Egypt Weather May 2026: Temperatures, What to Pack and Do

Jun 26 2026

Here is our Egypt weather May briefing for 2026, built for British travellers deciding when to book: the start of proper Egyptian summer in the Nile Valley, the lowest hotel and cruise rates of the year, a Red Sea that has warmed into the mid twenties, and the country's estimated Eid al-Adha holiday falling right at the end of the month. Our Cairo based SEV team has put together bespoke Egyptian holidays since 2020, working with English speaking guides, hotels we have inspected in person, and itineraries that pair the capital with a Nile cruise and a few days on the coast. Below is the full city by city breakdown, what the month is good and less good for, what to pack, and what a May holiday tends to cost.

Egypt Weather May 2026: The Quick Answer

Cairo runs roughly 20 to 32°C, Luxor 23 to 38°C, Aswan 24 to 38°C, Hurghada 22 to 32°C with the sea at 25°C, and Sharm el-Sheikh 24 to 31°C with the sea at 24°C. Rain is non existent everywhere, skies stay clear on almost every day, and this is one of the two or three cheapest months of the year to visit, so it suits travellers who can handle real heat in the south in exchange for lower prices and thinner crowds.

May Temperatures in Egypt, City by City

These figures are averages for 1991 to 2026, cross checked against Weather Spark's long run station data for each city, and kept consistent with our companion January and April weather guides so the months compare cleanly. Daytime highs climb fast as you move south into Upper Egypt; the Red Sea coast stays noticeably cooler by day than Luxor or Aswan, even though its sea is now warm enough for comfortable swimming.

City Night (min) Day (max) Sea Sunshine
Cairo 20°C 32°C not coastal 11 hrs/day
Luxor 23°C 38°C not coastal 11 hrs/day
Aswan 24°C 38°C not coastal 11.5 hrs/day
Hurghada 22°C 32°C 25°C 12 hrs/day
Sharm el-Sheikh 24°C 31°C 24°C 11.5 hrs/day

One exception worth flagging: the khamsin, a hot, dust laden wind that peaks in April, can still blow through in the first half of May in some years. It is occasional rather than a given, but if a khamsin day does hit, expect reduced visibility, a sharp temperature spike, and a good reason to keep indoor plans in reserve.

What the Weather Is Like in Egypt in May

May is where Egypt's summer properly begins in the Nile Valley, though the transition is gradual rather than sudden. Clear or near clear skies are the rule on nearly every day of the month, rainfall is effectively zero across the whole country, and humidity stays low away from the coast. Cairo remains the mildest of the mainland cities, staying in the low thirties by day, while Luxor and Aswan push into the high thirties and start to feel like genuine desert summer. The Red Sea coast, by contrast, warms more slowly than the interior and stays a few degrees cooler by day than the Nile Valley, even as the sea itself climbs into comfortable swimming territory.

Egypt weather in May in a sentence: hot and rising fast in the south, still very manageable in Cairo, and increasingly appealing on the coast as the water warms. This is also the point in the calendar where the balance of a trip tends to shift away from long days in the open sun towards early starts, shaded museums, and afternoons by the water.

How Hot Does Egypt Get in May?

Genuinely hot in the south, comfortably warm everywhere else. Daytime highs run from 32°C in Cairo up to 38°C in Luxor and Aswan, with the Red Sea resorts sitting a little lower at 31 to 32°C thanks to the moderating sea breeze. Is Egypt hot in May? Yes, in Upper Egypt specifically: 38°C is proper desert heat, and outdoor sightseeing needs to be timed around it rather than fought through. How hot is Egypt in May compared with high summer gives useful context: May's 38°C in Luxor is still noticeably below the 42 to 44°C that July and August bring to the same city.

Temperature in Egypt in May: Day and Night

By day, 32°C in Cairo rising to 38°C in Luxor and Aswan, with the coast at 31 to 32°C. By night, the picture stays warm rather than cool: 20°C in Cairo, 23 to 24°C in Luxor and Aswan, and 22 to 24°C on the coast. That narrower day to night gap than in winter is the main practical difference from a January or February trip: evenings no longer call for a fleece, and a light layer is usually enough even after dark.

Eid al-Adha 2026 in Egypt

Egypt's Eid al-Adha holiday is currently estimated to fall around 26 to 29 May 2026, pending the official sighting of the crescent moon that fixes the exact date each year. Banks, government offices and many businesses close for several days around the holiday, hotels in Cairo and on the coast tend to fill with domestic travellers, and some archaeological sites run reduced hours. If your dates land close to this window, it is worth building in a little flexibility and booking transport and key sites slightly further ahead than usual. Our team tracks the confirmed date each year and adjusts client itineraries accordingly.

