12-Day Egypt Itinerary: From Cairo to the Red Sea

Twelve days. That is the magic number if you cannot take 14 but you truly want the Red Sea. Pharaohs in the morning, diving in the afternoon. A reasonable budget. An honest pace. Here is the plan we recommend 90% of the time.

Why 12 days is the sweet spot

Twilight over the Nile at Luxor

That is the real question: why not 14, why not 10? Because 12 days gives you:

  • Enough time on the Nile (7 nights: Luxor -> Aswan -> Abu Simbel)
  • Enough time at the Red Sea (3 days minimum to breathe)
  • Cairo without the stress (2 full days)
  • Built-in rest days (so you do not come home exhausted)
  • Abu Simbel included (that is the psychological bonus)

It is the perfect formula for a first trip to Egypt. No rushing forward. No regrets. Just the right balance.

The day-by-day plan

Quad bike adventure in the Egyptian desert

Day 1: Arrival in Cairo

You arrive on your own flight to Egypt (often overnight), landing between 6 and 10 p.m. VIP airport welcome the moment you step off the plane. Private transfer to a 4-star hotel. From here, every flight inside Egypt is ours to arrange - we book and handle your domestic legs (Cairo-Hurghada, Cairo-Aswan, Aswan-Luxor) so you simply hop between Egypt's wonders. You have 5 to 6 hours to sleep. Do not go out that day. Your body does not know where it is. Read our guide on the Egypt e-visa before you leave.

Day 2: Cairo in full

Morning: the Egyptian Museum (90 minutes). Go first thing. It is chaos after 10 a.m. Tutankhamun's mummy. The treasures. Your guide speaks English.

Afternoon: the Pyramids of Giza (the Great Pyramid, Khufu, the Sphinx). Then the Citadel of Saladin. A view over all of Cairo. The Mosque of Muhammad Ali. It is enormous. For all the details, read our complete Cairo guide.

Evening: rest. Or the Khan el-Khalili bazaar if you still have energy (spices, fabrics, souvenirs).

Day 3: Saqqara and departure

Morning: Saqqara. The Step Pyramid of Djoser. More authentic than Giza. The corridors are narrow. You can breathe the age of it. Two hours. Back to Cairo.

Midday: lunch. Transfer to the airport.

2 p.m.: flight Cairo-Luxor (1 hour). Arrival at 3 p.m. Direct transfer to the ship. Boarding at 4 p.m. Sunset from the deck. You will sleep well tonight.

Days 4-7: Nile cruise, 7 nights

Day 4 morning: the Valley of the Kings. You go underground. The walls are painted. The colors have held for 3,300 years. It is moving. To understand the Nile cruise better, read our complete cruise guide.

Day 4 afternoon: Medinet Habu. The temple of Ramesses III. Less touristy than Karnak. More intact than most. You are almost alone with the hieroglyphs.

Day 5: Karnak in the morning (the largest temple). Luxor Temple in the afternoon. The boat sails slowly between the two (2 hours). You watch the Nile. The villages. The children playing. Time stands still. Discover the details on Luxor and its monuments.

Day 6: sailing. A rest day. You read. You sleep. You have a drink with other travelers. The boat keeps heading south. This is the real Egypt seen from the water.

Day 7: arrival in Aswan. A quick visit to the dam. The spice market. Dinner on board. Getting ready for Abu Simbel.

Day 8: Abu Simbel

Departure at 4 a.m. (very early). A 175-mile road to Abu Simbel (3 hours by car). Two colossi of Ramesses II carved into the mountain. The scale is superhuman. It is magical.

Inside visit: the temple, the halls, the underground sanctuary. Then back to Aswan (arriving at 7 p.m.). You are exhausted. But happy. A light dinner. Off to bed.

Day 9: Aswan rest

You have recovered. The Aswan market. Spices, fabrics, perfumes. A felucca (small sailboat) at sunset. It is poetic. You need this quiet half-day. It is good for you. Read our complete Aswan guide so you do not miss a thing.

Evening: disembark from the ship. Transfer to your hotel in Marsa Alam (or Hurghada, your choice).

