Ptravel to Egypt in December 2026, is choosing a Christmas that has no equivalent. Guaranteed sunshine, 24°C in Cairo, illuminated pyramids in the evening, gourmet dinner on the Nile on December 24, fireworks gala in Karnak for the 31st, and - rare bonus - a second Christmas to experience on January 7 with the Egyptian Coptic community which celebrates the Nativity according to the Julian calendar. For a English-speaking traveler tired of the gray of Paris and Lyon, Egypt in December is the climatic antithesis of everyday life. For our SEV team based in Cairo, it is also the month where the quality of an agency is measured - the slightest logistical failure during the holidays costs the client dearly.
This guide covers everything - precise weather, Christmas and New Year program, Nile cruise, comparison Dec 1-22 vs Dec 23-31 vs Jan 1-7 (the price peak that no one explains), eVisa formalities for departure during the holidays. December 2026: the case for spending Christmas in Egypt

Five concrete reasons that make December 2026 the optimal month for celebrations in Egypt. Our team has operated New Year's Eve on the Nile for eight seasons - here's what really works.
- Dream European climate - 21°C in Cairo, 24°C in Luxor, 23°C in Hurghada, clear sky. You exchange 5°C in Paris for 22°C in Cairo, without the summer heatwave or the end-of-month October rain in Alexandria.
- Two Christmases in one trip - December 24-25 European Catholic meets January 6-7 Coptic Orthodox. If you extend until mid-January, you experience both celebrations - unique in the world.
- Seeing in the New Year afloat: both 5★ cruise ships and traditional dahabiehs lay on fine dining on the river, with Egyptian music and dancing to follow. Every festive option is set out on our Nile cruise pages.
- The GEM at its busiest: open since November 2025, the Grand Egyptian Museum faces its first winter running at full visitor capacity. You must book through visit-gem.com, and nothing else compares.
- Ancient sites in perfect light - the Egyptian winter light, soft and golden, transforms Karnak and the Valley of the Kings into an open-air cinema. Photographers come away satisfied.
The problem to anticipate - December is the price peak of the year. Count 30 to 50% above October rates for the weeks of December 23 to January 7. Reservations 4-6 months in advance strongly recommended.
Egypt's weather in December 2026, broken down by region
Only January and February are cooler than December. The figures below are given city by city and draw on the latest data from the Egyptian Meteorological Service.
| City | Min night | Max day | Wed / verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cairo | 10°C | 21°C | Mediterranean sweetness. Mid-season evening jacket. |
| Luxor | 8°C | 24°C | Dry sun, visits all day. |
| Aswan | 11°C | 25°C | Ideal. Sweeter than Luxor. |
| Hurghada | 14°C | 23°C | Sea 23°C, combi diving 5mm. |
| Sharm el-Sheikh | 14°C | 23°C | Sea 23°C, all-inclusive great comfort. |
| Marsa Alam | 15°C | 24°C | Sea 24°C, optimal diving. |
| Alexandria | 11°C | 19°C | Rain 30 mm, the wettest month. |
| Siwa | 5°C | 22°C | Cold desert nights. Essential fleece. |
Three tips that other guides forget. First, plan to layer with a mid-season jacket and sweater because the evenings are cool everywhere, especially on the cruise (strong air conditioning on board). Second, avoid Alexandria for the holidays - it's the rainiest month of the Mediterranean year. Third, the western desert (Siwa, white desert) requires a sleeping bag if bivouac, the nights drop to 0-5°C. To place December in the annual climate, see our month by month temperature guide.

