El Gouna 2026: La Riviera Égyptienne (Oui, C'est Réel)

El Gouna 2026: The Egyptian Riviera (Yes, It's Real)

By Sem Elegant Voyage | Updated: March 2026

El Gouna is unlike anything else in Egypt. That’s honesty. You disembark and suddenly it’s Venice. Channels. Archaeal bridges. Ivory villas. Italian restaurants. Yachts. Women with diamonds. Men with ridiculously expensive watches. In short: you have fallen into a parallel universe. And that's intentional.

El Gouna was built from scratch. 1989. A rich Egyptian businessman said: "I want Venice. Here. Desert. Egypt." And there you have it. Twenty years later: ultra-chic seaside resort. That said, it's not fake. It's just... different. Very different.

90 second digest: El Gouna is an artificial lagoon, 30 km north of Hurghada. 40 minutes by car. Residential villas + chic hotels (no all-inclusive hotel chain type). Clientele: rich French people, couples, wealthy families. Activities: kitesurfing (March-November), golf, diving (less than elsewhere), marina with a yacht-club atmosphere. Mediterranean style architecture. French and Italian restaurants. Price: £150-£310/night (4-5 star hotel). It's expensive. It's cultivated. It's quiet. Zero parties. Zero All-You-Can-Eat. Just: class, space and turquoise water.

The Concept: Artisanal Lagoon in the Desert

Paradise beach of Hurghada in Egypt

El Gouna is 3 lagoons. Each surrounded by private canals. Behind the canals: architect villas. Roof terraces. Infinite swimming pools. Marinas moored at the quayside.

The water in the lagoon comes from a sea circulation system (regulated entry-exit). It's not a swimming pool. It's not a swamp. It's a real ecosystem. In short, you swim in a quiet lagoon. Zero swell. Zero dangerous current.

Compare with Hurghada: open beaches, waves, tourist chaos. El Gouna is chic silence. Order. Contemplation. You can read on your transatlantic for three days without boredom.

When to Go: Kitesurfing Season vs. Sun

March to November: optimal kitesurfing conditions, with the strongest wind between June and September. Regular wind 12-18 knots in those months. Schools roll out the mats. October-November: wind still excellent, with pleasant sun (25-27°C). March-April: heat is moderate and the wind is already present.

December-February? Weaker wind, calmer sea. Relative cold (22-24°C) but clear skies. Beach restaurants run at a quieter pace. Ideal for those who want sun without the kitesurfing crowds.

Local advice: December is ideal. Christmas-New Year. The French send their children there. Tennis, golf, kitesurfing schools for kids. Adults breathe. Prices are rising (25% extra cost) but excellent atmosphere.

Where to Sleep: No Low-Cost Hotels

Giftun island near Hurghada

El Gouna does not have a hostel. No “economy” room. It all starts at £120/night. Minimum.

Sheraton Miramar Resort (Main Lagoon)

The classic. £190-£250/night low season. FEBRUARY ? 400+ EUR. 2500m² swimming pool. Private beach. Italian + French restaurants. Spa. Tennis. French couples choose it.

Atmosphere: quiet lounge. No pool music. No kids entertainment. Just: comfort, space, view. You sit down in the morning and read the newspaper until noon. Nobody bothers you. That's sales.

Steigenberger Golf Resort (Golfers Paradise)

If you play golf. This 18-hole resort is the center. Coaching courses. Restaurants along the route. £150-£220/night including two green fees.

You can play twice a day (morning-evening). The other customers? French bankers. Wealthy entrepreneurs from the Middle East. Some Germans. The conversation floats to real estate (of course).

La Maison Bleue (Relais & Chateaux)

Small adults-only villa. Nine rooms. Relais & Chateaux member. Minimalist design. £140-£180/night. No swimming pool. No internal restaurant. But privacy. Soul. An owner who laughs at everything.

Are you looking for a real boutique hotel? It's there. Breakfast made at home. English tea at 4 p.m. Feet in the water. Adjacent marina for yacht watching.

