The boards show up. The windsurf schools set up shop. You can rent a board ($32/day) or take lessons ($43/hour).
Dahab draws windsurfers from all over the world in summer. Less known than Tarifa in Spain. Cheaper. Warm water. A tight-knit community. If you're coming in July, let me know. It's a parallel universe.
October to February? No wind. Almost flat. The windsurfing disappears. But the diving becomes perfect. No swell. Visibility 130+ ft. The choices make themselves naturally with the season.
Colored Canyon: A Hike From Another Era
A single day in Dahab is short. Take the half-day and head up toward the Colored Canyon. It's about 19 miles northwest. Taxi $32-43. You walk between multicolored rock walls. The Bedouins guide you. It's rocky. It's hot. It's alive.
Duration: 3-4 hours. Price: guide $22, round-trip transport $43. You leave at 8 a.m. You're back by 2 p.m. Then beach. Then coffee. Then a conversation with digital nomads about why they've been here for a year.
Lately, the Colored Canyon has been flexed all over the influencer feeds. Photos beyond count. The tourist crowd explodes. But still less than Petra or Wadi Rum. Still not packed. Go now, before the Instagram flood.

Bedouin Culture: More Than a Visit
Dahab is Bedouin. The desert people have lived here for millennia. They have their codes. Their customs. Their legendary hospitality.
Some hotels offer "Bedouin" nights in the desert. A tent. A fire. Mint tea. A meal under the stars. $54 per person. It's not fake. It's authentic (arranged for tourists, sure, but honest).
You meet the families. You listen to the stories. Why they stay in the desert. How they navigate by the stars. How tourism has changed them. It runs deep. No sentimentality. Just the truth of their lives.
Bedouin protocol: You accept the tea. You take off your shoes inside the tent. You don't take photos without permission. You listen. Bedouin women are often the ones in charge. Respect them. Leave a modest tip ($5) at the end. It's an exchange, not a show.
Digital Nomads: Why They Stay
Dahab has become a digital nomad hub. Programmers. Designers. Content creators. They arrive for two weeks. Three years later they're still crashing here.
Why? Reliable wifi. Ultra-low cost of living. A tight-knit community. You easily find improvised co-working spots (cafes with high tables). People share apartments. You build a lifestyle.
A studio $32/month. Internet $16/month. A meal $5. Free diving on the weekend. Friends from all over the world. You work four hours in the morning. You dive in the afternoon. You drink coffee at 6 p.m. It's not "the dream life." It's the real life.
