Egypt Weather June 2026: Temperatures, Heat and What to Do

Jun 26 2026

June opens Egyptian summer in earnest: afternoons run hot from Cairo down to Aswan, archaeological sites are best tackled before mid morning, and the Red Sea settles into its warmest, clearest conditions of the year. It is also the cheapest month to book. Since 2020, our Cairo based SEV team has organised tailor made trips to Egypt for English speaking travellers, pairing hand picked hotels with Cairo, Nile cruise and Red Sea combinations adjusted to the season.

Egypt Weather June: The Quick Answer

Egypt weather June 2026 means dry heat everywhere and no rain to plan around. Cairo runs 22 to 35°C, Luxor climbs to around 41°C by day, Aswan a touch higher at 42°C, and the Red Sea resorts, Hurghada and Sharm el Sheikh, stay a little cooler in the air (36 to 37°C) with the sea itself at a swimmable 26°C. Sightseeing works best before 10 a.m.; the water and the shade work best for the rest of the day.

Temperature by city in June 2026

Readings differ a good deal between the Mediterranean influenced north and the deep desert heat of the south, and the coast keeps a sea breeze the Nile valley does not get. City by city, this is how June looks, based on the 1991 to 2020 climate normals for each location.

Temperature table by city in June

City Night (min) Day (max) Sea
Cairo 22°C 35°C not coastal
Luxor 25°C 41°C not coastal
Aswan 27°C 42°C not coastal
Hurghada 26°C 36°C 26°C
Sharm el-Sheikh 27°C 37°C 26°C

The night (min) and day (max) columns are 30 year averages, not a forecast for one particular week: night is the average low just before dawn, day is the average early to mid afternoon high. A short heatwave can push Luxor or Aswan a few degrees past these figures, which is exactly why we build June itineraries around the cooler hours rather than around a single predicted number.

Sea temperature and swimming conditions in June

The Red Sea reaches 26°C at both Hurghada and Sharm el Sheikh in June, warm enough to swim and dive without a wetsuit, and visibility stays in the 20 to 30 metre range that makes the reefs off Giftun, Mahmya and Ras Mohammed worth the trip on its own. Coral colour and marine life are unaffected by the summer heat above the waterline, so June ranks among the better months for diving and snorkelling even though it is a weak month for sightseeing on land. Anyone building a Red Sea leg around the reefs should look at our guide to the best Red Sea dive sites before choosing a base.

Rain, humidity and daylight hours in June

Rain is a non event across the whole country in June: Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh all record effectively 0mm for the month, so a wet day is not something to plan around anywhere on a standard itinerary, and there is no rainy season equivalent to worry about the way there would be in many other summer destinations. Humidity, by contrast, varies sharply with geography, running driest in the deep desert around Aswan and highest in Cairo, where the Nile delta's moisture still reaches the capital even at the height of summer.

  • Cairo: around 48% humidity, the most humid of the five, with roughly 12 hours of sunshine a day.
  • Luxor: a dry 27% humidity, 12 hours of sunshine, and the least cloud cover of the year.
  • Aswan: the driest of all at around 16% humidity, 12 hours of sunshine, and the sharpest day to night temperature swing.
  • Hurghada: around 32% humidity, 11.5 hours of sunshine, with a stronger prevailing wind off the sea.
  • Sharm el-Sheikh: around 29% humidity and roughly 13 hours of sunshine, the most of any city on this list.

Daylight runs long everywhere in June: around 14 hours from dawn to dusk in Cairo, close to 13 hours 40 minutes in Luxor and Aswan, and around 13 hours 50 to 13 hours 55 minutes on the Red Sea coast, since the summer solstice falls on 21 June. That gives an early sunrise for temple visits and a late one for an evening felucca or a sundowner on deck.

The case for an Egypt holiday in June 2026

June is the cheapest month of the year to travel: hotel and cruise rates drop well below the December to February peak, and availability is easy at short notice. The Red Sea is at its best for diving and snorkelling, tourist numbers are low enough that private visits to the major sites are genuinely possible, and evenings on the deck of a cruise stay warm and pleasant rather than uncomfortable. The heat is real, so June rewards travellers who adapt the itinerary rather than trying to run a normal season's programme in the summer sun.

On the Nile: a June cruise is worth weighing up if you want the Luxor to Aswan route without the January crowds. Our advice is to pick a small dahabeya cruise (8 to 12 cabins) over one of the large motor ships: the pace is slower, the deck stays shaded and the experience feels far closer to the real Egypt.