Coptic Christmas: customs, feasting and festivities in Egypt

Egypt is officially 90% Sunni Muslim, 10% Coptic Orthodox. European Catholic Christmas on December 25 is not a public holiday. But commercially, all 5★ hotels and Nil cruises offer a complete festive program - tree decorations, New Year's Eve buffets on December 24 and 31, dancing activities, children's programs.
Egypt's true Christmas is Coptic Christmas on January 7, 2027, which the country's Christians keep by the Julian calendar. It follows a fast of 43 days (the Sawm al-Milad, running from November 25 to January 6) and ranks among the great feasts of the Coptic year. Stay on past January 1 and you can witness the celebrations for yourself.
- St. Mark's Cathedral, Abbassia (Cairo): Pope Tawadros II leads the papal liturgy, carried live on national television, starting at 10pm on January 6 and finishing at about 3am on the 7th.
- The Hanging Church (Coptic Cairo): among the world's oldest churches, and open for a special daytime visit on January 7. You will find it in the Coptic quarter, close to Islamic and historic Cairo.
- Traditional Coptic meal - on January 7 morning, after the night mass, we break the fast with fattah (rice with soaked bread and meat), kahk (stuffed round biscuits), zalabya (sweet donuts).
- Khaby Bouri - bouri (salted mullet) that Egyptians traditionally eat on New Year's Eve, accompanied by fessikh and lemon. Popular dish among all social classes.

New Year in Egypt - gala on the Nile, fireworks in Karnak, Red Sea

Three New Year atmospheres that we recommend at SEV.
- New Year's Eve on a 5★ ship: choose the Sonesta Star Goddess, the Movenpick Royal Lily or the Oberoi Zahra (the most opulent of the three). The vessel moors at Luxor or Edfu for the night of the 31st, with a 7-course dinner from 10pm, a cosmopolitan crowd, Egyptian entertainment and fireworks over the Nile at midnight. Supplement for the evening: £60-£140/person.
- Gala fireworks in Karnak - annual event in Luxor since 2017. Private dinner on the esplanade of the great temple of Amun-Ra, illumination of the pylon at midnight, fireworks synchronized to music. Limited capacity 400 people. Price £220-£350/person (excluding hotel and transport). Reservation 3-4 months in advance.
- All-inclusive New Year Red Sea - Hurghada, El Gouna, Sharm el-Sheikh or Marsa Alam. 5★ hotels with heated swimming pool, beach gala dinner, all-night entertainment, fireworks on the water. Accessible festive international atmosphere. All-inclusive rate 4 nights with New Year's Eve - £530-£990/person.
Our verdict: go for option 1 if you want luxury with culture, option 2 for something out of the ordinary, and option 3 for families who want a relaxed, child-friendly celebration.

Nile Christmas and New Year Cruise - Dahabieh vs 5 stars

For parties, two types of boats are available, with very different philosophies.
Standard 5★ liner (100-180 cabins) - Sonesta, Movenpick, Steigenberger. Hotel comfort, international meals, evening entertainment, gym, spa. International atmosphere (German, Italian, French, American families). Ideal for those who want a comfortable setting and a lively program. New Year's Eve rate for 4 nights included - £990-£1,300/person in a standard double room, £1,300-£1,760 afterwards.
A private traditional dahabieh (4-8 cabins): Sanouhi, Adelaide, Meroe or Nour el-Nil. Lateen sails, an intimate feel and gourmet food cooked on board by a local English-speaking chef, mooring in secluded coves well away from the big ships. No disco, no floor show, just stillness and a sky full of stars. Suited to discerning couples or families after something exclusive. Five nights over New Year, 5* superior category: £1,760-£2,530/person.
Our advice for parties - the private dahabieh if your group can privatize an entire boat (6-8 people), the 5★ liner otherwise. The dahabieh atmosphere at Christmas is unparalleled but requires a good budget.
Getting GEM tickets over the Christmas holidays in December 2026
December 2026 is the GEM's first winter operating at full capacity. Daily numbers are forecast at 15,000-18,000, rising to 25,000 on Saturdays and over the festive period. Booking via visit-gem.com is compulsory, and the morning slots are gone 6 weeks ahead.
Prices maintained in December - 1,450 EGP foreign adult (~£24), 730 EGP ISIC student + child 6-12 years old, free under 6 years old. There is no official combined ticket: the GEM (1,450 EGP) and the Pyramids (700 EGP) are bought separately. English-speaking guided tour 1,950 EGP. No special New Year’s Eve rate.
SEV strategy for December - book 7:00 a.m. slot (first of the day), arrive 8:00 a.m. for the first 90 quiet minutes. For the complete guide, see our complete guide to the Grand Egyptian Museum.
New Year on the Red Sea: Hurghada, Sharm and Marsa Alam
Prefer the beach to the temples? The Red Sea is the simplest place to see in the New Year.
- Hurghada - the main hub, 280 km south of Suez. Sahl Hasheesh palace hotels (Oberoi, Premier Le Reve), all-inclusive 5★ Hilton/Steigenberger/Sunny Days. Cairo excursion by direct flight 1 hour optional. All-inclusive rate 7 nights New Year's Eve - £610-£1,150/person.