What to Do in Egypt in May

Nile cruise, Luxor to Aswan (4 to 7 nights): May sits at the edge of the comfortable cruising window for the Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan, with warm rather than hot evenings on the upper deck and temple visits at Edfu, Kom Ombo and Philae best done early. We generally steer clients towards a small, air conditioned dahabeya (8 to 12 cabins) rather than a large liner (60 to 100 cabins) for a cooler, more personal week on the water.

Cairo and the Giza pyramids (3 to 4 days): a morning visit to the Giza plateau, timed for around 6am to beat both the heat and the coach traffic, followed by the Grand Egyptian Museum, Saqqara and Memphis. The Coptic quarter and the souk at Khan el Khalili are best walked in the early evening once temperatures ease. See our guide to visiting Cairo.

Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh or Marsa Alam on the coast (4 to 7 days): diving and snorkelling with the Red Sea at its most comfortable, day trips out to Mahmya, Giftun or Ras Mohammed, and warm evenings for lounging by the pool between dives. See our Hurghada guide or our guide to diving and beaches at Marsa Alam.

What to Pack for Egypt in May

Light, breathable cotton or linen for daytime, a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses, sun cream at SPF 30 or higher, a scarf to cover shoulders and knees at religious sites, and closed walking shoes that can cope with uneven temple floors. Evenings rarely need more than a light long sleeved layer. If diving or snorkelling, a swimsuit is enough for most of the day; a thin rash vest helps with sun exposure on longer boat trips. For our complete list, see what to pack for Egypt.

Crowds in Egypt in May

May sits well outside the December to February peak, and visitor numbers at the big sites drop off noticeably once the heat sets in across Upper Egypt. Giza, the Valley of the Kings and Karnak are markedly quieter than in winter, particularly by mid morning once the temperature climbs. The one exception is the estimated Eid al-Adha window at the very end of the month, when domestic travel picks up around Cairo and the coast. Outside that window, May rewards early starts less for crowd avoidance than for comfort: departures at six or seven put you back indoors or by the pool before the worst of the heat arrives.

Hotels and cruise boats charge close to their annual low in May, typically 30 to 40 percent below the same room in January or February. Availability is easier too, so you can often book good boats and hotels just a few weeks out rather than three to four months ahead. As a rough guide, an 8 day holiday on half board in 4 star properties, with four nights afloat and internal travel inside Egypt included (though not your flight from the UK), runs from about £900 to £1,100 a head. Step up to 5 star throughout across 12 to 15 days and the figure moves to roughly £1,900 to £2,300. Send us your dates and preferences on WhatsApp and we will sharpen those numbers for your specific trip, including around the Eid al-Adha window if that affects your dates.

May Compared with April and June

April, May and June form the run up to Egypt's full summer, and the differences between them are mostly a matter of degree. April is a touch cooler and still carries some risk of khamsin winds; June pushes Luxor and Aswan close to 40°C and the Red Sea sea temperature up further still. May sits in the middle: hot in the south, comfortable on the coast, and priced at the low end of the year specifically because it falls between the spring and the school summer holiday crowds.

For weather alone, the choice usually comes down to your heat tolerance rather than anything else: expect Luxor two or three degrees cooler in April than in May, and a similar step up again from May into June. Pricing follows a similar curve, with April still carrying a little of the spring premium, May at the low point of the year, and June easing only slightly as the school summer holidays start to approach. If your dates are flexible, see our companion guides to Egypt in April and Egypt in June for the full picture either side.

Suggested May 2026 Itineraries

The Essential (8 days)

Four days in Cairo (pyramids, Grand Egyptian Museum, Saqqara, Khan el Khalili) plus four days cruising Luxor to Aswan on an air conditioned dahabeya, with sightseeing scheduled for early morning. A sound choice for a first visit at low season prices.

The Complete (12 to 15 days)

Three days in the capital, five on the river, four on the Hurghada or Marsa Alam coast, then back to Cairo to close the loop. Pharaohs in the cooler morning hours, the Red Sea for the heat of the afternoon.

The Red Sea Prime (7 to 10 days)

Direct flight to Hurghada or Sharm el-Sheikh, a seaside stay with diving excursions to Giftun, Mahmya or Ras Mohammed, and the option to extend with a short Cairo getaway either side.

