Five days to see Egypt? It's possible. Cairo, Luxor, Aswan in one trip with no pause. Not comfortable, but doable. And you'll see three cities, three different worlds.

Quick answer

Day 1: Arrival + Pyramids. Day 2: GEM + Flight to Luxor. Day 3: Luxor-Aswan cruise. Day 4: Aswan + Return flight. Day 5: Arrival home. Budget: $950-1,600 all-in (flights + 3-day cruise). Pace: intense but manageable with good lodging.

Day 1: Arrival and the Pyramids of Giza

Pyramids of Giza panorama Egypt

You land in Cairo in the morning. Rest 2 hours at the hotel (light sleep). At 2 p.m., your guide is waiting. Destination: Giza.

You have 3 hours on the plateau. That's less than the 3-day itinerary, but enough for the three main pyramids and the Sphinx. Your guide tells the story quickly, you take your photos, then back to the hotel before sunset.

In the evening: traditional dinner with a view over Cairo. You turn in early. Tomorrow, the flight to Luxor leaves at 9 a.m.

Day 1 schedule

  • 6:00 a.m.: Arrival at Cairo airport, customs
  • 7:30 a.m.: Hotel, rest 2-3 hours
  • 10:30 a.m.: Late breakfast
  • 2:00 p.m.: Departure for Giza with guide
  • 2:45 p.m.: Giza plateau, three pyramids, Sphinx (1h30)
  • 5:00 p.m.: Return to hotel
  • 6:30 p.m.: Dinner and rest
  • 10:00 p.m.: Early to bed

Day 1 tip: rest is strategic

You're tired from the flight. Don't push it. Rest for real. The afternoon is enough for Giza. Sleep well. Tomorrow you leave at 9 a.m., you can't be wiped out.

Day 2: The GEM Museum and Flight to Luxor

Hieroglyphs on the wall of an Egyptian temple

You're up at 6:30 a.m. Breakfast at 7. At 8, your guide takes you to the Grand Egyptian Museum of Cairo (GEM). You spend 2 hours there (less than the 3-day itinerary, but the essential pieces: Tutankhamun, the royal mummies).

At 10, you leave the museum. Back to the hotel, change of clothes, then direct transfer to the airport for the 9:40 a.m. Cairo-Luxor flight.

You arrive in Luxor at 11. Your cruise company is waiting. You board directly. Lunch at 12:30. In the afternoon: rest on the boat or a light visit to Luxor if you're not too tired.

Day 2 schedule

  • 6:30 a.m.: Wake-up and breakfast
  • 8:00 a.m.: Departure for the GEM
  • 8:45 a.m.: GEM entry, quick 2-hour tour
  • 10:45 a.m.: Back to hotel, shower and change
  • 11:30 a.m.: Transfer to airport
  • 12:45 p.m.: Cairo-Luxor flight (1h20)
  • 2:15 p.m.: Arrival in Luxor, boarding the boat
  • 3:00 p.m.: Cabin settle-in, dinner on board

Domestic flight: cheap, fast

Cairo-Luxor: 1h20, $45-65. EgyptAir, Nile Air, Nesma. Your cruise operator books it. It's tiring, but it's the only way to do 5 days.

Day 3: Luxor-Aswan Cruise (Cruise Day 1)

Cruise on the Nile between Luxor and Aswan

You wake up on the Nile. It's magical. Breakfast at 7:30 on the deck. At 9, guided visit of the Valley of the Kings (west bank of Luxor). You see 3-4 pharaoh tombs. It's heavy with history, magnificent in architecture.

Back to the boat at 12:30 for lunch. In the afternoon: the boat sails south (the Nile is beautiful). Around 4 p.m., visit to the Temple of Dendera (optional, 30-minute stop). You continue through the night.

Day 3 schedule

  • 7:30 a.m.: Buffet breakfast on board
  • 9:00 a.m.: Valley of the Kings tour (3-4 tombs, 3h)
  • 12:00 p.m.: Back to the boat
  • 12:30 p.m.: Lunch
  • 2:00-4:00 p.m.: Rest, swimming, deck
  • 4:00 p.m.: Optional Dendera stop (temple, 30 min)
  • 6:00 p.m.: Back to the boat, sailing
  • 7:00 p.m.: Gala dinner on board

Pace: don't overload

You have an intense 5 days. A cruise is already a rest by comparison. The visits are short. You sleep well on board. That matters for what comes next.

