The 2026 Egypt tourism map reveals a country far richer than most travelers expect when they arrive. Its 1,010,000 km2 (about 390,000 sq mi, roughly 1.5 times the size of Texas) is organized around the Nile in the center, the Western Desert to the west, the Red Sea to the east, the Sinai to the northeast, and the Mediterranean to the north. For an American traveler, understanding this geography ahead of time saves 2 to 3 days of itinerary optimization and avoids the classic mistakes (underestimating the Cairo-Hurghada distances, confusing the Sinai with the Red Sea coast, assuming Luxor is near Cairo). Our SEV team walks you through the 2026 Egypt tourist map here, with its 6 key regions, the real distances between cities, and 4 recommended itineraries based on the length of your stay.

Overview - Egypt's 6 tourist regions
The Egypt map can be read as 6 major tourist zones, each with its own identity, climate, and headline sites. Understanding how they are laid out helps you structure your trip and avoid pointless travel between distant regions.
| Region | Capital | Highlight sites | Ideal duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cairo and Lower Egypt | Cairo | Giza Pyramids, GEM, Saqqara, Khan el-Khalili | 2-4 days |
| Nile Valley | Luxor | Karnak, Valley of the Kings, Philae, Abu Simbel | 4-7 days |
| Red Sea | Hurghada | Hurghada, Marsa Alam, El Gouna, Giftun Island | 3-7 days |
| Sinai | Sharm el-Sheikh | Sharm, Dahab, Mount Sinai, Saint Catherine | 3-5 days |
| Western Desert | Bahariya | White Desert, Black Desert, Siwa, Crystal Mountain | 3-5 days |
| Mediterranean | Alexandria | Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Citadel of Qaitbay, Pompey | 1-2 days |
The 2026 map of Egypt for tourism highlights a striking demographic imbalance - 95% of the population lives on 4% of the land, along the Nile and the delta. The rest is desert. That is why all of the major pharaonic sites line up along the Nile, from Cairo down to south of Aswan.
Cairo and Lower Egypt on the map

Cairo holds a strategic position on the map of Egypt - at the tip of the Nile delta, 200 km (124 mi) from the Mediterranean and 18 km (11 mi) east of the Giza Pyramids. It is the largest metropolis in Africa, with 22 million people in its urban area. Every trip to Egypt begins or ends here thanks to Cairo International Airport (CAI).
On the regional map, Lower Egypt (a geographic paradox - "Lower" because it is the north, where the Nile "descends" toward the Mediterranean) brings together:
- Giza Plateau - 18 km (11 mi) west of central Cairo, home to the 3 pyramids (Khufu, Khafre, Menkaure), the Sphinx, and the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), open since November 2025.
- Saqqara - 30 km (19 mi) south of Cairo, site of the Step Pyramid of Djoser (the oldest in the world, 2,670 BC) and the funerary complex of Memphis.
- Memphis - 25 km (16 mi) south, the ancient capital of the Old Kingdom, with palace ruins and the monumental statues of Ramesses II.
- Dahshur - 40 km (25 mi) south, the Red Pyramid and the Bent Pyramid of Sneferu, a less crowded alternative to the Giza Pyramids.
- Alexandria - 220 km (137 mi) northwest on the Mediterranean, reachable in 2h30 by train or car (read our Alexandria shore excursion guide).
Key distances and travel times from Cairo:
- Central Cairo (Tahrir) ↔ Giza Pyramids - 18 km (11 mi) / 35-75 min
- Central Cairo ↔ GEM - 18 km (11 mi) / 35-75 min
- Central Cairo ↔ Saqqara - 30 km (19 mi) / 50 min
- Central Cairo ↔ CAI Airport - 22 km (14 mi) / 30-60 min
- Central Cairo ↔ Alexandria - 220 km (137 mi) / 2h30 by train or car
The Nile Valley - from Luxor to Aswan

