GEM or the Cairo Museum at Tahrir: which one should you see in 2026? Ever since the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) opened its doors in November 2025, British travellers have quite reasonably been asking. Do you go for the dazzling new building out by the Pyramids, or the hundred-year-old institution on Tahrir Square in the middle of town? The SEV team fields this exact question 5 times a day, so here is the full answer: a frank comparison, guidance keyed to the sort of trip you are taking, and the two-museum solution we suggest to 80% of the people we look after.

The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) - The essential things to know
The Grand Egyptian Museum is the biggest archaeological museum on earth devoted to one civilisation. It opened on November 1, 2025, after 20 years of building work and $1.2 billion of investment, and within 6 months it had become Egypt's leading cultural draw.
- Location: Giza plateau, 2 km from the Pyramids, Cairo-Alexandria desert road. 18 km from the center of Cairo (Tahrir), 35 to 75 minutes by taxi.
- Area: 480,000 m² including 100,000 m² of permanent exhibition. That's the equivalent of 67 football fields.
- Collection: Over 100,000 pieces, among them all 5,398 items of the treasure of Tutankhamun, shown together for the first time (Tahrir had room for only 1,800 of the 5,398).
- Showpiece: The vast Grand Staircase, built around the colossal figure of Ramses II (3,200 years old, 11 metres tall, 83 tons).
- Architecture: A triangular front lined up exactly with Giza's three pyramids, which you can survey from the rooftop restaurant.
- Price 2026: 1,450 EGP (~£24) foreign adult, 730 EGP child/student.
- Reservation: Mandatory via visit-gem.com since December 2025.
- Hours: 9am-9pm daily high season (Oct-April), 9am-5pm low season.
The GEM is what people now call "the new museum Egypt": fully digital, air-conditioned throughout, QR codes explaining the exhibits in 8 languages (English among them), audio guides at no charge, lifts and cafés. In 2026 it sets the standard for museums worldwide.

The Egyptian Museum in Cairo (Tahrir) - The essential things to know
Cairo's Egyptian museum, the historic one on Tahrir Square, was founded in 1902 by the French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette and still counts among the world's great museums. Across 120 years it has welcomed millions, and it keeps a character all its own: the patina of age, wooden cabinets, labels written by hand and soft daylight filtering in.
- Where: Right on Tahrir Square, downtown Cairo, 10 minutes' walk from the Nile Marriott.
- Area: 17,000 m² on 2 floors - 7% of the GEM surface area.
- Collection: Around 165,000 objects stored, including 50,000 on display. Many have been transferred to the GEM since 2024 (including Tutankhamun in its entirety).
- Centerpiece: The Amarna art collection and the treasure of Yuya and Tuya. The funerary mask of Tutankhamun - solid gold 11 kg, lapis lazuli, obsidian, left Tahrir in 2025 and is now on display at the GEM with the complete Tutankhamun treasure.
- Remaining treasures: Jewelry of the Pharaohs, papyrus from the Book of the Dead, predynastic palettes, sarcophagi (the royal mummies moved to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in 2021).
- Architecture: Neoclassical building from 1902, ocher red facade, garden with life-size sphinx at the entrance.
- Price 2026: 550 EGP (~£10) foreign adult, 275 EGP child. Room of mummies: +400 EGP supplement.
- Reservation: Not obligatory, tickets on site or egymonuments.com.
- Hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day except Friday 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
To visit the Tahrir is to experience the museum as the early Egyptologists saw it - a large-scale, dense, almost chaotic cabinet of curiosities. It is the nostalgic and heritage experience, complementary but radically different from the GEM.