Practical Notes for Your May 2026 Trip

Flights: British Airways and EGYPTAIR fly direct from London to Cairo, typically five to six hours in the air, with seasonal direct services from London and Manchester to Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh. If you are combining Cairo with the coast or the Nile, we route most clients through Cairo first, using a short internal flight or the high speed rail line onward to Luxor and Aswan, keeping the whole trip inside one coherent loop.

Safety: the established tourist circuit (Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh) sits well within the areas the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office rates as safe for travel; current FCDO cautions concentrate on North Sinai, the Libyan border area and parts of the Western Desert, none of which feature on a standard SEV itinerary. See our 2026 Egypt safety guide for the full picture.

Getting around: every transfer runs in a private, air conditioned vehicle, with an English speaking driver where you would like one. Longer hops between cities are handled by internal flights or rail, booked and coordinated by our team alongside the rest of your itinerary. For the bigger picture across the whole year, see our month by month guide to when to go.

Egypt Weather in May: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the weather like in Egypt in May?

Hot and dry, with clear skies on almost every day of the month. Daytime temperatures run from about 32°C in Cairo to 38°C in Luxor and Aswan, with the Red Sea coast a few degrees cooler by day at 31 to 32°C. Rain is essentially non existent everywhere in the country.

What is the temperature in Egypt in May?

By day: roughly 32°C in Cairo, 38°C in Luxor and Aswan, and 31 to 32°C at Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh. By night: 20°C in Cairo, 23 to 24°C in Luxor, Aswan and on the Red Sea coast.

Is May too hot to visit Egypt?

Not for most travellers, though it demands a different rhythm than a winter trip. Cairo and the Red Sea coast stay entirely manageable, while Luxor and Aswan at 38°C need early starts and shaded midday breaks. If you struggle with heat above the mid thirties, April or the autumn months suit better, but May's low prices and thin crowds are real compensations.

Is May a workable month for a Nile cruise?

It is, provided you choose the boat carefully. An air conditioned dahabeya keeps cabins comfortable through the heat of the day, and temple visits are best scheduled for early morning. Our SEV team favours the small 8 to 12 cabin dahabeya for exactly this reason in the warmer months.

Is the Red Sea swimmable in May?

Very much so: with the sea at 24 to 25°C in May, you can swim comfortably without a wetsuit. Underwater visibility stays strong, typically 25 to 35 metres, and the reefs at Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh and Marsa Alam are all in good condition for diving and snorkelling at this point in the year.

When is Eid al-Adha in Egypt in 2026?

Eid al-Adha 2026 is currently estimated to fall around 26 to 29 May, though the exact date depends on the official sighting of the crescent moon and is confirmed only shortly beforehand. Banks and many businesses close for several days around the holiday, and hotels in Cairo and on the coast tend to be busier with domestic travellers.

How much should you budget for 10 days in Egypt in May?

Count roughly £1,100 to £1,400 per person for 10 days in 4 star hotels with a Nile cruise, the Cairo leg, private transfers and an English speaking guide, with domestic flights included. For a 5 star trip with a luxury dahabeya, budget closer to £2,200 to £2,600. May sits near the cheapest point of the year, well below the January to February peak.

Are there many tourists in Egypt in May?

Noticeably fewer than in the December to February peak. The main sites are markedly quieter once the heat builds through the morning, with the exception of a short spike around the estimated Eid al-Adha holiday at the very end of the month, when domestic travel increases around Cairo and the coast.

Does it rain in Egypt in May?

Essentially never. Rainfall across the whole country in May rounds to zero on any long run average, and the only weather event worth planning around is the occasional khamsin, a hot, dusty wind that mostly blows through in April but can still appear in the first half of May.

What should I pack for Egypt in May?

Light cotton or linen for daytime, a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses, high factor sun cream, a scarf for religious sites and closed shoes for temple floors. Evenings are warm enough that a fleece is rarely needed, though a light long sleeved layer is useful for air conditioned interiors and evening breezes on the coast.

Is it safe to visit Egypt in May 2026?

The full tourist circuit, Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, the Nile cruise route and the Red Sea resorts, sits within the areas the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office considers safe for travel. Current FCDO advice concentrates its cautions on North Sinai, the area near the Libyan border and parts of the Western Desert, well away from any SEV itinerary. See our full safety guide for the detail behind that advice.

How many hours of sunshine does Egypt get in May?

Around 11 hours a day in Cairo and Luxor, climbing to 11.5 hours in Aswan and Sharm el-Sheikh, and about 12 hours in Hurghada, among the sunniest readings anywhere in the country at any point in the year.