The Egypt map clearly shows the southern axis of tourism - the Nile Valley between Luxor and Aswan, 230 km (143 mi) apart, concentrates the majority of pharaonic temples and tombs. This is where the Nile cruises take place, lasting 3, 4, or 7 nights depending on the boat and the direction of travel.
Major sites lined up from north to south along the Nile:
- Luxor (679 km / 422 mi south of Cairo) - LXR airport, the temples of Karnak and Luxor, Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, Temple of Hatshepsut, Colossi of Memnon, Medinet Habu.
- Edfu (115 km / 71 mi south of Luxor) - the best-preserved Temple of Horus in Egypt, a must-stop on the cruises.
- Kom Ombo (180 km / 112 mi south of Luxor) - a double temple dedicated to Sobek (crocodile) and Haroeris (falcon), with a museum of mummified crocodiles.
- Esna (60 km / 37 mi south of Luxor) - the Temple of Khnum, a strategic lock for cruise boats.
- Aswan (230 km / 143 mi south of Luxor) - ASW airport, the Temple of Philae on Agilkia Island, Elephantine Island, the Aga Khan Mausoleum, the High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk.
- Abu Simbel (280 km / 174 mi south of Aswan) - the two colossal temples of Ramesses II and Nefertari, reachable by convoy (4h by road or 45 min by plane).
The Red Sea - beach resorts on the map

On the eastern side of the Egypt map, the Red Sea stretches over 1,050 km (652 mi) of coastline between the Gulf of Suez (north) and the Sudanese border (south). The beach resorts cluster along 250 km (155 mi) around Hurghada (read our visit Hurghada 2026 guide).
From north to south:
- El Gouna (25 km / 16 mi north of Hurghada) - an upscale resort built on artificial islands, with golf, a marina, and a European vibe.
- Hurghada (center) - HRG airport, the largest resort on the Red Sea, with the beaches of Sahl Hasheesh and Makadi Bay to the south.
- Safaga (60 km / 37 mi south of Hurghada) - a diving resort and a port of call for Mediterranean cruises.
- El Quseir (140 km / 87 mi south of Hurghada) - a historic fishing village with well-preserved diving.
- Marsa Alam (290 km / 180 mi south of Hurghada) - RMF airport, dolphin diving (Dolphin House), turtles at Abu Dabbab, pristine coral reefs.
On the other side of the Gulf of Suez, in the Sinai (see the dedicated section below), the resorts of Sharm el-Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba, and Taba round out the Red Sea beach offering, with a slightly warmer climate and the Ras Mohamed reef, one of the most beautiful dive spots in the world.

The Sinai and Mount Moses

The Sinai appears on the map as a triangular peninsula of 60,000 km2 (23,000 sq mi) between mainland Egypt (Suez to the west) and Israel/Jordan (to the east). It is a region apart - a more continental climate, spectacular geology (red granite mountains), and a strong biblical history (Mount Moses, Saint Catherine's Monastery).
- Sharm el-Sheikh - SSH airport, the largest resort in the Sinai, Ras Mohamed National Park (diving), Naama Bay (nightlife).
- Dahab (90 km / 56 mi north of Sharm) - a laid-back, sporty village, the Blue Hole for free diving, a backpacker vibe.
- Nuweiba and Taba (175 and 215 km / 109 and 134 mi north of Sharm) - border resorts with Israel, ferry to Aqaba (Jordan).
- Mount Sinai (Mount Moses, 2,285 m / 7,497 ft) - a nighttime hike for sunrise at the summit, a mystical experience.
- Saint Catherine's Monastery - at the foot of Mount Sinai, the oldest working Orthodox monastery (6th century), with a library of 6,000 manuscripts.
Important to know on the map - the southern Sinai (Sharm, Dahab) is secure and built for tourism. The northern Sinai (toward Israel) should still be avoided for security reasons (read our Egypt safety guide 2026).
Western Desert and oases