Which one to choose according to your travel profile
Your first Egypt trip, with only 1 or 2 days in the capital
Recommendation - GEM only. If you have little time and this is your first contact with ancient Egypt, the GEM concentrates the essentials - pyramids 2 km away, complete Tutankhamun, chronological educational tour. You will leave with a global and structured vision. The Tahrir can wait for a second visit.
Passionate about Egyptology or return to Egypt
Recommendation - All three sites. The mask of Tutankhamun and his complete treasure are now reunited at the GEM. The historic collection at Tahrir (Amarna art, the treasure of Yuya and Tuya) remains a strong point that the GEM does not have, and the royal mummies are on display at the NMEC. Allow half a day for the GEM and for Tahrir, on 2 different days so as not to overwhelm. Tahrir in the morning (cozy atmosphere), GEM in the afternoon with sunset over the Pyramids.
Family with children 6-14 years old
Recommendation - GEM as a priority. The modern course, the interactive screens, the children's audio guide in French, and the air-conditioned cafeteria make the GEM much more accessible to children. The Tahrir remains fascinating but less suitable (heat, high windows, no rest area). If you have 2 days, save the Tahrir for teenagers interested in mummies.
Short stay business + tourism (transit 24h-48h)
Recommendation - Tahrir. If you are in short transit with a hotel close to the center, the Tahrir is 10 minutes by taxi versus 60 minutes for the GEM. In 2 hours you see the historic Amarna art collection, the treasure of Yuya and Tuya, and the main jewels of the Pharaohs. The mask of Tutankhamun and the complete treasure are now at the GEM. More efficient for a transit. See our Cairo stopover tour which includes Tahrir + Pyramids in 8 hours.
Photographer or art lover
Recommendation - GEM as a priority. The light of the Grand Staircase at sunrise, the architectural alignment with the Pyramids, and the panoramic rooftop views offer unrivaled photographic compositions. The Tahrir remains precious for its vintage atmosphere and the sepia contrast, but the GEM dominates in pure spectacularity. Photo without flash allowed everywhere except in Tutankhamun's treasure.
Want a combined GEM + Tahrir + Pyramids over 2 days?
The SEV team arranges your 2-3 days in Cairo: queue-jumping tickets for both museums, an English-speaking Egyptologist guide and a central hotel. Quote within 24 hours.

Why visit both museums if you can
Plenty of visitors assume, wrongly, that the GEM makes Tahrir redundant. It does not, for practical reasons:
- The historic collection stays unique to Tahrir. The Amarna art, the treasure of Yuya and Tuya, and the building itself (opened in 1902) are not replicated at the GEM. Tutankhamun's mask left Tahrir for the GEM in 2025, where it is now displayed with the complete treasure.
- The royal mummies are at the NMEC, not the GEM. Ramesses II, Seti I, Thutmose III and Hatshepsut are among 22 royal mummies moved from Tahrir's "Royal Mummies Hall" to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) at Fustat in April 2021. If you want to see them, plan a visit to the NMEC.
- The museographic contexts are complementary. The Tahrir presents Egypt seen by Egyptologists of the 19th-20th century (Mariette, Maspero, Carter). The GEM presents Egypt seen through contemporary archaeology. Seeing both gives a rich historiographical perspective.
- Combined rates are advantageous. For 2,250 EGP (~£40) total, you gain access to the two museums spread over 2 days. It is the densest cultural package in Cairo.
- The whole experience. Take in the history and the old-world feel of Tahrir first, then end with the GEM's spectacular modern displays, and you get a compelling story of how the West rediscovered the pharaohs.
Compared prices 2026 - How much does each option cost?
| Options | EGP rate | EUR |

| Combined GEM + Tahrir | 2 250 | £40 |

FAQ: The questions we hear most about GEM versus Tahrir
Is Tutankhamun's mask at the GEM or at the Tahrir?
At the GEM. The mask left Tahrir in 2025 and has been on display at the GEM since the museum's full opening in November 2025, alongside the complete Tutankhamun treasure (5,398 objects).
How many days to visit both museums?
Allow 2 days at least. The GEM takes 4-6 hours (with lunch), Tahrir 2-3 hours. Cramming both into one day can be done, but you will be shattered. The SEV team suggests Tahrir one morning and the GEM another afternoon (or the reverse), across 2 days.
Which museum is more suitable for children?
The GEM. Air conditioning throughout, children's audio guide in French, interactive screens, easy-to-follow chronological route, cafeteria and accessible toilets. Tahrir is dense, sometimes hot in high season, and the high windows are not suitable for under 10s.
Is the Tahrir Museum going to close now that the GEM is open?
It is not. In January 2026 the ministry confirmed that Tahrir stays open to visitors. A full refurbishment of the galleries is pencilled in for 2027-2029, with the work done in stages so the museum can keep running. Tahrir keeps its historic collection, while Tutankhamun's mask and the complete treasure are now at the GEM and the royal mummies remain at the NMEC.
Should we reserve the Tahrir like the GEM?
No. Tahrir still sells tickets at the door and through egymonuments.com, with no need to book beforehand. Turning up on the day works even in peak season, though on January 1st and during religious festivals the queue can stretch to 30 minutes.
Is there a English-speaking guide for Tahrir?
You can, though it is not part of the ticket. Official ministry guides can be hired at the entrance (450 EGP/2h), or you can arrange one ahead of time through the SEV team. Tahrir does offer an audio guide (+80 EGP), but for anyone with a real interest a living Egyptologist beats a recording by a mile.
Could you do the GEM in the morning and Tahrir after lunch?
In principle, yes, but we would steer you away from it. The GEM (5 hours on average) plus the transfer into central Cairo (45 min) plus Tahrir (2h30) adds up to 8 hours of museums. That is overload, and the experience falls away sharply after lunch. Give each its own day.