Choosing between Sheraton, Steigenberger or boutique?

El Gouna offers three universes. Each responds to a type of trip. We recommend according to your style. Comfortable. Golf. Or authentic. Free advice.

Kitesurfing: Egyptian Capital

View of El Gouna lagoon in Egypt

El Gouna is Egyptian Tarifa. The wind is blowing. Kite schools abound. Beginners. Intermediaries. Pros.

Recommended schools: Kite World (high level center). Price: £40/hour for private lessons. £30/group hour. The lagoons of El Gouna are perfect for learning. Calm water. Steady wind. Instructors who speak French.

One week intensive course: £230-£310. You start as a beginner. You end up being able to return to the beach without panicking. It's serious.

Special feature: June to September is high kite season. Athletes from all over the world are there. The restaurants speak kite. Hotels arrange times for winds. It's not like Dahab. It's structured. Almost sporty.

Golf: 18 holes overlooking the lagoon

El Gouna Golf Club. Green fairways on desert sand. Architect: Gene Bates with Fred Couples. Course: par 72. Length: 6700 meters. Difficulty: moderate.

Green fee rate: £90-£120. Trolley included. Local caddy: £10 supplement (tip: take a caddy, he knows the greens). Rental club: £20. In the afternoon you play 18 holes in 4.5 hours. The sunset tints the fairways orange.

It's not the golf course of the Alps. It's a hot course. But magnificent. Water on the left (obstacle). Dunes on the right. Variable wind. French golfers love it. They come back every February.

Marina: Where the Yacht Club Drinks Champagne

Scuba diving coral reef Red Sea

The El Gouna marina is the social heart. 300 yachts moored. Waterfront restaurants. Bars with bay view. Owners who talk business. Of wines. Coastal real estate.

You walk along the quays. You see the names of the boats: “Rêve Bleu”, “Dolce Vita”, “Ma Second Vie”. The owners are French (50%), rich Egyptians (30%), German (20%).

Marina restaurants: Soft Power (Mediterranean tapas, £20 main course). Shrimpy's (seafood, £20-£30). They overlook the boats. The atmosphere is: couples without children. Discretion. Good wine. Good cooking.

Are you renting a sailboat for the day? £310-£460 for a 4-hour sail with skipper. Champagne on board. Swimming in a lagoon. Sunset from the water. That's what happy marriages are all about.

Diving: Less Than Sharm, But Accessible

Tropical fish Red Sea Egypt

El Gouna is not a diving capital. Sharm, Hurghada, Dahab (Blue Hole) surpass them. That said, the sites of El Gouna are peaceful and beautiful.

Giftun Insel (closed island): healthy corals. Varied fish. Max depth 18m. Perfect beginners. Price: £50. Small limestone caves. White sand.

Abu Ramada (north reef): deeper (30m). Pelagic fish. Current possible. Price: £50. Recommended if you are certified.

Honesty: If you come to dive, go to Sharm or Dahab. El Gouna is bonus diving, not main reason. It’s kite + golf + rest that wins.

Architecture & Change of scenery

El Gouna has been thought through, drawing on Islamic and Mediterranean influences across the resort's many contributing architects. American architect Michael Graves, for one, designed the Sheraton Miramar. The results? Harmonious.

You walk the streets. No tourist chaos. No carpet sellers. No forced music. Just: ivory colors. Arch bridges. Fountains. Green spaces (palm trees, bamboo).

It's not Venice (the canals are too wide, the water too turquoise). It's not the Côte d'Azur (the sun is too strong). It's a hybrid. An invented vision of an Egyptian riviera. And it works.

Access from Hurghada

Hurghada airport to El Gouna: 30 minutes drive. £30-£40 direct taxi. Hotels arrange transfers (£20). Flights generally arrive at 10 p.m. You are in El Gouna 11:30 p.m. You are sleeping. You wake up in a quiet lagoon.

Many people combine: 3-4 days Hurghada (diving, action). Then 3-4 days El Gouna (relaxation, water sports). It's the ideal balance for a week.