Cairo and Giza: see the pyramids at opening time, then retreat indoors for the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) or the Coptic and Islamic quarters of Historic Cairo. Give the capital no fewer than three to four days so the heat never forces a rushed day.

Red Sea: at 26°C, Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh are both in peak condition. Maximum visibility, living reefs, and diving and snorkelling belong at the centre of the programme rather than as an afterthought.

Disadvantages to be aware of in June

The heat is the honest drawback: 40°C plus afternoons in Luxor and Aswan are punishing outdoors, so archaeological visits need to finish before 10 a.m. and resume, if at all, only after 4 p.m. A multi day desert safari is not something we recommend in June, and a Nile cruise only makes sense on a boat with reliable air conditioning and a shaded sun deck. Families travelling with young children are generally better off on the Red Sea coast than in the deep south, where midday heat leaves little room for outdoor activity. To plan around these constraints rather than around a generic itinerary, message our SEV team on WhatsApp and we will adapt the programme to June's conditions.

How June Compares to May and July

May, June, July and August all sit inside Egypt's hot season, but the heat builds gradually rather than arriving all at once. May tends to run three to four degrees cooler than June, particularly inland at Luxor and Aswan, which makes it the last genuinely comfortable stretch before full summer sets in. July and August then push a degree or two hotter again on the Red Sea coast, though the Nile valley's own ceiling changes far less: 41 to 42°C in June is already close to what Luxor and Aswan reach in high summer. What actually shifts most between May and August is not the single daily maximum so much as the number of consecutive extreme days and the humidity on the coast, which climbs through July and August as the sea itself keeps warming. For travellers deciding which summer month to book, June is usually the month that balances the lowest prices of the year against a climate that has not yet reached its August peak.

June in Egypt: the itineraries we suggest

"Essential" itinerary (8 days)

Four days in Cairo (pyramids at opening time, GEM, Saqqara, an early morning at Khan el-Khalili) followed by four days on the Red Sea at Hurghada or Sharm el-Sheikh, chosen for the diving and the pool. This keeps the Nile valley's harshest heat out of the programme entirely while still covering the pyramids and the museum.

"Complete" itinerary (12 to 15 days)

Cairo (3 days), a Nile cruise on an air conditioned dahabeya (5 days), then the Red Sea at Hurghada (4 days) before flying home from Cairo. Our tailor made Egypt tour packages can be built around this shape or adjusted stop by stop.

"Red Sea prime" itinerary (7 to 10 days)

A direct flight to Hurghada (HRG) or Sharm el-Sheikh (SSH) for a seaside stay built around diving trips to Giftun, Mahmya and Ras Mohammed, with the option to add a short three day Cairo extension either side of the flight.

What to pack for Egypt in June

Light, loose clothing in cotton or linen, a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses, SPF 50 sunscreen, closed shoes for temple floors that get very hot underfoot, a scarf or shawl for mosques and churches, and a refillable water bottle, since dehydration is the real June risk rather than sunburn alone. Evenings on a cruise deck or by the coast rarely need more than a light layer. Our full Egypt packing checklist covers the rest, season by season.

Average budget for an Egypt trip in June 2026

June sits at the cheap end of the year: expect notably lower hotel and cruise rates than the December to February peak, with easy availability even close to departure. As a rough guide, a 10 day trip combining Cairo, a Nile cruise and a few nights on the Red Sea in 4 star hotels, with private transfers, an English speaking guide and domestic flights (Cairo to Aswan, Aswan to Luxor, Cairo to Hurghada or Sharm) typically runs from around £1,100 to £1,900 per person; a 5 star trip on a luxury dahabeya runs higher again. International flights into Cairo also tend to sit below the winter peak in June, since airlines cut fares to fill seats through the quiet months, which adds to the overall saving on top of the lower hotel and cruise rates. Our real Nile cruise prices for 2026 guide breaks the cruise portion down by boat category, and our team refines any quote to your dates on WhatsApp.

Safety and getting around in Egypt in June

The established tourist circuit, Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh, presents no particular cause for concern in June beyond the heat itself; our 2026 safety guide goes into detail on the whole country. Getting around means private, air conditioned cars for every transfer, with an English speaking driver available on request, plus short domestic flights, roughly an hour from Cairo to Luxor and around ninety minutes to Aswan, that our team books as part of the itinerary rather than leaving you to arrange separately.

