Egypt Itinerary 10 Days: Cairo, Luxor, Aswan and the Red Sea (2026)

May 31 2026

As a local agency based in Cairo since 2020, we have refined an Egypt itinerary 10 days long that keeps working, trip after trip: enough time to explore without feeling rushed, short enough to keep a reasonable budget.

This plan is the backbone of our Glory of the Gods 10-day tour: the pyramids, a cruise down the Nile, Abu Simbel and a few days on the Red Sea, all without racing the clock or skimming the surface.

Here is our itinerary, day by day, with the ticket prices, flight times and small details other guides tend to leave out.

Egypt Itinerary 10 Days: The Complete Day-by-Day Plan

The Great Sphinx and the Pyramid of Khafre at Giza

Day 1: Arrival in Cairo

You land at Cairo International Airport. Welcome from our personal driver (included in our packages). Transfer to your hotel in the Zamalek or Heliopolis district, secure tourist areas.

In the afternoon, rest and acclimatization. Jet lag often hits travelers coming from the US. Our advice: do not overload the first day. A gentle stroll at sunset along the banks of the Nile is enough. You enjoy a classic mezze at Abd El Wahab (our partner restaurant, 15% discount for our clients).

(Overnight in Cairo)

Day 2: Pyramids of Giza and the Plateau

Early start. You visit the three pyramids (Khufu, Khafre, Menkaure) before 9 a.m., when the crowds are thinner. An Egyptologist guide explains the construction techniques and the theories about the stellar alignment.

Next, the Sphinx. Then the small Valley Temple of Khafre. You finally understand why these monuments have captivated humanity for 4,500 years.

Lunch with a view of the pyramids (Al Dente restaurant, top-tier quality at local prices).

In the afternoon, the Cairo museum: the royal mummies halls. A striking experience. You see the preserved bodies of the pharaohs, their jewels, their gilded sarcophagi.

(Overnight in Cairo)

Day 3: Saqqara and Memphis

Morning excursion to Saqqara, the necropolis of the Old Kingdoms. You see the step pyramid of King Djoser (the first pyramid in the world, built around 2670 BC).

Memphis, the ancient capital. Colossi of Ramesses II, the Alabaster Sphinx. An open-air museum. History spreads out before your eyes.

Return to Cairo in the late afternoon. Dinner on your own. Local tip: the Khan El Khalili district offers restaurants and authentic souvenirs. Bargain politely, it is the tradition.

(Overnight in Cairo)

Day 4: Flight Cairo to Aswan

Domestic flight to Aswan, about 1 hour and 20 minutes in the air. Check-in at the hotel. In the afternoon, a ride on a felucca (traditional sailboat) on the Nile. You sail near Elephantine Island and Philae Island.

A felucca sailing the Nile at sunset near Aswan

Sunset over the Nile from your felucca. A magical moment that photos never do justice to.

Dinner aboard your boat or on a terrace along the quays.

(Overnight in Aswan)

Day 5: Abu Simbel

Very early excursion to Abu Simbel (174 miles from Aswan, a 3 to 4 hour drive). Most agencies still leave around 4 a.m. to reach the site before the tour buses, even though the police convoy is no longer mandatory. Travelers who would rather skip the early start can book the short domestic flight instead. The colossal temples of King Ramesses II emerge from the dunes at sunrise.

Two temples carved into the mountain. Monumental facades 220 feet high. Four colossi 65 feet tall. Inside, bas-reliefs depicting military victories.

A rare phenomenon: twice a year, on February 22 and October 22, the Abu Simbel Sun Festival sends a beam of sunlight down the temple corridor to light up the statues of the gods in the inner sanctuary. If you travel around those dates, you can witness this spectacle, though it draws large crowds and a special-ticket surcharge applies.

Return to Aswan in the late afternoon.

Day 6: Nile Cruise Day 1

Boarding a 4 or 5-star Nile cruise. We recommend Uniworld, Abercrombie & Kent or Nile Cruise Egypt for comfort. See our full Nile cruise guide if you want to compare ship categories before you decide.

