Nile Cruise in Dahabeya 6 Days: Traditional Sailboat Esna-Aswan
No other way of travelling the river comes close to our Nile Dahabeya cruise for intimacy: a Nile cruise 6 days / 5 nights on a traditional egypt sailboat between Esna and Aswan, carrying just 8 to 12 guests. Where the big ships are noisy and packed, the dahabeya nil travels mostly under sail, ties up at private islands and shows you the Egypt that 19th-century travellers such as Flaubert, Agatha Christie and Pierre Loti first fell for.
What makes this nil in Dahabeya special is something few people ever get: a Nile cruise without engine, with nothing but quiet, water lapping the hull, the call to prayer drifting from villages at first light and children racing along the bank to wave at the sail. Every dahabiya 5 nights we offer has no more than 8 to 12 cabins, each with its own bathroom, mains electricity and unobtrusive air conditioning. Comfort, without any showing off.
Our esna aswan dahabeya route concentrates on places the big ships simply cannot get to: El-Kab, an exceptionally rare predynastic settlement, the old pharaonic quarries at Gebel Silsileh, and the sandbanks strung between Edfu and Kom Ombo. Along the way you take in the superb Edfu temple, Egypt's best-preserved, and Kom Ombo's twin temple to Sobek and Haroëris, all in the stillness of a true nile cruise beyond the reach of any large vessel.
Priced from £920, Essential gives you 5 nights aboard in a standard double cabin, gourmet full board, your own English-speaking Egyptologist guide and every visit. Signature (£1,150) moves you up to a superior cabin with its own balcony and adds a private outing to El-Kab. Prestige (£1,530) is the luxury dahabeya cruise, with a panoramic suite and the option of a private dahabeya for families or groups of 6 to 8 who want the sailboat to themselves. To keep things truly private we cap every boat at dahabeya 8 passengers, or 12 at most on the larger vessels.

El-Kab, the Secret Site the Big Ships Sail Straight Past

Once known as Nekheb, El-Kab ranks among Egypt's earliest predynastic settlements, lived in without a break from 3200 BC, a full 700 years before the pyramids went up. Here you find the temple of Nekhbet, the vulture goddess who watched over Upper Egypt, rock-cut tombs of senior New Kingdom officials and vast mudbrick walls that have stood for 5,000 years.
Why don't the big liners go there?
- El-Kab sits on the east bank between Edfu and Esna, well away from any modern quay, which makes it far too hazardous for a deep-keeled boat carrying 150+ people.
- Getting in means a four-wheel-drive track, so there is no way of landing 200 tourists at once for a single visit.
- Our dahabeya moors right up against the bank; a 10 minute ride by private cart puts you at the temple steps.
What you see exclusively
You see the tomb of Ahmose, the general who served the pharaoh that drove out the Hyksos around 1550 BC, the temple of Nekhbet as rebuilt by Thutmose III, the small rock-cut speos of Amenhotep III, and a sweep of the Nile that nobody else gets to admire. On Signature (£1,150) an Egyptologist leads a private 1h30 visit to this rare place; on Essential the site is described as you pass it from the deck.
Detailed Program: 6 Days Esna-Aswan

Day 1 - Embarkation in Esna
You reach Luxor late afternoon, by your flight into Egypt or by transfer from Cairo, then drive 1 hour to Esna. SEV books and includes every internal flight. Aboard, the captain greets you with a welcome drink, you settle into your cabin, the boat clears the Esna lock at sunset and a gourmet dinner follows.
Day 2 - Navigation & El-Kab
Sail through the morning, then explore El-Kab: the Nekhbet temple, Ahmose's tomb and the mudbrick walls. After lunch aboard, the boat carries on towards Edfu, and the evening brings Egyptian storytelling on the top deck.
Day 3 - Edfu Temple
A guided tour of edfu temple, built for Horus and the most complete in Egypt, its hieroglyphs still crisp. Back aboard, you sail on to Gebel Silsileh, with the chance of a swim from a sandy island.
Day 4: From Gebel Silsileh to Kom Ombo
The morning goes to kom ombo silsileh: New Kingdom sandstone quarries, shrines cut into the rock and stelae left by Ramesses II. In the afternoon you visit Kom Ombo's twin temple of Sobek and Haroëris, then dine at anchor beneath the stars.
Day 5 - Arrival in Aswan
The last stretch to Aswan is sailed at dawn for the finest light. Then Philae's Isis temple (felucca crossing included), the Aswan High Dam and the unfinished obelisk, before a farewell dinner aboard.
Day 6 - Disembarkation
Breakfast on board then disembarkation. Transfer to Aswan airport - your flight to Egypt continues at your convenience (Aswan-Cairo domestic flight organized by SEV on request). End of our services. Abu Simbel extension option (+£190).