Egypt e-visa for June 2026 travellers

Most nationalities travelling to Egypt need a visa, and the simplest route for a June trip is the e-visa applied for online before departure: a single entry e-visa costs 30 USD and is normally issued within a few business days, well ahead of a June holiday if you apply a few weeks out. Our Egypt e-visa and visa on arrival guide covers the application steps and the alternative visa on arrival option in full.

Frequently Asked Questions About Egypt in June 2026

How hot does Egypt get in June?

Egypt runs hot and dry in June: Cairo sees 22 to 35°C, Luxor and Aswan both push past 40°C by day, and the Red Sea resorts stay a little cooler at 26 to 37°C with a sea breeze. Rain is effectively absent everywhere, and the sky stays clear day after day, so the heat, not cloud or rain, is the one variable to plan around.

Is a Nile cruise realistic in June?

Yes, with two conditions: choose a boat with reliable air conditioning and a shaded sun deck, and shift sightseeing stops to the early morning before the heat peaks. Our SEV team favours the small 8 to 12 cabin dahabeya year round for its character, and in June the smaller boat's better airflow and shade make it an even more comfortable choice than a large motor ship.

Is the Red Sea swimmable in June?

Yes, comfortably: the Red Sea reaches 26°C at both Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh in June, warm enough for swimming and diving without a wetsuit. Underwater visibility stays strong at 20 to 30 metres, and the reefs near Giftun, Mahmya and Ras Mohammed are all within easy reach of the main resorts.

Does it rain in Egypt in June?

No, effectively never: Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh all record close to 0mm of rain in June. A shower is not something to build a contingency day around anywhere on the standard tourist circuit during this month.

How much should you budget for 10 days in Egypt in June?

A 10 day trip combining Cairo, a Nile cruise and the Red Sea in 4 star hotels, with private transfers, an English speaking guide and domestic flights included, typically runs around £1,100 to £1,900 per person in June, which is the cheapest booking window of the year. A 5 star trip on a luxury dahabeya costs more; our team quotes the exact figure once we know your dates and preferences.

Are there many tourists in Egypt in June?

No: June sits in the low season, well below the January to March peak, so major sites see far shorter queues and private visits become genuinely possible at the busiest monuments. Our SEV team still schedules the Nile valley sites for first thing in the morning, both for the light and to beat the day's heat rather than any crowd.

What is the best time of day to visit the pyramids in June?

Opening time, 7 to 8 a.m., is by far the best window: the temperature is still bearable, the light is good for photographs, and the plateau has not yet filled with coach groups arriving mid morning. By midday the Giza plateau offers almost no shade, so a June visit that starts late is a visit cut short.

Is Egypt safe to visit in June?

Yes, the established tourist circuit of Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh carries no particular safety concern in June beyond the practical need to manage heat exposure. Our 2026 safety guide covers the country region by region for anyone planning a route beyond the main circuit.

What should you pack for Egypt in June?

Light cotton or linen clothing, a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses, high factor sunscreen, closed shoes for hot temple floors, a scarf for religious sites, and a refillable water bottle to manage the day's heat. A light layer covers the rare cool evening on a cruise deck or by the coast.

Do you need a visa for Egypt in June 2026?

Most nationalities do, and the e-visa is the simplest route: a single entry e-visa costs 30 USD, is applied for online before departure, and is normally issued within a few business days. Visa on arrival remains an option at the airport for eligible nationalities, though applying online ahead of a June trip avoids any queue on arrival.

Is June a good month for families to visit Egypt?

It works better on the Red Sea coast than in the Nile valley: Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh keep children entertained in the water while avoiding the worst of the midday heat, whereas Luxor and Aswan's 40°C plus afternoons leave little room for outdoor activity with young children. A Cairo and Red Sea combination, rather than a full Nile valley itinerary, is what we generally recommend for families travelling in June.

What is the sea temperature in Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh in June?

Both resorts sit at around 26°C in June, comfortable for swimming and diving without a wetsuit, with visibility in the 20 to 30 metre range that makes June one of the better months for time in the water even though it is a weaker month for sightseeing on land.

Is June a good time to visit the Grand Egyptian Museum?

Yes, arguably better than the winter peak: the Grand Egyptian Museum's galleries are fully air conditioned, so June's outdoor heat is not a factor once inside, and lower overall visitor numbers in June mean shorter queues at the entrance and around the Tutankhamun galleries. Pairing a morning at the museum with an afternoon indoors or by the hotel pool works well as a June day in Cairo.