West of the Nile, the Western Desert (sometimes called the Libyan Desert) covers 681,000 km2 (263,000 sq mi) - two-thirds of Egypt. On the map, it is an almost empty expanse dotted with 5 major oases laid out from north to south:
- Siwa (550 km / 342 mi west of Cairo, near the Libyan border) - a unique Berber oasis, Cleopatra's Spring, the Temple of Amun where Alexander the Great was confirmed as pharaoh.
- Bahariya (370 km / 230 mi southwest of Cairo) - the gateway to the White Desert, the golden mummies of the local museum, hot springs.
- Farafra (180 km / 112 mi south of Bahariya) - a white village, the launch point for the Black Desert and Crystal Mountain.
- Dakhla (310 km / 193 mi south of Farafra) - a green oasis with dunes and the medieval mud-brick villages of Al-Qasr.
- Kharga (190 km / 118 mi east of Dakhla) - the administrative oasis, the Coptic cemetery of Bagawat, the Temple of Hibis.

Mediterranean and Nile delta
North of Cairo, the Nile delta spreads out 240 km (149 mi) long and 200 km (124 mi) wide all the way to the Mediterranean. It is the most fertile farmland in Egypt. For travelers, two cities stand out:
- Alexandria (220 km / 137 mi northwest of Cairo) - founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC, Egypt's second city. Bibliotheca Alexandrina (a modern replica from 2002), the Citadel of Qaitbay (on the site of the ancient lighthouse), the Catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa, Pompey's Pillar.
- Port Said (220 km / 137 mi northeast of Cairo) - the northern entrance to the Suez Canal, a port of call for Mediterranean cruises. Belle epoque colonial architecture.

FAQ - Frequently asked questions about the map of Egypt
How many days do you need to see the essentials of Egypt?
A minimum of 7 days for Cairo + an express Nile Cruise (3-4 nights). 10-14 days to add the Red Sea or the desert. 21 days to explore all of the main regions in depth. With fewer than 5 days, stick to Cairo only.
Which airport city should you choose to arrive in Egypt?
Cairo (CAI) - the most connected, with direct flights from major US hubs (often via a European or Gulf carrier). Hurghada (HRG) - charter and connecting flights from many cities. Sharm el-Sheikh (SSH) - mainly charter flights. Marsa Alam (RMF) - seasonal flights. Luxor (LXR) - charter flights for cruises, sometimes connecting from the US.
What is the distance between Cairo and the Pyramids?
18 km (11 mi) from central Cairo (Tahrir Square) to the Giza Plateau. Budget 35 to 75 minutes by taxi or Uber depending on traffic. The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is 2 km (1.2 mi) east of the Pyramids, on the same road.
How long does it take to cross Egypt from north to south?
From Alexandria (Mediterranean) to Abu Simbel (Sudanese border), figure 1,400 km (870 mi) in a straight line. By car, 18 to 22 hours of driving via Cairo and the Nile valley. By plane with a connection - about 4 hours of total flight time.
Is the Sinai on the same map as Hurghada?
On the same map, yes, but these are two distinct regions separated by the Gulf of Suez. Hurghada is on the mainland coast (the west shore of the Red Sea). Sharm el-Sheikh is on the Sinai Peninsula (the east shore). To get from Hurghada to Sharm, you need either a ferry (8h via Suez) or a domestic flight (1h via Cairo).
Is there a free official tourist map?
Yes, the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism hands out the 2026 Egypt tourist map for free (a foldable A2 format). It is available at the airports, at the Cairo tourist offices, and as a downloadable PDF on egypt.travel. Our SEV team also gives a personalized version to every client during the arrival briefing.
Do you need a separate visa for the Sinai?
No, the standard Egyptian visa covers the entire country. US citizens can get the e-visa online at visa2egypt.gov.eg for $25 (or a $25 visa on arrival). That said, for the southern Sinai only (Sharm, Dahab, Mount Sinai) without visiting the rest of the country, you can use the free Sinai-Only Permit, valid for 14 days - but it does not allow access to the Pyramids.
