You have one week. Seven days. You want to see the pyramids, sail the Nile, walk through Luxor, and not come home exhausted. Not easy. We have tested fifty itineraries. Here is the one that actually works.
The day-by-day program

Day 1: Arrival in Cairo
You arrive in Cairo on your flight to Egypt, landing around 6 p.m. or 10 p.m. (depending on your schedule). VIP airport welcome the moment you step off the plane. Private transfer to your hotel in central Cairo (Zamalek or Gezira). From here on, every flight inside Egypt - Cairo-Aswan, Aswan-Luxor, Cairo-Sharm el-Sheikh - is arranged for you. You have 5-6 hours to rest. Do not go out that day. You are tired. Your body has no idea where it is. Read our guide on the Egypt visa to prepare your arrival without surprises.
Recommended hotel: 4 stars minimum. Pool. Nile view. Budget: $110-160 per night.
Day 2: Cairo in 24 hours
Morning: the Egyptian Museum (2 hours). Go there first. It is chaos after 10 a.m. Tutankhamun's mummy. The pharaonic treasures. Your guide speaks English. That is essential. To better understand Cairo and its monuments, read our complete guide.
Lunch: Koshary (pasta, rice, tomato sauce). It is the national dish. $3. It is good. Really.
Afternoon: the Pyramids of Giza. Three pyramids. The Great Pyramid, Khufu. It is colossal. You will realize that Hollywood does not exaggerate. Two hours. Then the Sphinx. Then the panorama from the desert (the three pyramids in a row).
Evening: the Citadel of Saladin. A view over Cairo. The Muhammad Ali Mosque. Very photogenic. You leave stressed by the density of Cairo, but full of history. If you are traveling with family, do not forget to read our guide on safety in Egypt.
Day 2 budget: $65 (entry tickets + guide).
Day 3: From Giza to Luxor
Very early morning: Saqqara (12 miles from Cairo). The Step Pyramid of Djoser. Less touristy than Giza. More authentic. The corridors are narrow. You will breathe in the ancient air.
Return to Cairo. Lunch. Transfer to the airport.
Cairo-Luxor flight: 2 p.m. (1-hour flight). Arrival 5 p.m. You have 3 hours of daylight. A sail up the Nile on a private boat. Sunset. A drink on the terrace of your cruise ship. It is magical. You forget the chaos of Cairo.
Day 3 budget: $160 (flight + transfers + boat).
Day 4: Nile cruise, west bank
Early morning: the Valley of the Kings. The tombs of the pharaohs. You descend 65 feet underground. The walls are painted. The colors have held for 3,300 years. Your guide tells the story of each king. Two hours. You feel dizzy from time rushing back. To discover every site in Luxor, read our complete Luxor guide.
Back to the boat. Lunch on board. Rest (nap, reading, the boat's pool).
Afternoon: the Temple of Medinet Habu (Ramesses III). More intact than Karnak. Fewer tourists than Luxor. You are alone with the walls covered in hieroglyphs.
Evening: the boat sails south (slowly). Dinner on board. A dance show if it is a motor boat. Sleep rocked by the Nile.
Day 5: Nile cruise, east bank and sailing
Morning: the Temple of Karnak. The largest temple in Egypt. Ten pharaohs built it. You get lost in the colonnades. One hundred thirty columns. The central sanctuary under the sun. It is moving. Really.
Midday: the boat keeps sailing. You love watching the Nile. The villages. The farmers plowing the way they did 5,000 years ago. Time stands still.
Afternoon: the Temple of Luxor (west bank). Less vast than Karnak, but intact. The statues of Ramesses II. The Avenue of the Sphinxes linking the two temples (1.2 miles). You picture the procession of the pharaohs.
Evening: the boat moored. Dinner. You sleep well (a real, pleasant tiredness).
Day 6: Aswan and departure
Morning: arrival in Aswan. Disembarkation. You have 4-5 hours before the return flight.
A quick visit: the Aswan Dam. Lake Nasser (the view from the dam). Aswan's traditional market (spices, fabrics, perfumes). One last real moment. No selfies. Just looking. Also read our complete Aswan guide to go deeper into your discovery.
A light lunch. Transfer to the airport.
Aswan-Cairo domestic flight we arrange for you: 4 p.m. (1h45 in the air). Transfer to Cairo International Airport.
Day 7: Return flight
You head home on your flight to Egypt's return leg (usually overnight), with a private transfer to the airport to see you off. You land back home the next morning. You are exhausted. You are happy. You will talk about Egypt for three months.

What we skip, and why
Abu Simbel. Two colossi carved into the mountain. Magnificent. But 175 miles south of Aswan. You lose two full days. For seven days, the answer is no. Wait for 10 or 12 days.
The Red Sea. Same reason. Hurghada or Sharm El-Sheikh deserve 2-3 days minimum. Not for 7 days.
The White Desert. Fascinating. White rock formations. But 185 miles from Cairo. A full day just for the road. Postpone it.
Luxor in detail. You have a day and a half in Luxor. That is enough for Karnak, Luxor temple, the Valley of the Kings. Not for the Temple of Hatshepsut, Medinet Habu, AND the necropolises. Choose.

The tricks we use ourselves
Book the Cairo-Luxor flight in advance. Not on arrival at the airport. The prices double. Two months ahead is perfect. $85 instead of $160.
Board your cruise in Luxor, disembark in Aswan. Not the other way around. You sail south. That is the Nile's current. It is faster. Less tiring.
Leave for Luxor on the evening of day 2. Not on the morning of day 3. You gain a night. You can visit Medinet Habu or the Colossi of Memnon on the morning of day 3 before boarding.
An English-speaking guide is essential. More expensive ($30 per day). But you understand. Really. The hieroglyphs are not just drawings.
Buy a single museum pass for everything. $30. Valley of the Kings, Luxor temple, Karnak. All included. Otherwise, $40 per site.
FAQ: The real questions
Do you really need two days in Cairo?
Yes. One day for the pyramids, one day for the museum. Cairo alone deserves a week. You only have one week total. The minimum is two days.
What if we want more Nile, less Cairo?
Take a 5-night cruise instead of 3. Board in Luxor on day 2. Disembark in Aswan on day 7. You lose Abu Simbel, but you gain rest. It is better.
Is jet lag a problem?
Egypt is UTC+2. The US East Coast is UTC-5, and the West Coast UTC-8, so you are looking at 7 to 10 hours of difference. You will sleep badly two nights at most. Drink water, get morning sun, and you adjust fast.
Can you do this itinerary in April (the heat)?
Yes, but 113F in Luxor. You stay in the hotel 14 hours a day. October through April is ideal (77-86F). July and August are hell for the temples.
Which boat for 7 days?
3 to 4 stars minimum. The 2-star boats are too noisy. The 5-star ones are pure luxury (dahabiya). The 4-star is the sweet spot: comfort, service, fair price.
How long per temple? Do we rush?
Karnak: 2h30. Valley of the Kings: 3h. Luxor temple: 1h30. Medinet Habu: 2h. No stress. You are not a group of rushed tourists.
Do you need travel insurance?
Yes. Repatriation, cancellation, medical. Egypt is safe (very safe, in fact), but the hospitals are not American. Budget: $55 for two people.
When are you going?
This itinerary works. We have sent it out a hundred times. People come back with stories. Not just photos. Real stories. Of temples. Of the Nile. Of Egyptians who share their mint tea.