What December 2026 costs: Dec 1-22, Dec 23-31 and Jan 1-7 compared
The December price peak is not linear. Here is the actual grid, based on 8 years of holiday SEV operations.
| Departure period | Standard 4★ | Comfort 5★ | Luxury palace |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dec 1-22 (low) | £920-£1,070 | £1,150-£1,380 | 2 090-£1,920 |
| Dec 23-31 (Christmas pic) | £1,300-£1,530 | 2 090-£1,920 | £2,220-£2,760 |
| January 1-7 (Coptic New Year) | £1,070-£1,300 | £1,380-£1,690 | £1,920-£2,300 |
Prices for 10-day all-inclusive package (domestic Egyptian flights that we organize for you - Cairo-Aswan, Luxor-Cairo -, private air-conditioned transfers, hotels according to category, 4-night Luxor-Aswan cruise, meals according to program, private English-speaking guide, site entrances). Excluding visa (30 USD), tips (~£60), drinks excluding meals, New Year’s Eve supplements (£60-£220/person depending on hotel or boat).
SEV's tip: if the week of December 23-31 is not essential, departing between December 16 and 22 is markedly cheaper for exactly the same weather. The week of January 1-7, when Egypt's Copts celebrate Christmas, also comes in well below the Christmas peak.
Once in Egypt, any domestic travel is taken care of by SEV - we organize your domestic flights between the wonders of the country (Cairo-Aswan, Aswan-Luxor, Cairo-Hurghada, Aswan-Abu Simbel) as well as all your private air-conditioned transfers. You travel with peace of mind, without logistics to manage. Book 5-6 months in advance for December - the best units go quickly after September 1st.

