Sharm El-Sheikh has only existed since 1968. A handful of huts. Then the government discovered the coral. Boom. Today? 60,000 residents. Hotels everywhere. Legendary diving. And you, you're torn: Naama Bay or Souk? All-inclusive or boutique? Diving here or somewhere else? This guide cuts through it.
I first set foot in Sharm in 2019. Three days to test the waters. Then I came back. Then again. Now? I send dozens of American travelers there every month. I know where you'll win. I know where you'll strike out. This guide answers you straight.
In 90 seconds: Naama Bay = polished tourist beaches, boutiques, upscale restaurants. Souk (Old Sharm) = loud market, grilled fish, real culture. Ras Mohammed = spectacular coral caves 20 minutes away by boat. Diving runs $55-85 per site. Once you arrive in Egypt, SEV arranges your domestic flight from Cairo to Sharm el-Sheikh - a swift one-hour hop that gets you straight to the Red Sea. All-inclusive 5-star: $130-195/night. Go February-March or October-November. Otherwise: punishing heat.
Naama Bay: Smooth Beaches, Oiled-Up Tourism

Naama Bay is the reason people come. Fine sand. Clear water. No fish carcasses. No plastic. The 5-star hotels tower over the bay like white castles.
You pick a hotel. You almost never leave the property. Pool in the morning. Diving in the afternoon. Dinner at the resort restaurant. That's it. It's efficient. It's smooth. It's no-surprises. For some couples, it's perfect. For curious travelers? Boring by day three.
Where to Stay in Naama Bay
The Hilton Sharks Bay sits right on the front line. Private beach. $160-215 a night in low season. In high season (February)? $300-380. Pool access included.
The Sofitel Legend Old Town wins you over if you want charm plus style. $150-185/night. Breakfast included. Bay view from the balcony. One American guest told me: "This is where I'd come back to die." It's over the top, but honest.
Insider tip: All-inclusive hotels post a price. The real cost? Wildly overpriced alcohol at the beach ($11 for a beer). Marked-up excursions. Avoid the traps. Pay for the "drinks included" package up front (+$22/day, it's worth it).
Restaurants in Naama Bay
Farsha Cafe sits up high. Splendid view over the bay. Hummus, falafel, grilled octopus. $16-27 per person. The low tables, the cushions, the laid-back atmosphere. This is where English-speaking travelers eat when they get tired of the hotel.
Blue Beach Club: fresh fish straight off the boat. Sea bass, sea bream. $9 a kilo. Grilled to order. Lemon sauce. White rice. Cold beer. $22-32 for two. Book for 6pm, eat at 6:30pm. Otherwise it's full.

Souk (Old Sharm): Where the Real Egypt Comes Alive

Leaving Naama Bay for the Souk. It's like going from the movies to live theater. Suddenly the noise. Vendors call out to you. The smells. Grilled fish. Cumin. Mint. Cat urine (yes, really).
The market winds through three narrow streets. Cramped stalls. Chaotic displays. Silk, jewelry, spices, rotting fish. The posted prices are lies. Haggle. That's the game. A scarf marked $32? Offer $9. Wait for the counter. Land at $13. You both won.
In short, the Souk is the beating heart. Tourists? Rare. Egyptians? Everywhere. You eat what Egyptians eat. At 4pm, in a tiny diner, you devour ful medames (fava beans boiled in oil) with warm khobz bread. $1. Divine.
The Fish Market: The Pulsing Core
5am. The fishermen arrive. The nets shiver. Sea bream, mullet, barracuda. Vendors shout the prices. "Fresh! Fresh! Buy now!" You point at a fish. They prep it on the spot. Scales, guts, head. Then it's grilled to order.
Good to know: You only pay for the fish. The local cook grills it for free if you buy bread and a drink from him. That's the arrangement. A whole sea bream = $7-9. Bread = $0.50. Mango juice = $1.50. Breakfast for two = $17.
Where to Stay in the Souk
The 3-star hotels are everywhere. No pool. No guaranteed AC. But? $33-55/night. And soul. The Sharm Al Sheesh is tiny. Egyptian owner. Tea on arrival. Stories from old Sharm. $43/night, breakfast included.
Are you after authenticity? Go to the Souk. Are you after rest? Naama Bay. But honestly? Do both. Three days in Naama (diving included). Two days in the Souk (the real Egypt). That's the ideal balance.
Ras Mohammed: Diving's Underwater Temple