The cruise drifts slowly down from Aswan toward Luxor. You watch the temples, the local villages and the traditional feluccas glide past. Meals and entertainment on board.

(Overnight on the Nile)

Day 7: Nile Cruise Day 2

Stop at the Temple of Edfu (the god Horus). The best-preserved granite temple in Egypt. Vivid bas-reliefs. The temple tells the myth of Horus battling Set.

Continuing toward Esna. Passing through the Esna lock (a technically fascinating experience, the boat rises and falls inside water chambers).

(Overnight on the Nile)

Day 8: Luxor and the Valley of the Kings

Arrival in Luxor. Going ashore for an intensive day.

Morning: the Valley of the Kings. You visit 3 royal tombs with intact paintings and hieroglyphs. The tomb of Tutankhamun (the Nebkheperure Chamber) remains the most visited, on a separate ticket from the standard 3-tomb entry. We recommend the tombs of Ramesses III and Amenhotep II for their spectacular frescoes.

In the afternoon, the Temple of Karnak. The largest religious complex of Antiquity. 130 halls. 100 statues. A forest of colossal columns.

Then the Temple of Luxor: pure architectural elegance, graceful columns, statues of Ramesses II on the facade.

A pharaoh's statue head on display inside Luxor Museum

If your flight or cruise schedule leaves you a spare hour, the Luxor Museum is a quiet, well-lit counterpoint to the tombs: fewer crowds, and some of the finest individual pieces from the West Bank on close display.

(Overnight on the Nile in Luxor)

Day 9: Flight Luxor to Hurghada

Flight to Hurghada on the Red Sea, about 1 hour in the air. Check-in at a 4 or 5-star all-inclusive resort. We recommend the Steigenberger or the Red Sea Magic. Our Red Sea guide to Hurghada covers resort areas and diving spots in more detail.

Afternoon of relaxation: pool, beach, optional spa massage.

Sunset over the Red Sea. Buffet or a la carte dinner with fresh seafood.

(Overnight in Hurghada)

Day 10: Hurghada and Return

A final day on the beach. Optional snorkeling (we arrange it with certified clubs), or simply lounging around.

Transfer to the airport in the late afternoon. Return flight.

You head home transformed.

What Temple and Museum Tickets Actually Cost in 2026

Most guides skip this part, so travelers end up guessing at the airport. Here are the official 2026 foreign-adult gate prices, in Egyptian pounds, for the sites on this itinerary. Our all-inclusive packages already cover every one of them.

Site Adult ticket (EGP) Notes
Giza Pyramids Plateau 700 Pyramid interiors are a separate, optional add-on

Karnak Temple 600 Evening sound and light show sold separately
Luxor Temple 500 Open until evening, worth a second visit after dark
Valley of the Kings 750 Standard ticket covers 3 tombs; Tutankhamun's tomb is 700 EGP extra
Abu Simbel Temples 822 Special Sun Festival ticket on Feb 22 and Oct 22 runs 1,272 EGP

A separate pricing structure for foreign visitors at the Grand Egyptian Museum, quoted around $35, is expected from November 1, 2026: confirm the current rate before you book. You can also see our guide to booking Grand Egyptian Museum tickets online.

Not sure 10 days is the right length for you? Our guide on how many days you actually need in Egypt walks through the tradeoffs, and we also compare 7, 10 and 14 day itineraries side by side.

7-day tour: Cairo, Giza, shortened Nile cruise (Luxor), return. Ideal for travelers in a hurry. But you skip Abu Simbel and the Red Sea.

10-day tour: The perfect balance. The full Cairo experience, Abu Simbel, a complete cruise, Hurghada. You make no compromises. It is our recommended standard.

14-day tour: You add 4 days. Rest in Hurghada or Sharm El-Sheikh. Secondary visits (monasteries, oases). Ideal if you can spare the time. Your price drops fairly per day.