Formalities December 2026 - eVisa, passport, vaccines
Critical subject during the holiday season. Embassies are closed from December 23 to January 2 inclusive, the eVisa can take 10-14 days peak New Year's Eve. Anticipate.
- Visa - obligatory for French nationals. Three options. (1) Visa on arrival (VOA) 30 USD at the airport counter, the simplest. (2) e-visa via visa2egypt.gov.eg 30 USD, official deadline 3-7 days but 10-14 days in peak Christmas - apply before December 1st for departure on December 22nd. (3) Traditional embassy visa more restrictive.
- Passport: valid for 6 months beyond your return date. Flying home on January 5, 2027 means a passport good until at least July 5, 2027. Check it before you go.
- Vaccinations - none obligatory for Egypt from the UK in 2026/2027. Recommended by Institut Pasteur - DTP up to date, hepatitis A.
- Travel insurance - strongly recommended with medical repatriation, especially for children and seniors. Cost £30-£50 for 10 days. Cancellation cover useful given the high New Year's Eve rates.
Packing list for the festive season
December requires rigorous layering. Here is our checklist tested by 8 seasons of operation.
- Day - long-sleeved t-shirt, light pants, cap or hat, UV glasses (UV index remains at 5-6 even in December)
- Evening/night Cairo-Luxor - wool or fleece sweater, mid-season jacket, scarf. Night drops to 8-12°C
- Nile Cruise - elegant casual outfit for dinners (policy on board), swimsuit for deck swimming pool (heated), sweater for strong indoor air conditioning
- Red Sea - swimsuit, fins+mask+snorkel if serious snorkeling (3mm shorty wetsuit recommended for water 23°C)
- Western Desert (Siwa/White Desert) - fleece, hat, gloves, sleeping bag if bivouac (night 0-5°C)
- New Year's Eve outfit - formal outfit for boat or hotel gala. Tuxedo or black suit for men, cocktail/long dress for women. Policy varies by establishment.
- Closed shoes - obligatory for visits to ancient sites (dust, stone, uneven steps)
Family with children - tailor-made New Year's Eve program
Festivals in Egypt work particularly well for families with children aged 6-14. Here are our specific recommendations.
- Cairo hotel choice - Mena House (direct view of the pyramids, swimming pool, restaurants for children), Sofitel Cairo Nile El Gezirah (Nile view, swimming pool, kids club). Avoid Sofitel Old Cataract Aswan with very young children (chic adult atmosphere).
- Family cruise - Movenpick and Steigenberger liners have kids club and children's entertainment. Avoid traditional dahabiehs with children under 8 years old (small cabins, adult meals, quiet required).
- Sites suitable for children - GEM (air-conditioned, interactive), Giza pyramids (the wonder remains intact), Khan el-Khalili (search for the treasure of spices), Aswan felucca (children love the traditional boat). Avoid the Vallée des Reines (steep descents) and the long museums if under 8 years old.
- Best bet for families on New Year's Eve: an all-inclusive 5★ resort in Hurghada or El Gouna with a kids' club, a family gala dinner at 7pm rather than midnight, and beach fireworks at 9pm for the children. Our favourite format.
- Premium family New Year’s Eve - Sonesta Sun Goddess liner with gala dinner on board + film projected on a giant deck screen + synchronized fireworks at midnight for parents who are awake.
Your December 2026 Egypt questions answered
How warm will Egypt be in December 2026?
Soft and sunny everywhere. Cairo 10-21°C, Luxor 8-24°C, Aswan 11-25°C, Hurghada 14-23°C (sea 23°C), Sharm 14-23°C (sea 23°C), Marsa Alam 15-24°C (sea 24°C), Alexandria 11-19°C (rainiest month 30mm), Siwa 5-22°C (cold desert nights). Day-evening layering required, Cairo-Louxor evening mid-season jacket, western desert fleece.
Can you swim in Egypt in December?
Yes in the Red Sea. Water at 23-24°C depending on city. Cooler than in summer (28°C) but widely swimmable, especially Marsa Alam (24°C). Diving with 3-5mm shorty wetsuit, visibility 25-35m. All 5★ hotels have heated pools if you want it warmer. Nile at Luxor-Aswan too cold for swimming (16-18°C).
Which date is Christmas in Egypt, Coptic or Gregorian?
There are two. Hotels and cruise ships mark December 25, the Gregorian date, for their guests, but it is no public holiday in a country that is 90% Muslim. The genuine religious feast is Coptic Orthodox Christmas on January 7, 2027, kept by the Christian 10% of Egyptians under the Julian calendar once a 43-day fast ends. The papal liturgy at St Mark's Cathedral in Abbassia starts at 10pm on January 6.
How do Egyptians celebrate Christmas?
