Day-by-Day Program (7 Nights, 8 Days)

Visitors at the pyramids of Giza in Egypt

Day 1: Arrival in Luxor, Valley of the Kings

You arrive in Luxor. Airport transfer. Afternoon visit to the Valley of the Kings (if time allows). Otherwise, rest at the hotel. Boarding at 6-7 pm on your boat. Welcome dinner. Night 1 aboard.

The Valley of the Kings? This is where the pharaohs of the 18th-20th dynasties were buried (Ramesses II, Thutmose III, Thutmose IV). You descend into the tombs. The walls are covered with hieroglyphs and paintings. It is underground, cool, preserved. A must-see.

Day 2: Luxor, Temple of Karnak or Luxor, Dendera

Optional sunrise. Morning: Temple of Karnak (the largest temple in Egypt) or Luxor Temple if Dendera is on the program. Karnak is enormous: 74 acres. You spend 3-4 hours there. The columns stand 66 feet tall. The sacred lake remains. It is overwhelming.

Afternoon: sailing south. Night 2 aboard. Some itineraries add a visit to Dendera (north of Luxor), where you see the Temple of Hathor and the famous Egyptian zodiac.

Day 3: Edfu (Temple of the Falcon)

Arrival at Edfu around 10 am. Visit to the Temple of Edfu (the best preserved in all of Egypt). Two hours is enough. The falcon at the entrance. The legible hieroglyphs. The partial colors. Back aboard. In the afternoon: rest, swimming (some boats have a pool). Night 3 aboard, sailing overnight.

Day 4: Kom Ombo, then Aswan

Morning: Kom Ombo. A double temple, symmetrical architecture. Mummified crocodiles in the museum. One hour is enough. Sailing toward Aswan. Arrival around 2 pm. Afternoon: rest or a visit to the Aswan souk. Evening: a private felucca ride at sunset ($45 supplement). It is magical. Night 4 in Aswan.

Day 5: Abu Simbel (full-day excursion)

Departure at 4 am (in a convoy). Minibus from Aswan (56 miles south). Arrival at Abu Simbel around 6:30 am. Sunrise over the colossi (72 feet tall). Visit of the temple. Return to Aswan around 1 pm. Rest. Gala dinner aboard. Night 5 in Aswan.

Abu Simbel is carved into solid rock. The temple has a unique geophysical phenomenon: twice a year (February 22 and October 22), the sun travels through the hall and lights up the statues of the gods at the back. It is incredible. You feel small before these colossi.

Day 6: Elephantine Island, Aswan Town

A free day in Aswan. Option 1: visit Elephantine Island (Nubian history, museum, small Temple of Khnum). Option 2: visit the Aswan Dam (impressive, 11,800 feet long). Option 3: full rest aboard or at the souk. Night 6 in Aswan.

Day 7: Sailing back toward Luxor

A full day of sailing. The boat heads back north. You stay aboard, read, watch the Nile, sleep. Light meals. Entertainment if available. Night 7 aboard.

Day 8: Disembarkation in Luxor, departure

Breakfast. Disembarkation around 8 am. Transfer to the airport for your flight home. A final glance at the Nile before you go.

Practical tips for a 7-day cruise

Sailing felucca on the Nile in Aswan

In short, a 7-day cruise on the Nile is the complete adventure. But to enjoy it to the fullest, a few practical details are worth planning ahead.

Get ready for the boat routine. After 2 or 3 days of intense sightseeing, the pace naturally settles. The days alternate between morning excursions (departure 7-8 am, return 12-1 pm) and free afternoons on the deck or at the spa. So pack a good book, a deck of cards, or a travel journal. The evenings aboard are lively: a Nubian dance show, a galabeya night (traditional Egyptian dress), and a barbecue on the upper deck.

The Wi-Fi question. Honestly, the internet connection on cruise boats is often slow and unreliable. Recent 5-star boats offer free Wi-Fi, but the speed barely covers sending WhatsApp messages. For social media and sending photos, use your local SIM card (Vodafone or Orange, 200 EGP for 10 GB). 4G coverage is good all along the Nile, except between Esna and Edfu, where the signal is weak.

Detailed budget for a 7-day cruise

Here is what a 7-day cruise really costs in 2026:

  • 4-star full-board cruise: $430 to $700 per person in a double cabin
  • 5-star cruise: $750 to $1,200 per person
  • Dahabiya (traditional sailboat): $970 to $1,600 per person for the most intimate experience
  • Included excursions: most 7-day cruises include all the major visits (Karnak, Luxor, Valley of the Kings, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Philae)
  • Tips: $65 to $110 for the full week ($16 per day is the recommended norm)
  • Drinks and extras: $45 to $85 for the week

That said, the domestic flights Cairo-Luxor and Aswan-Cairo add about $215 to $325 per person. Some packages already include them. Be sure to check this point when you book.

Mistakes to avoid over 7 days

  • Not making the most of free stops: some days include free time at the dock (Esna, Edfu). Use it to wander through the villages, taste the local street food (foul, taameya), and interact with the locals. These are often the best memories.
  • Staying shut in your cabin during the sailing: the upper deck offers a constant show: feluccas, buffalo at the water's edge, fishermen, colorful Nubian villages. Settle in with a tea and take it in.
  • Skipping the visit to Abu Simbel: from Aswan, the excursion to Abu Simbel is possible in a single day (departure 3:30 am, return 1 pm by bus, or 30 min by plane). The Temple of Ramesses II is breathtaking and worth every minute of the trip.
  • Forgetting medication: the change in diet and the local water can cause digestive trouble. Pack an anti-diarrheal (Imodium), activated charcoal, and rehydration salts. The onboard pharmacies are limited.

Our take on the 7-day cruise

This is our favorite format. Honestly, 7 days lets you see the essentials of Upper Egypt without rushing, with time to savor life aboard. It is the right balance between exploration and relaxation. In short, if you are torn between 4 nights and 7 days, and your schedule allows it, take the 7 days. You will not regret it. The 7-day cruise includes stops that the short version skips (like Dendera and Abydos on some itineraries), and these less-visited temples are among the most beautiful in Egypt.
