Visiting Aswan in 2026: Complete Guide to the Pearl of Nubia

May 31 2026

Aswan is Egypt's southern gateway, where the Nile winds between granite islands and Nubian culture reveals a face of the country far removed from the land of the pharaohs. Less monumental than Luxor, Aswan wins you over with its easygoing pace, the beauty of its landscapes and the warmth of its people.

Philae Temple on its island, Nubian villages with their brightly painted houses, felucca sails at sunset, a souk scented with spices and karkade: Aswan offers a sensory, soothing experience. It is also the launch point for the excursion to Abu Simbel, one of the most spectacular sites in all of Egypt.

This guide, updated for 2026, gathers every piece of practical information you need to plan your visit: must-see sites, prices, transport and insider tips.

The Must-See Sites of Aswan

Philae Temple: The Jewel of the Nile

Philae Temple, dedicated to the goddess Isis, is arguably the most romantic of all Egyptian temples. Rescued from the waters of Lake Nasser by UNESCO in the 1970s (like Abu Simbel), it was relocated to the island of Agilkia, where it stands majestically today.

Access is by water taxi from the Shellal jetty, 5 miles south of the town center. The crossing is an experience in itself, gliding between the granite boulders. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for a full visit of the temple.

2026 price: 550 EGP (~$11) for the temple + 150 EGP for the round-trip boat (official, per boat of 1-8 people). Buy the temple ticket before boarding. Hours: 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. (winter), 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. (summer). Card payment is mandatory for the entry ticket.

Unfinished Obelisk and the Granite Quarries

In Aswan's ancient pink granite quarries, a 138-foot obelisk still lies attached to the bedrock. Had it been completed, it would have been the largest obelisk in Egypt. This fascinating site reveals the stone-cutting techniques of the ancient Egyptians. Entry: 220 EGP (~$4). Visit: 45 min.

Aswan High Dam

Built with Soviet assistance in the 1960s, the dam is an engineering feat 11,800 feet long that created Lake Nasser. The view over the lake is impressive, and a small museum traces the history of its construction. Entry: 200 EGP (~$4). Visit: 30-45 min.

Nubian Museum

This remarkable museum traces 6,000 years of Nubian history, from prehistory to the pharaonic and Christian civilizations. Models, statues, jewelry and everyday objects illustrate a culture that is too often overlooked. Entry: 400 EGP (~$8). Open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (evening hours Thursday and Friday until 9 p.m.). Allow 1.5 hours.

The Nubian Villages: An Authentic Encounter

Visiting a Nubian village is a must-do experience in Aswan. The Nubians, an ancient people of southern Egypt, live in houses with facades painted in vivid colors and adorned with traditional motifs. Their legendary hospitality and unique culture offer a striking contrast to pharaonic Egypt.

Villages of Siou and Koti (on Elephantine Island): reachable by free ferry from the corniche (5 EGP), free entry. Wander at will through the colorful lanes and meet the locals. Ideal for an independent visit.

Village of Gharb Seheil (west bank): reachable by water taxi or as part of an organized excursion (500 to 2,500 EGP per person, 3-4 hrs). A typical program includes a visit to traditional houses, an encounter with pet crocodiles, henna, a complimentary hibiscus tea and time to wander.

Tip: respect local customs, ask permission before photographing people, and bring a small gift (school supplies, treats for the children) to thank your hosts for their welcome.

Felucca Sail: The Soul of the Nile

Sailing a felucca in Aswan is an almost meditative experience. These traditional engineless sailboats glide silently between the granite islands, offering superb views of Elephantine Island, Kitchener's botanical garden and the Aga Khan mausoleum.

Prices: 300 to 500 EGP per boat for 1 hour (not per person!), 500 to 800 EGP for 2 hours. The classic route circles Elephantine Island. The ideal moment is sunset, when the Nile turns golden and the white feluccas stand out against the pink sky.

Multi-day felucca cruise: for the adventurous, it is possible to sail by felucca from Aswan to Edfu (2-3 nights). Budget around $100 per night with meals and overnight stays aboard. A uniquely immersive experience.

The Aswan Souk: 1.9 Miles of Color

The Aswan souk (Sharia as-Souq) stretches 1.9 miles parallel to the Nile. Covered with canvas, it makes for a shaded stroll even in the full heat of the day. Open roughly 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., it is the perfect place to find karkade (dried hibiscus), spices, henna, Nubian crafts (baskets, jewelry, fabrics), galabiyyas (traditional tunics) and scented oils.

Tip: opening prices are often 3 to 5 times the real price. Haggle with a smile and aim for 20 to 25% of the asking price as your starting point for the negotiation.

FAQ: Visiting Aswan

How many days do you need to visit Aswan?

Two full days are ideal: one day for the temples (Philae, unfinished obelisk, high dam) and one day for the Nubian experience (Nubian village, felucca, souk, Nubian museum). Add a day for the excursion to Abu Simbel.

Can you visit a Nubian village without an organized excursion?

Yes! The villages of Siou and Koti on Elephantine Island are reachable by ferry (5 EGP) and free to visit on your own. For Gharb Seheil on the west bank, it is better to book a water taxi or an organized excursion, as access is more complicated.

Is the Aswan souk worth the visit?

Absolutely. At 1.9 miles long and covered, it makes for a pleasant stroll even in the full heat. You will find top-quality karkade (hibiscus), spices, Nubian crafts and galabiyyas. Always haggle: the first price quoted is rarely the real one.

Is the Aswan-Abu Simbel bus transfer tiring?

The trip takes about 3h-3h30 with a departure around 3-4 a.m. It is an early start, but most travelers sleep on the bus. Arriving in front of the temples at sunrise more than rewards the effort. The air option (40 min) exists too.

What budget should you plan for the Aswan sites?

Count on about $37 per person for the 6 main sites (Philae, obelisk, dam, museum, Elephantine, botanical garden), including the boat for Philae. Add $11-16 for a felucca and $9-50 for a Nubian visit depending on the package.