Days 10-12: the Red Sea

Day 9 evening: arrival in Marsa Alam (45-min flight from Aswan) or Hurghada (2 hours). A 4 or 5-star hotel with a private beach. You have the evening free. A local dinner. An early night.

Day 10: acclimatizing. The beach. The pool. Cocktails. You finally read that book you packed on day 1. You do not move.

Day 11: diving or snorkeling. Coral reefs. Tropical fish. Rays. Turtles. The water is clear. You forget the surface. (If you do not dive: simple snorkeling is just as good and less tiring.)

Day 12: a free morning (beach, massage, nap). Afternoon: the swift domestic flight back to Cairo that we arrange for you, or a direct connection home (depending on your routing). You fly home tonight or tomorrow morning depending on your flight to Egypt.

Marsa Alam vs. Hurghada: the choice

Scuba diving on a Red Sea coral reef
Aspect Marsa Alam Hurghada
Distance from Aswan 160 miles (45-min flight) 360 miles (2-hour flight)
Atmosphere Quiet, village-like Urban, touristy
Coral reefs Better, less over-dived Good, popular
Nightlife Minimal Bars, restaurants, clubs
Budget $85-$130 (4*) $110-$160 (4*)
Ideal for Couples, divers, quiet Families, young crowds, action

Our take: Marsa Alam, 100%. After a tiring cruise, you need quiet. The reefs are better there. The experience is more personal. You are not in a mega-resort. You are in a little paradise.

What makes this itinerary unique

Abu Simbel included. With 7 nights of cruising, you reach Aswan with the energy for Abu Simbel (day 8). No exhausting cruise rolling toward Abu Simbel. You are rested. You enjoy the colossi.

Red Sea time. Three days is the minimum. It is enough to dive, enough to unwind. You do not come home exhausted. You come home balanced: half temples, half beach.

Marsa Alam over Hurghada. Less noise, better reefs, more authentic. The real Egypt, not the touristy version.

An English-speaking guide at every site. Crucial. You truly understand. The hieroglyphs are not just drawings. They are history.

FAQ: does 12 days really work?

Souk and bazaar with oriental lanterns

Aren't we going to be too tired?

No. The first three days, jet lag and pace wear you down. Days 4-7, you are on the boat (rest with activities). On day 8, Abu Simbel wipes you out, but it is worth it. Days 10-12 are the beach (pure rest). You come home happy, not broken.

So why not 14 days?

If you can, take 14. Two extra days means more rest, less stress, and the option of the White Desert. But 12 is honest. It is doable. 14 is a luxury.

Do you have to be certified to dive?

No. You can do a "Discovery Dive" on site ($85, 1 hour). An instructor shows you the basics, you go down 33 ft max. No certification needed. But snorkeling is just as beautiful and less tiring.

Is Abu Simbel really necessary?

Yes. Two colossi carved into the mountain. It is pharaonic architecture taken to the extreme. Otherwise you would leave telling yourself "I should have." It is 175 miles, but it is magical. Go.

Can you do this itinerary in April/May (the heat)?

Technically yes. But at 113°F in Luxor, you stay in the hotel 14 hours a day. That is not a trip, it is survival. October to April is ideal (77-86°F). June to September is impossible for an American traveler.

Which boat for 12 days?

4-star minimum. Not the 2-3 star ones (too noisy). The 4-star boats: comfort, service, fair price. The 5-star ones (dahabiya): luxury (but budget +$1,600).

Do you need travel insurance?

Yes. Repatriation, cancellation, medical. Egypt is safe, but the hospitals are not American. Budget: $55 for two people. It is a bargain. For entry requirements, check the US State Department, and the US Embassy in Cairo can help in an emergency.

Book your 12-day itinerary

This is the formula we recommend most often. Why? Because 12 days is enough to explore, not so long that it gets tense, and quick enough to be doable. And people come back saying "we saw pharaohs in the morning, dived in the afternoon, slept under the stars of the Nile."

A 5-minute WhatsApp call. You describe what you want (Abu Simbel yes/no? Marsa Alam or Hurghada?). We recommend the exact boat. The exact hotels. The English-speaking guides. No commission. No pressure. Just good advice.