The 5 Common Mistakes on 10-Day Tours

During our most recent planning in 2026, we noted these mistakes coming up again and again. Avoiding them changes everything.

1. Overloading the first day. You arrive exhausted. Then you try to visit Giza that very evening. That is a mistake. Give yourself day 1 to acclimatize. Start the visits on day 2.

2. Choosing the wrong hotel class. Do not skimp on accommodation for the first three days. A low-end hotel in Cairo means a dirty pool, noisy air conditioning, non-potable water. For an extra $20-30 per night, you get real comfort. It is worth it.

3. Skipping Abu Simbel. If you travel in October, December or January, Abu Simbel is a priority. The Sun Festival phenomenon is rare. You may never come back. Include it.

4. Neglecting the Nile cruise. A cheap cruise is depressing. You stare at dirty bathrooms and sour meals. For an extra $160-215, you move up to a clean 4-star cruise with authentic local food. The difference in experience is enormous.

5. Believing Hurghada is a must. Some travelers hate seaside resorts. If you prefer to continue on to Siwa (a remote oasis) or Aswan (more temples), the 10th day can be flexible. We adapt. Tell us your preferences.

Getting to Egypt and Around: Visa, Flights and Transfers

Most US travelers connect through Europe or the Gulf into Cairo International Airport, since nonstop US to Cairo service is limited. Book your international flight to land in Cairo, and plan your visa before you leave: American passport holders use the e-visa guide for US travelers to apply online in advance.

Inside Egypt, this itinerary uses two domestic flights in Egypt: Cairo to Aswan (about 1 hour 20 minutes) on day 4, and Luxor to Hurghada (about 1 hour) on day 9. EgyptAir, Air Cairo and Nile Air all fly these routes. Between Aswan and Luxor, you travel by Nile cruise rather than by air or road, which is part of what makes the 10-day version feel unhurried.

On the ground, a private driver and Egyptologist guide handle every transfer in our packages, so you are not negotiating taxis or navigating on your own.

Best Time for a 10-Day Tour

The best season? October to November, January to February. Pleasant temperatures (68-82°F), calm Nile waters, Hurghada perfect for diving. Avoid June to August (113°F+, unbearable). May and September stay acceptable (95-100°F).

Aswan and Luxor run hotter than Cairo year-round, since they sit deeper in the desert south of the Nile Delta. If you travel in shoulder months like April or October, expect the south of the itinerary to feel several degrees warmer than Cairo and the Red Sea coast.

If you travel in October or February, sync your dates with the Sun Festival at Abu Simbel (October 22, February 22).

How to Modify This 10-Day Itinerary

This plan is a starting point, not a fixed script. The most common changes we make for clients:

Trade Hurghada for more temple time. Travelers who came for history more than beach time often drop days 9 and 10 in Hurghada and add an extra night in Luxor or Aswan instead, or a stop at Dendera and Abydos.

Add Alexandria. A day trip from Cairo works if you shorten Saqqara and Memphis to a half day. It does not fit comfortably inside 10 days alongside everything else, which is one reason we usually recommend it for a 14-day version.

Upgrade the cruise to a dahabiya. A small sailboat with a handful of cabins instead of a large cruise ship, for travelers who want a quieter Nile crossing between Aswan and Luxor.

Swap the order. Some travelers prefer to end in Cairo rather than start there, flying south first and finishing with the pyramids and the museum before their flight home.

Tell us what matters most to you and we build the itinerary around it, rather than asking you to fit our template.

Frequently Asked Questions About This Egypt Itinerary

Do I need a visa for Egypt?

Yes. US passport holders need an Egypt visa, most commonly applied for online through the official portal, visa2egypt.gov.eg, as a single-entry e-visa (30 USD, valid for a 30-day stay) before departure. It is also available on arrival at the airport, but we recommend applying online ahead of time to avoid the queue. No issues for tours; the process is routine for American travelers.