Day 4: Aswan and the Return

Felucca at sunset on the Nile

You arrive in Aswan in the morning (8 a.m.). Breakfast on board, then a short guided visit of Aswan: the Kitchener Island Botanical Garden (30 min by felucca, $5) and the local souk market (30 min, free time). To go deeper, check out our complete Aswan guide.

At 11, you leave the boat. Transfer to the airport. Aswan-Cairo flight at 2:00 p.m. (1h30). You arrive in Cairo at 3:30 p.m. Transfer to Cairo International Airport.

Your flight home is often in the evening (8-11 p.m. depending on your ticketing). You have 5 hours in Cairo. Rest at the hotel or wait at the airport (some drivers offer this service).

Day 4 schedule

  • 8:00 a.m.: Arrival in Aswan, breakfast
  • 9:00 a.m.: Kitchener Garden by felucca (30 min)
  • 9:45 a.m.: Aswan souk, free shopping (30 min)
  • 11:00 a.m.: Leave the boat, transfer to airport
  • 12:30 p.m.: Lunch at the airport
  • 2:00 p.m.: Aswan-Cairo flight (1h30)
  • 3:45 p.m.: Arrival in Cairo, transfer to Cairo International Airport
  • 8:00-11:00 p.m.: Your flight home (depending on schedule)

Day 5: Return Home to the US

You arrive back in the US on the morning of day 5 (or late in the night of day 5, depending on your flight). You sleep on the plane. It's done.

5 Days vs 7 Days: What Do You Lose?

A 7-day itinerary gives you more time in Luxor (the Karnak and Luxor temples instead of just the Valley of the Kings). You also explore Abu Simbel from Aswan. It's richer. But 5 days show you the most important things.

5 Days

  • Pyramids (1h30)
  • GEM (2h)
  • Valley of the Kings (3h)
  • Dendera (optional)
  • Aswan (1h)

7 Days (better)

  • Cairo 2 full days
  • Karnak + Luxor temples
  • Valley of the Kings
  • Abu Simbel (full visit)
  • Time to rest

The real difference: rest. In 5 days, it's intense. In 7 days, it's comfortable. Read our 7-day guide for comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is five days too short?

Yes and no. It's fast, but you see the three essential cities: Cairo, Luxor, Aswan. If you had 7 days, it would be perfect. With 5, it's possible but intense. Some travelers prefer it for reasons of limited vacation time.

How much sleep on the plane?

You sleep 6-8 hours on the way out, then 6-8 hours on the way back. You also rest on board the cruise (full nights). Total sleep: comparable to a normal 5-day trip. No extreme deprivation.

Is there time for shopping at Khan el-Khalili?

Not with this 5-day itinerary. If you want the market, you need 7-10 days. Otherwise, you can find souvenirs from vendors in Aswan or on the boats.

Can I skip a visit for more rest?

Yes. You can skip Dendera, for example. Or stay on board during an optional visit. Your guide won't push.

What's the best month for 5 days?

October to March. Temperatures 68-82F in Cairo, 64-79F on the Nile. June to September: 95-104F, exhausting at this pace. Read our seasonal guide.

Can I adjust the flights to arrive/leave on other days?

Yes, completely. If your flight leaves Wednesday instead of Monday, you add a day in Cairo. That makes the itinerary less intense. Tell us your dates.

Full budget

Good to know for a 5-day trip: Five days in Egypt is short but plenty to see the essentials if you manage your time well. The classic mistake? Trying to cram everything in and spending more time in transfers than in front of the monuments. Our advice: focus on a single region (Cairo + Giza, or Luxor + Aswan) instead of running all over.

If you combine Cairo and Upper Egypt, take a domestic flight Cairo-Luxor or Cairo-Aswan (count on $85-130 one way with EgyptAir). The flight lasts 1h15 versus 10 hours by train. For domestic flights, book directly on the EgyptAir site: prices there are often 20 to 30% cheaper than on the comparison sites. And one last detail that matters: keep your final day for a little shopping at Khan el-Khalili or a quiet stroll. Leaving Egypt in a mad rush is the surest way to ruin your memories.