Egypt's Copts, a tenth of the population, celebrate Christmas on January 7, 2027, at the end of 43 days of fasting (the Sawm al-Milad, November 25 to January 6). Overnight on January 6 to 7 the papal liturgy at St Mark's Cathedral in Abbassia goes out live on national television. On the morning of the 7th families gather to eat fattah, kahk (round filled biscuits) and zalabya fritters. Muslims do not keep Christmas themselves, but they respect their Christian neighbours who do.
Can we take a Nile cruise for New Year 2026/2027?
Yes, it is an exceptional experience. All 5★ liners and dahabiehs offer a special New Year's Eve program with a 7-course gourmet dinner, Egyptian entertainment, fireworks at midnight on the Nile side. The boat anchors in Luxor or Edfu for the night of December 31. Reservations 4-6 months in advance recommended. New Year's Eve supplement £60-£140/person on the majority of boats. Our Nile cruise hub details all the options.
What should you budget for Christmas or New Year in Egypt?
In a private English-speaking SEV 10-day all-inclusive package - excluding the period December 23-31 (departure December 1-22 or January 1-7), count £920-£1,300/person in standard 4★. During the week 23-31 December (peak Catholic Christmas), £1,300-£1,760/person in 5★. The luxury palace Mena House or Sofitel Old Cataract exceeds £2,220. Variations depending on exact departure date - the week of December 24 remains the most popular and the most expensive.
How far ahead should a December 2026 trip to Egypt be booked?
Absolutely, 4-6 months in advance. Peak December 23-31 is fully booked in November in most 5★ hotels and premium cruises. Best availability runs out quickly after September 1st. For the best cruise units (Sonesta Star Goddess, Movenpick Royal Lily, Oberoi Zahra) on New Year's Eve, ideally book before the end of August. Private Dahabieh - 6-8 months in advance.
Does Egypt put on New Year fireworks?
Yes, in several places. The fireworks gala in Karnak (since 2017) - annual event, limited capacity 400 people, price £220-£350/person, reservation 3-4 months in advance. Nile 5★ cruises have their own lights on board at midnight. All Hurghada/Sharm/El Gouna/Marsa Alam all-inclusive hotels organize bonfires on the beach at midnight. Pyramids of Giza - no official lights (protected archaeological zone), but Sound and Light show all year round.
Will British visitors need a visa for Egypt in December 2026?
Yes, obligatory for French nationals. Three options - (1) Visa on arrival (VOA) 30 USD at the airport counter, the easiest. (2) e-visa via visa2egypt.gov.eg 30 USD, official deadline 3-7 days but 10-14 days in peak Christmas - apply before December 1st for a departure December 22nd. (3) Traditional embassy visa. The passport must be valid for 6 months after the return date.
How does Egypt in December differ from November?
Three key differences. December is 3-5°C cooler on average (Cairo 21°C vs 25°C in November). December concentrates the holidays (Christmas + New Year + Coptic Christmas) - festive activities everywhere. December is 30-50% more expensive during the week 23-31 December. For November details, see our Egypt guide in November 2026. Our advice - November if you are looking for optimal weather conditions without the holiday bonus, December if you want the festive experience while traveling.
Will the Grand Egyptian Museum be open over the 2026/2027 festive period?
It is. The GEM opens daily, December 25 and January 1 included, since Gregorian Christmas is not an official holiday in Egypt, with hours of 9am to 9pm. It also stays open on January 6 (Coptic Christmas Eve) and January 7 (Coptic Christmas), when it is noticeably quieter. Book through visit-gem.com; the adult price for overseas visitors is unchanged at EGP 1,700. For advice on securing tickets over the festive period, see our full guide to the Grand Egyptian Museum.
How many days does it take to visit Egypt at Christmas?
Our recommendation - 10 days minimum to do the Cairo culture + Nile cruise + Red Sea New Year's Eve combo. 7 days is feasible but sacrifices one aspect (usually Red Sea). 14 days allows you to add Alexandria or Siwa, but the cost increases. For the majority of our party clients, the 10 days is the optimal balance between culture, cruise and seaside New Year's Eve.
How to celebrate the New Year on the Nile with a English-speaking agency?
Our SEV New Year's Eve Nile cruise 5★ package - 4 nights Cairo palace (Sofitel or Mena House) + 4 nights 5★ Luxor-Aswan cruise with boat anchored in Luxor or Edfu on the night of the 31st, 7-course gourmet dinner at 10 p.m., Egyptian entertainment, fireworks at midnight on the Nile side, until 1 a.m. Private English-speaking guide on board, private air-conditioned transfers every day. Price - £1,530/adult person all inclusive (Egyptian domestic flights Cairo-Luxor and Aswan-Cairo that we organize for you included). Reserve your place via WhatsApp - limited capacity.