FAQ: Nile cruise in Dahabeya

Which dahabeya do you use for this program?
Depending on the date we place you on one of several 4-5★ partner dahabeyas: Meroe, Oberoi Zahra (when available), Nour El Nil or Sonesta Dahabeya. Each has air-conditioned cabins, private bathrooms and a panoramic deck; the boat is confirmed at booking.
Is there electricity and air conditioning on board?
They do. Each partner dahabeya runs 24-hour electricity from a silent overnight generator, with air conditioning controlled in every cabin. Today's traditional egypt sailboat pairs the character of the 19th century with the comfort of the 21st.
What if the wind doesn't blow?
Every partner dahabeya carries a small, unobtrusive auxiliary engine. For roughly 30% of the voyage we move under sail alone, typically mornings, evenings and breezy days; the rest is a mix of sail and motor so the itinerary holds. So it is a genuine Nile cruise without engine most of the way, with the reassurance of reaching a safe mooring on time.
Can the dahabeya be privatized for a family group?
It is. A private dahabeya is available on the Prestige package for parties of 6 adults or more, with the supplement quoted individually. It suits a milestone birthday, a honeymoon or a family gathering of 6 to 10.
Are the meals good on board?
Superb. Everything is cooked to order rather than served from a buffet, with produce bought fresh daily, an Egyptian chef schooled in French technique and Egyptian wines included. Vegetarian and gluten-free menus on request beforehand.
Can we add Abu Simbel?
It can be, from Aswan once the cruise ends. A full-day road excursion (5 hours there and back) takes you to the two immense temples of Ramses II and Nefertari, at a supplement of +£190/pers with lunch and guide included. Book it when you confirm the trip.
Is this program suitable for families with children?
They are, from 8 years old; broad decks and no crowds make the dahabeya calm and safe. For families with under-6s we suggest our Smile of the Sphinx circuit instead, which keeps sailing days short.
What is the best season?
October to April, with mild 22-28°C temperatures. March-April and October-November are busiest, so reserve 3-4 months ahead. Skip July-August, when it tops 40°C.
How does boarding take place in Esna?
We arrange your arrival in Luxor by air or by train from Cairo, then a private 1 hour drive to Esna, where you are met on the dahabeya's quay. Boarding opens at 3pm with a welcome drink. The captain times the Esna lock for sunset, when the light is loveliest.
Cancellation policy and reservation?
Our cancellation conditions vary with how far before departure you cancel, and we set them out in full alongside your quote. Cancellation insurance is strongly advised, available from £40/pers.
What Our Travelers Are Saying

“5 nights aboard a dahabeya on the Nile: the finest trip I have ever taken. We had El-Kab entirely to ourselves that day, ate dinner on deck at anchor and watched the sun rise over Kom Ombo. Our guide Ahmed was captivating, and Signature fitted our budget perfectly. »
- Béatrice L., Nantes, March 2026 (Signature formula)“We took the whole dahabeya for our party of 7 friends, all retired. Prestige with the panoramic suite, and a chef aboard who catered to every request we made. Mornings gliding along in total silence under sail will stay with us. The SEV team answered on WhatsApp within 15 minutes, so no stress at all. »
- Gérard & Jeannine R., Toulon, February 2026 (Prestige + privatization)“We nearly went with TUI Kenoz, which was 30% dearer and used a 24 passenger boat. SEV's 12 passenger dahabeya gave us something quite different: real time with the guide, gourmet food and El-Kab. £920 a head for that degree of intimacy cannot be beaten. »