Ras Mohammed lies 20 minutes by boat from Naama Bay. It's a marine national park. The coral explodes there in impossible colors. Electric blue. Neon yellow. Bright orange. Then the creatures appear. Moray eels. Rays. Angelfish.
Divers love Ras Mohammed. Snorkelers too (you can go without a tank). Three sites dominate: Shark Reef, Yolanda Reef, and the Caves. Each one offers something different.
Shark Reef: The Classic
Shark Reef. Don't panic. The sharks don't eat divers. You're just a clumsy fish to them. The reef slopes down gently. You'll see reef sharks (harmless). Also turtles. Plate corals. Coral gardens that wave like green grass.
Max depth: 80 ft. Duration: 50 minutes. Price: $60 with tank. Open-water certification required. Otherwise, go snorkeling ($27). The water is so clear you'll see the coral without going down.
Diver tip: Show up at the launch by 7am. You dive when the water is calm. No swell. No crazy current. The afternoons? Chaotic. The waves stir up the sediment. Visibility drops.
Yolanda Reef: Spectacular Wreck
The wreck of the MS Yolanda lies at 50 ft. A cargo ship sunk in 1980. The coral has coated it. The fish have colonized it. You glide between the holds. You explore the cabins. It's underwater archaeology.
Drop-off: 100 ft. Experience required. Price: $80. An unforgettable dive. The photos are spectacular. American divers love this spot.
The Caves: Guarded Secret
The Caves lie farther out. Less touristy. You enter cavities. You'll surface into an underground chamber filled with air (yes, natural air pockets). It's Jules Verne underwater.
Depth: 60-80 ft. Possible current (check with the instructors). Price: $85. Most dives here are done by experienced couples or guided groups only.
Diving in Egypt: Ras Mohammed vs other spots
Ras Mohammed is spectacular. But comparable to Hurghada or Dahab. Which one to pick based on your level and your dates? Our team recommends.

How to Get to Sharm El-Sheikh

Once you land in Egypt on your flight to Egypt, the fastest way to reach Sharm el-Sheikh is by domestic flight from Cairo - about one hour in the air. SEV arranges this domestic connection for you as part of your trip, so you step off your international arrival and into a seamless, VIP-handled transfer straight to the Red Sea.
You usually land around 10pm. The airport? Modern and calm. Customs: 15 minutes. Grab your bags. Buy a visa ($25 in cash, requested on arrival or obtained online beforehand). Then transfer to the hotel. Figure $33-50 for a private taxi.
Travel tip: Get travel insurance for your trip. The visa? US passport holders qualify for the Egypt e-visa at visa2egypt.gov.eg ($25) before you go, or you can buy it on arrival. Passport valid for at least 6 months. After that, it's simple.
When to Go: Climate and Seasons

February-March. October-November. These two windows are perfect. Temperature: 77-82°F. Sea water: 73-75°F. Sun without the burn. As a result, every hotel fills up. Prices spike.
May-September? Stifling. 95-104°F in the shade. The water heats up too. It's humid. Maddening. Travelers who go in July come back wiped out. They curse it.
January? Cool (68-73°F). Some people love it. Others find the sea "cold for diving." It's relative. You decide.
An Extra Day: Dahab as a Side Trip
Got 6-7 days in Sharm? Give one to Dahab. It's 50 miles north. A spectacular coastal road. You drive 1h30. Suddenly the landscape shifts. Dahab is mellow. Backpacker vibe. Fine sandy beaches.
Out there, the Blue Hole awaits you. It's a fascinating underwater sinkhole. Explore the Three Pools. Eat grilled fish at the water's edge. Head back to Sharm by 5pm. Day rates: $65-85 on an organized tour. You can rent a car ($43/day) and go on your own.
Or combine the two in a bigger trip. Our Dahab guide explains why it's different from Sharm. Put simply: Sharm = luxury, Dahab = soul.