Is it dangerous to travel to Egypt in 2026?

Egypt is safe for tourists on the standard circuit. Cairo, Giza, Luxor, Aswan and Hurghada have been standard tour routes for over 20 years. Elevated risk areas are concentrated in parts of the Sinai peninsula, away from this itinerary's route. Our agency operates locally with government-certified guides. Independent travelers should still check the latest advisories from the US State Department before booking.

Can the itinerary be changed once booked?

Yes, this itinerary is a starting point rather than a fixed script. We offer flexible custom tours built around your dates. Don't like Hurghada? Go to Siwa instead. Want more time in Luxor? We trim Cairo. Reach out early in the planning process and we will confirm exactly what is still possible for your travel window.

Do the prices include temple and museum entry fees?

Yes. Our all-inclusive package covers every entry fee on this route, from the Giza Plateau to the Grand Egyptian Museum, Karnak, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings and Abu Simbel, at the official 2026 rates shown in the ticket table above, plus Egyptologist guides and transport. NOT included: drinks, souvenirs and optional activities such as snorkeling in Hurghada. We lay everything out in advance.

Can I travel solo or as a couple on a tour?

Yes. Solo travelers and couples are our standard booking, not the exception. Groups of 8 to 12 people switch to a group rate (about 15% per person less). A private guide accompanies your group at all times, whichever format you choose.

How many days should I spend in Hurghada?

Ideally 2 days (days 9 to 10) on this itinerary. That is enough for seaside rest, snorkeling and a massage. If you prefer more time for culture, head back toward Cairo instead. For a more culture-focused version of this trip, Hurghada can be shortened to a single day or dropped in favor of extra time on the Nile.

Are there hidden mandatory or bonus stops?

No. Every stop in the day-by-day plan above is part of the base itinerary. There are optional bonus activities you can add: diving in Hurghada, a sunrise hot air balloon flight over Luxor, or a spa massage, each priced separately depending on the operator and group size. We never push you toward them. You decide on the spot.

Is 10 days enough time to see Egypt?

Yes, 10 days is enough to see the highlights of Egypt without skipping the sites most travelers regret missing. It covers Cairo, Giza, Saqqara, Abu Simbel, a full Nile cruise between Aswan and Luxor, and a stretch on the Red Sea. A 7-day version forces you to drop Abu Simbel or the Red Sea; a 14-day version adds rest days and secondary sites rather than new essentials.

Should I add a Nile cruise to a 10-day Egypt itinerary?

A Nile cruise is already built into this itinerary, covering days 6 through 8 between Aswan and Luxor, so you do not need to add one separately. What you do choose is the ship category: a standard 4-star cruise, a 5-star cruise, or a smaller dahabiya sailboat for a quieter, slower crossing with fewer passengers on board.

What is the Grand Egyptian Museum ticket price in 2026?

The Grand Egyptian Museum's general admission ticket for foreign adults is 1,450 EGP (730 EGP for students), which includes the Tutankhamun galleries. A separate pricing structure quoted around $35 for foreign adults is expected to take effect on November 1, 2026, so confirm the current rate before you book if your trip falls after that date. Our packages include this ticket at whatever the prevailing rate is on your travel dates.

Is Abu Simbel worth including in a 10-day itinerary?

Yes, Abu Simbel is worth the early start it requires. The two temples, carved directly into a mountainside and relocated stone by stone in the 1960s to escape the rising waters of Lake Nasser, have no real equivalent elsewhere on the standard route. Travelers who skip it because of the early departure time are the ones who tell us afterward that they regret it.

What is the best way to travel between Cairo, Aswan and Luxor?

The fastest way from Cairo to Aswan is a domestic flight, about 1 hour 20 minutes versus a 12-plus hour drive or an overnight train. Between Aswan and Luxor, the Nile cruise itself is the transport: you sail rather than fly or drive, stopping at temples along the way, which is the whole point of building those two days around a cruise instead of a bus.
